  • FLASHBACK: Milton Friedman Schools a Young David Brooks on Free College

This old video seemed quite appropriate to dust off with the resurgence of "free college" demands from the Left. Back in 1985, a young David Brooks, now a New York Times columnist, sat across from economist Milton Friedman and was schooled on why government-subsidized higher education is a bad idea. The video is courtesy of Liberty Pen. Friedman set the stage for the debate involving Brooks and the other panelists: The question I want to raise is whether those higher education expenditures are a justifiable activity of government and what there consequences are and whether they really are a desirable...

The cofounders of the popular Ben and Jerry’s ice cream company were arrested Monday afternoon as part of a sit-in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol protesting big money in politics. Jerry Greenfield, 66, and Ben Cohen, 65, were arrested with about 300 others for “unlawful demonstration activities,” according to a statement from U.S. Capitol Police Monday. All demonstrators were processed and released the same day.

HAMILTON -- An influx of Garth Brooks fans to Hamilton is temporarily pushing some Syrian refugee families out. Various local media reports say more than 200 Syrian refugees were bumped from their accommodations at downtown Hamilton hotels to make way for thousands of Brooks fans who already booked rooms. The country music legend is playing a series of concerts in the city Thursday through Sunday night. Reports say the refugees were shuttled to St. Catharines -- about 55 kilometres away -- to stay at another hotel for the duration of the shows. If you give Obama a pass when he is dishonest or breaks the rules, because he seems like a good man, or is at least better than those guys; if you argue he had to change the law himself because Congress is dysfunctional and Republicans are unreasonable; if you lambast Bush for starting a war, but give Hillary a pass for both Iraq and Libya; then you are adopting one set of rules for your tribe and another set of rules for everyone else. He and his wife have not only displayed superior integrity themselves, they have mostly attracted and hired people with high personal standards. ~snip~ He's exuded this basic care and respect for the dignity of others time and time again. Just weeks before the Iowa caucuses Donald Trump was subjected to a barrage of criticism from Republican commentators. New York Times house conservative David Brooks, who has threatened to move to Canada if Trump becomes president, called Trump a “solipsistic branding genius whose ‘policies’ have no contact with Planet Earth.” The National Review devoted a whole issue to parsing Trump’s manifold flaws and dangers to the Republican Party and the country: “Trump is a philosophically unmoored political opportunist who would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones.”

In a stunning display of moral arrogance and effete pique, David Brooks recently savaged Ted Cruz as a purveyor of “pagan brutalism” unfit to call himself a Christian, let alone lead a nation. Mr. Brooks, whose career rests on his role as liberal elites’ arbiter of conservative conduct, lost his well-coiffed cool as he descended into attack mode against the only enemies he appears to recognize: conservatives. He began with a willful distortion of a legal case in which Senator Cruz, while Texas Solicitor General, sought to uphold Texas’ interpretation of its own laws in relation to the sentencing of...

U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., claims liberals are waging a "war on whites." If so, Barack Obama must be at war with himself. That's how goofy Brooks' logic sounds. But he's not nuts. It is an old reflex, when cornered in politics, to lash back with the same charge others have leveled at you — or, put another way, to project your own flaws onto other people. What's sad about Brooks' claim is his feeble attempt to play the white victim card, plucking the strings of white nationalism, just to have his way with the nation's immigration policy.

For many years, researchers found that women were happier than men, although recent studies contend that the gap has narrowed or may even have been reversed. Political junkies might be interested to learn that conservative women are particularly blissful: about 40 percent say they are very happy. That makes them slightly happier than conservative men and significantly happier than liberal women. The unhappiest of all are liberal men; only about a fifth consider themselves very happy.

The United States is a country that has received many blessings, and once upon a time you could assume that Americans would come together to take advantage of them. But you can no... --snip-- The shale gas revolution challenges the coal industry, renders new nuclear plants uneconomic and changes the economics for the renewable energy companies, which are now much further from viability... --snip-- These problems are real, but not insurmountable. An exhaustive study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology concluded, “With 20,000 shale wells drilled in the last 10 years, the environmental record of shale-gas development is for the...

Over the past several months, Mitt Romney has been an excellent presidential candidate. He has performed superbly in debates. He has outorganized his rivals. He has relentlessly stayed on his core theme of putting Americans back to work. He has taken Rick Perry apart with a cold ruthlessness that is a wonder to behold. And throughout this period of excellence, he has done almost nothing to endear himself to Republican activists. They have spent this season of excellence searching for anyone else: Palin, Trump, Bachmann, Perry, Cain and now Christie. On Nov. 4, 2010, Romney earned the support of 23...
  • Is This Man the G.O.P.’s Best Bet for 2012? (NYT's David Brooks pretty sold on Romney at this time)

Gail Collins: David, are you reconciled to the fact that Mitt Romney is going to be the Republican presidential nominee? David Brooks: Oh, I went through that phase a few weeks ago after the debate at the Reagan library. That’s the night I noticed Romney was the best candidate in the field. Since then I’ve noticed that he has given three debate performances that are better than any Barack Obama has given in his life. (Obama’s a better speechmaker, but Romney’s a better debater.) So now I’m settling into the idea that Romney might well be president. This will be...

I’m a sap, a specific kind of sap. I’m an Obama Sap. When the president said the unemployed couldn’t wait 14 more months for help and we had to do something right away, I believed him. When administration officials called around saying that the possibility of a double-dip recession was horrifyingly real and that it would be irresponsible not to come up with a package that could pass right away, I believed them. I liked Obama’s payroll tax cut ideas and urged Republicans to play along. But of course I’m a sap. When the president unveiled the second half of...

by John HillStand With Arizona"Stimulus". "Deficits". "Taxes". "Green jobs". "Infrustructure". "Revenues". Bah!As Washington twists itself into a pretzel with convoluted plots and plans to "create jobs", as usual they miss the forest for the trees. As we have always pointed out, the most obvious solution to many of our financial woes is a simple one: deal with illegal immigration. And with jobs it is no exception. For every illegal with a job there is an American without one. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) gets it. He has a "surefire" plan to create jobs in America. And unlike Obama, he doesn't...
