The new H1N1 influenza virus bears a disturbing resemblance to the virus strain that caused the 1918 flu pandemic, with a greater ability to infect the lungs than common seasonal flu viruses, researchers reported on Monday. A grim economic forecast from the World Bank put pressure on stocks and commodities prices on Monday and increased demand for Treasurys and the dollar. Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was lower by about 97 points. The S&P 500-stock index fell 1.6% and the Nasdaq Composite Index declined 1.6%. The World Bank added to the market's unease about the economic outlook as it said that the global economy will shrink by 2.9% this year. A teenage girl survived a terrifying lightning strike after she was saved by the wire of her iPod. The Federal Opposition has seized on comments by Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner on the accuracy of the Budget's economic growth forecasts. The Budget predicts the economy will return to above average growth within three years. Treasurer Wayne Swan has repeatedly defended the forecasts as conservative against the Opposition's attack. Israel is ready "to immediately begin" peace talks with the Palestinians and Syria, PM Benjamin Netanyahu has said after returning from the US. But he insisted that any peace settlement "must find a solution to Israel's security needs". General Motors is expected Friday to announce that it is cutting up to 1,200 dealerships, a day after Chrysler delivered the same dismal news to nearly 800 of its dealers.
