(CNN) -- Kyle Nolan did his research -- his mother made sure of that. She didn't want her 18-year-old son heading to the Amazon jungle at all -- let alone, without learning everything he could about the supposed "medicine" with the bizarre name that he insisted would help him turn his young life around. "I really tried to discourage him ... I kept telling him over and over, there are no easy answers in life," Ingeborg Oswald said. But she knew she couldn't stop him. Overshadowed by his "overachieving" triplet brother and sister, Oswald said Kyle "was going through this...

Newington, Conn. (WTNH) — Bah Humbug! It’s the wrong holiday, but some say the grinch came early and took Halloween from the kids at two Newington Elementary Schools. The principals at Ruth Chaffee Elementary and Anna Reynolds Elementary say leave the costumes at home. That means 8-year-old Alyssa Montano can’t bring her pointed hat and broom to the classroom. “What did you think when you found out you can’t celebrate Halloween at school?” we asked. “It was stupid and weird because they shouldn’t take it away from other people,” said Alyssa. Her mom, Lori, says she was the one to...

Health and New York City officials were trying Friday morning to follow the trail of a young emergency room doctor who traveled about the city for three days before being hospitalized for the Ebola virus. The doctor, Craig Spencer, a member of Doctors Without Borders who had been working in Guinea, returned six days ago and reported Thursday morning coming down with a 100.3-degree fever and diarrhea. He was being treated in an isolation ward at Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital, a designated Ebola center. In the days before Spencer fell ill, he went on a 3-mile jog, went to the High...

His nine-month random killing spree in Goiania, central Brazil, ended last week when he was arrested following a massive police manhunt.

Colorado parents are being told to be on the lookout this Halloween for marijuana-laced candy, NBC News reported. The station reported that the Denver PD Facebook page features Patrick Johnson, owner of marijuana shop Urban Dispensary. In the film, Johnson urges parents to inspect any candy their children bring home after trick-or-treating on Halloween to make sure it hasn’t been tampered with..

The bidding process for the 2022 Olympics was a disaster for the International Olympic Committee. Democratic nations are no longer buying the argument that hosting the games is a wise investment. Every potential 2022 host city with a democratic government eventually pulled out of the bidding, many over economic concerns, leaving Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan, as the IOC's only two options. Academics have been saying for years that hosting the Olympics doesn't make economic sense. The costs are typically larger than expected, the infrastructure needed for a big sporting event isn't the same as the infrastructure needed for daily life,...

Anne Purfield and Michelle Dynes are epidemiologists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They spent the past several weeks responding to the Ebola epidemic in the Kenema district of Sierra Leone, and recently returned to Atlanta. One of the many difficult aspects of working around the disease is not being able to comfort people who are grieving, Purfield and Dynes explain during a visit to StoryCorps in Atlanta. (Ebola is spread through contact with bodily fluids.) "You can't touch anyone," says Purfield, 37. "You can't comfort them." "Imagine losing 10 members of your family, and no one giving...

Washington (CNN) -- Vice President Joe Biden, in a closed-door meeting with black clergy in South Carolina Tuesday, referred to himself as "the only white boy on the east side of Wilmington" as he recalled his days as a Delaware public defender, and pressed faith leaders to elect Democrats this year. He offered a candid critique of Republicans, calling the tea party "crazy," according to a detailed readout of Biden's remarks provided to CNN by a person in the room.

“Dear White People, the minimum requirement of black friends needed to not seem racist has been raised to two….Sorry, your ‘weed man’ Tyrone does not count!” Just like that, the upcoming Dear White People movie moved into highly controversial territory. The trailers (both standard and the recent red band) touch on scenarios that call out the casual racism still acted out in a supposedly “post-racial” America. Although the statements and questions raised by the lead character Samantha White may seem outlandish to some white Americans, for far too many African Americans her rants represent everyday reality. Here are some things...
