Several posters today have been criticizing Mitt Romney by simply saying “Mormon”* or something similar, as if that explains it all. I’m sure that every religion has someone who has done something foolish, but somehow, their religion is never mentioned. To help everyone understand that it is not Romney’s religion that is making him act like a buffoon, I’ve compiled a brief list of people that have helped make America great who were either raised Mormon or became Mormon. (In alphabetical order by last name.) Gutzon Borglum: Carved Mt. Rushmore John Moses Browning: Created the Colt M1911 pistol among many...

The Weary World Rejoices Christmas 2019 Disc Jockey Seth Foster was in a dark mood for someone who was in the middle of Christmas Eve 1945. Earlier, he had drawn the short straw at the staff meeting, and as a result, he’d been assigned to man the radio station until it went off the air at midnight. Radio station KOMA, (1520 on the radio dial), was nestled on the 24th floor of the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. Because of its location in the middle of the vast American Prairie, and because it had a clear-channel license to broadcast...

Took some friends who had never been to Death Valley on a tour there yesterday. Came out of the park and stayed in Pahrump, Nevada last night. Found out these friends had never been to the Hoover Dam, nor the walkway across the Pat Tillman/Mike O'Callaghan Memorial Bridge. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_O%27Callaghan%E2%80%93Pat_Tillman_Memorial_Bridge This bridge crosses the Colorado River Gorge just south of the dam. I've been there several times. You stop at what is essentially a roadside rest area and hike up a walk and cross the bridge on foot. At the Arizona /Nevada border, you are exactly above center of the Colorado...
  • Vanity: What's the deal with Maine?

I'm pleased with Senator Collins' decision to vote "Yes" on Kavanaugh, and I thought she gave a great speech, but I'm puzzled about what the political atmosphere is in Maine that would elect someone that often leaves Republicans wondering whose side she's on. Below I attach an email I sent in May to the town officials and school superintendent of Blue Hills, Maine. It concerns Memorial Day 2017. I'm still somewhat in shock at how disrespectful most of that town's citizens were to our flag. Before that experience, not knowing Maine as well as I should I guess, I would...
  • Looking for a good book about the Constitution and its amendments (vanity)

I'd like to study the Constitution and its amendments in greater depth to learn of the historical circumstances and reasoning that led to each amendment's ratification as well as some of the significant case law that has since stemmed from each one. As I've searched for a good book, it seems a lot of them are written by people who have a liberal slant and hence, whose judgment I don't trust. Can any of you recommend a well-rounded, reasonably understandable book that is written by someone with a more conservative mind? Any suggestions along that line would be appreciated. Thanks.

Could it be possible that during a major hurricane like Harvey that actually LESS people die in a city than would die on a regular day? For the most part, during a hurricane, people are inside their homes or shelters sitting still, when on other days they might be out on the freeway, playing sports, digging trenches, etc. etc. It also seems that unless there are some extreme situations, suicides and homicides would drop during such an event because people are focusing on getting to safety more than they are on their emotions or on seeking revenge. In 2012, Harris...

CEDAR CITY – The issue of Utah prairie dogs may be on their way to the U.S. Supreme Court after an appeals court refused to hear arguments this week regarding an earlier ruling that found a federal judge had erred in his 2014 decision. In 2013, attorneys for People for the Ethical Treatment of Property Owners filed a lawsuit against the federal government challenging its regulation of the Utah prairie dog and its impact on property rights. Members of PETPO include private property owners as well as entities such as Cedar City Corporation, who claim the burrow-dwelling rodents are damaging...

Five Books that illustrate why America is Exceptional I just watched -In the Heart of the Sea- based on the book of the same name, and it started me thinking about just what kind of men it took to make America the greatest nation on earth. Here is my list of five non-fiction books that I have greatly enjoyed that tell of a time when men were MEN. I have placed them in chronological order of when the event began. 1799: In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex By Nathaniel Philbrick. The Essex, stove by...

The Lessons of History--Simon and Schuster | 1968 | Will and Ariel Durant
Will and Ariel Durant spent their lives documenting the history of civilization in a ten-volume masterpiece that consumes between 25 and 30 inches on ones bookshelf. As an epilogue to that work, they wrote a book entitled "The Lessons of History." I was reading the penultimate chapter, entitled “Growth and Decay” and ran across this: "When the group or a civilization declines, it is…through the failure of its political or intellectual leaders to meet the challenges of change. The challenges may come from a dozen sources, and may by repetition or combination rise to a destructive intensity…. Taxes may mount...
  • Harry Reid's Name Removed from Southern Utah University Building

Local Newspaper, Southern Utah | August 29, 2014 | Self
This may be the most satisfying article you'll read this week. The story today is from a paper that cannot be linked. If you google southern Utah newspapers and then do a search for Reid, you'll find it. BUT! Here's my vanity-- from personal connections: A few years ago, the president of Southern Utah University, Michael Benson invited alumnus Harry Reid to campus to honor him. This is particularly strange when you consider that Benson is Ezra Taft Benson's grandson. Essentially, it was a ploy by Benson to get some dollars donated to the university by Harry and his family...

Freeper Friends, I was saddened by JimRob's imperious pronouncement yesterday, and the ensuing comments & zots. Here's why. One of this site's primary pillars is the Bill of Rights which calls for Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Right to a trial by jury. We believe in those things. We believe in them to the point of being willing to sacrifice our lives for them. And yet on this site, when a JimRob cuts people off for what they say or believe Freepers cheer him like Baghdad Bob would cheer Saddam Hussein! That's not America folks! "He owns the site!"...

    * KDKA-TV Local Coverage A local high school student will soon face charges for what he's accused of doing with a snake in school. Police say the 17-year-old stole a snake from the biology room at Allderdice High School Monday and began using it as a jump rope, CBS station KDKA-TV reports. The reptile is still alive and is being checked out by a veterinarian. Police say the student will be charged in juvenile court with theft and cruelty to animals. (© MMIX, CBS Broadcasting Inc. Networks reluctantly shuffle for Obama speech Networks are pulling their shows over to the side of the road to make room for the lights and sirens of president Barack Obama's latest primetime address. Obama will take to the air next Tuesday evening on four broadcast networks and bump the most popular series on television, Fox's "American Idol." Fulfilling their scheduling civic duty is starting to seem increasingly cumbersome to broadcasters, however. Between a struggling economy and ratings sagging in midseason, every interruption costs networks advertising dollars and momentum. "At a time when we're struggling not only financially but to build...

We kick off our newest feature in Utah -- where else? -- with a look at Beehive State Gov. Jon Huntsman. On paper, Huntsman doesn't seem like anyone worth keeping an eye on. The son of a billionaire businessman and philanthropist, Huntsman served in several positions within the Administrations of George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush before running successfully for governor in ruby-red Utah in 2004 and cruising to reelection last month with 70 percent of the vote.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Magic Johnson says he's outraged that a pair of Minneapolis talk radio hosts accused him of faking AIDS. KTLK's Chris Baker and Langdon Perry made the remarks during Baker's conservative talk show on Wednesday. The context for the remarks wasn't clear. According to a partial transcript and audio clip posted on a media watchdog site, mediamatters.org, the remarks came after a caller complained about demands on workers. Perry responded by asking about treatable diseases that a person can live with for a long time "if you just get some basic drugs." Baker responded, "Like Magic Johnson?" Perry...

August 14th, 2008 @ 11:24pm By Sarah Dallof There were some tense moments inside a local sporting goods store when three boys playing around climbed inside a gun vault and their friend shut the door. The vault had a fail-safe, a common combination that should open every lock in the store, but it didn't work. Firefighters say the safe was 4 feet high, 4 feet wide and 2 feet deep, good for holding up to 45 guns, but not so good for three children. Fourteen-year-old Myan was all smiles as he left Dick's Sporting Goods, but earlier this evening he...
