CBS News) THE PENTAGON - The Defense Department was considering Monday night ordering the mandatory departure of all American military personnel and their families from the areas of Japan threatened by radiation, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports

In an operation known as a “junk shot,” BP engineers poured pieces of rubber, golf balls and other materials into the crippled blowout preventer, trying to clog the device that sits atop the wellhead.

But the technician working on the effort said later Friday that despite the injections at various pressure levels, engineers had been able to keep less than 10 percent of the injection fluids inside the stack of pipes above the well. He said that was barely an improvement on Wednesday’s results when the operation began and was suspended after 11 hours. BP resumed the pumping effort Thursday evening for about 10 more hours.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- United State Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt said a team of scientists and government officials reviewing video footage of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico put the flow rate of about 12,000 to 25,000 barrels a day.

WASHINGTON — A live video feed that shows the oil gushing from the blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico is now available online. The video shows a large plume of oil and gas still spewing next to the tube that's carrying some of it to the surface. By Jim Polson May 20 (Bloomberg) -- BP Plc is capturing 5,000 barrels of oil a day from its leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico. The company couldn’t say whether that was all of the crude from the well, which has been estimated to be leaking at that rate.
