You can find many timelines that follow allegations of Russia tampering in the U.S. election and alleged involvement of Trump officials. But I couldn’t find any comprehensive timelines cross-referencing Obama-era surveillance of whistleblowers, journalists and other U.S. citizens with Russia surveillance allegations. So I built one. Please note: temporal proximity of events doesn’t necessarily imply a connection. January 21, 2009: President Obama takes office; pledges unprecedented transparency.

I’ve spoken to a small group of reliable, formerly high-placed intelligence officials who have dropped a few interesting tidbits on me of late. Here’s my understanding, based on the discussions: It’s not true that wiretaps and/or electronic surveillance of U.S. citizens can “only” be done with a FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) court order. Besides the FISA court, “wiretapping” or electronic surveillance can also be done under Title III authority. The government used this authority, for example, in the Justice Department’s secret Fast and Furious “gunwalking” case. Additionally, U.S. Presidents have the power to issue secret presidential directives that can...

There are a lot of reasons to think the Obama administration’s decision to decline an easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline yesterday was a travesty, among the most prominent the fact that it was President Obama who made this decision. It’s worth keeping in mind that the pipeline’s current crossing of Lake Oahe was already approved and permitted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. That the Corps has now declined an easement for a route they’d already permitted, saying they’d like to explore other routes, tells us this decision was made in the White House, and that it was...

Megyn Kelly alleges that President-elect Donald Trump called her up "screaming" just days before the presidential debate she moderated in August 2015. Kelly, the host of Fox News' "The Kelly File," told Dr. Phil that this was the "first time" she had ever told this story. The Fox News host claimed that Trump was upset that she had interviewed Harry Hunt, the author of "Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump." Hunt discussed claims that Trump's first wife, Ivana Trump, had accused Donald of raping her. The accusation was in a sworn deposition during their divorce in the...

For me, it will be difficult to view USA Today from now on as the newspaper it once was. After all, when an editorial board admits this sort of bias, it’s reasonable to suspect they’ll see fit to deviate from other normal editorial policies, slanting their news coverage in subtle if not overt ways.

Ted Cruz is threatening to make one of the biggest gambles of the 2016 season: diving into Florida to knock off Marco Rubio. Cruz has little chance of winning the March 15 Florida primary, but he’s showing signs he might compete by opening field offices and sending surrogates to stump in the state while his super PAC prepares to strafe Marco Rubio with a seven-figure ad buy. The aim: pull enough voters away from Rubio to ensure Donald Trump wins the state’s 99 delegates and deny the Florida senator any pick-up opportunity elsewhere by forcing him to defend his turf....
  • Poll: Trump Blowout in Massachusetts

Donald Trump's lead in a new Suffolk University poll among likely Republican primary voters in Massachusetts days voters head to the polls on Super Tuesday is, in a word, huge. Trump leads the field with 43 percent, more than 20 points ahead of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who finished in second with 20 percent. Ohio Gov. John Kasich finished close behind with 17 percent, followed by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz with 9 percent and Ben Carson with 4 percent. Just 7 percent of voters remain undecided among those candidates

We’re in a funny moment. Those who do politics for a living, some of them quite brilliant, are struggling to comprehend the central fact Republican primary race, while regular people have already absorbed what has happened and is happening. Journalists and politicos have been sharing schemes for how Marco parlays a victory out of winning nowhere, or Ted roars back, or Kasich has to finish second in Ohio. But in my experience any nonpolitical person on the street, when asked who will win, not only knows but gets a look as if you’re teasing him. Trump.

WASHINGTON--For a man in the middle of the political storm of the moment, Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl is pretty low key. In his office in the Hart Senate building this week, with phones ringing and staff scampering around an office under construction, the key player in the Senate's immigration reform legislation wants to help me set up my tape recorder. As it teeters precariously on the arm of the couch, his eyes flick back and forth. "You want to put that right down here?" he asks, indicating the middle of the coffee table--a far more sensible choice. As the 2008...

In an age when colleges live and die by their rankings, a new focus for campus assessment is emerging: gay-friendliness. The Advocate, the national newsmagazine for gays and lesbians, published a 389-page book this month listing the 100 schools that it says offer the best discrimination protection, most friendly climate, and most extensive campus services for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students. Sixteen of the schools are in New England, including six in Massachusetts. MIT, for one, made the top 100. The school is cited for having one of the nation's oldest gay and lesbian student groups and for early...

August 23, 2006 Clemson University (S.C.) freshmen must participate in discussion of a controversial book but won't be punished if personal feelings keep them from reading it, Clemson President Barker said in a campus letter. "If any of our students feel so strongly about the book that they cannot complete it, that is their decision, and we should not respond in a punitive way," Barker said in a letter to faculty and staff Tuesday. "However, we should expect them to complete the assignment, which includes attending the discussion and submitting an essay to their Electronic Portfolio online explaining their views...
