  • 19-hour TFR to shut down Las Vegas

Las Vegas will essentially be closed to general aviation pilots trying to fly into the area for parts of July 8 and 9. A 19-hour presidential temporary flight restriction will shut down all three major GA airports in the area: McCarran International, Henderson Executive, and North Las Vegas. AOPA President Craig Fuller has reached out to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano once again to reiterate the negative economic impact these TFRs have on the local economies and the need for GA to be represented in the TFR planning process. Reminding Napolitano of the negative economic and public...
  • Arizona becoming the first state to secede from the Union ( Barf Alert)

Two years before Arizona celebrates its centennial as the last of the 48 contiguous United States, I'm beginning to wonder if they can truly make it until 2012. If Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signs into law the harsh anti-immigration law recently passed by state lawmakers -- making racial profiling the law of the law in a manner in which the term "police state" is not hyberbole -- then the desert paradise will all but have seceded from the Union. Not legally -- not yet, anyway, although in a few years who knows? -- but morally. Here's the proposed law: The bill,...

Authorities in Trenton say the girl was taken to a party at which she was gang-raped for money. TRENTON - It started with a seemingly innocent party invitation. A 15-year-old girl and her 7-year-old stepsister were headed to an apartment down the street from their home near the Statehouse, where they had been hanging around outside on Sunday afternoon. For the younger girl, police say, the visit quickly descended into a horrifying ordeal as she was gang-raped by as many as seven men while her sister not only watched, but got paid by the participants. The girls' parents thought they...
  • Spying on L. Merion students sparks probes by FBI, Montco detectives

A federal invasion-of-privacy lawsuit may be the least of the Lower Merion School District's problems. Allegations that the affluent suburban district used webcams on school-issued laptops to "spy" on students in their homes has now caught the attention of Montgomery County detectives and the FBI, both of which are looking into whether the practice violated wiretap and privacy laws. The district is also fighting off a coast-to-coast onslaught of negative publicity that appeared to be growing more intense yesterday. Some creeped-out students have placed tape over the cameras, and parody T-shirts are already being sold on the Internet – including...

Air tour operators and flight training schools say a no-fly zone established over much of Windward Oahu during President Barack Obama's upcoming visit will hurt their businesses. Starting tomorrow through Jan. 4, several general aviation activities, such as air tours, hang gliding and flight training, are prohibited within a 10-mile radius of where Obama is staying. The no-fly zone stretches from Kaaawa almost to Makapuu Point on the windward side and over much of the Honolulu side of the Koolau mountains. "This is the peak of the tourist season," said Rob Moore, president of the General Aviation Council of Hawaii....

The ongoing jockeying among cars, bicycles and pedestrians in Philadelphia took a tragic twist in recent weeks with the deaths of two pedestrians who were struck by bicycles. Now, city council may look at requiring the registration of bikes so cyclists who cause accidents can be tracked down. City councilman Frank DiCicco says countless pedestrians are struck by bicyclists and rarely does the cyclist stop: "When someone's struck by a bicycle, all you know is its someone on a bike, and the bicyclist takes off." His colleague Jim Kenney says the deaths of the two pedestrians highlight the need to...

Most bicyclists prefer skintight attire, but a group tomorrow is going to take it one step further. It's planning a mass ride in the nude. Organizers said they expected at least 200 people in various states of undress to bike a four-mile course through Center City. The route is being kept under wraps. It won't be divulged until Saturday night. And then, only cyclists who sign up at phillynakedbikeride.org will get the location of the gathering point by e-mail. "It's kind of an experiment," said Clifford Greer, 30, the lead organizer. "It's really a totally amazing thing, and unlike any...

Henry Louis Gates Jr. she was not. Dressed in white fishnet stockings - and nothing else - a Delaware County woman who police say was drunk and who repeatedly threw herself at the front door of a locked Ridley Park home brought them to the scene last week when neighbors believed she was trying to burgle the residence. As it turned out, the woman, Sherry McNeal, 47, of Chester, was a guest at the house of John Litwin, 48, of Pomeroy Street near Kenny. Litwin also was drunk, police said, when he finally came to the door, though he was...

The police officer who founded Domelights.com, the Web site that prompted an association of black police officers to sue the Philadelphia Police Department this week, said in a statement posted Thursday night on his site that he never encouraged racist comments. The officer, who uses the screen name "McQ," also wrote that he was not responsible for what registered users post on the site, and said he had never been asked to remove posts or comments. The site, which began in 2000 and is not affiliated with the Police Department, is a popular forum where officers discuss crime, police news,...

Armed with handguns and posing as police, a group of men yesterday invaded three homes in Prince George's County, binding the occupants and demanding money and in one case a flat-screen TV, police said. The intruders first hit a red brick apartment building in District Heights, cuffing a woman with plastic bindings and asking her where she kept her money, according to the woman's account. Next they moved to a two-story home in Glenarden, disregarding the alarm company security sign in the front yard as they broke in, police said.

After they got into a dispute over a beer-pong game, Joseph Jiminez, 24, and Scott Riley, 25, met in a Bridgeport alleyway and Riley made a dare, investigators said. "Shoot me, shoot me," Riley said to Jiminez and a companion. "You guys ain't got the ... " Jiminez accepted the challenge, police said, and today he is being held without bail at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility on murder and related charges pending a hearing a week from now. The Montgomery County District Attorneys' office gave the following account: Late Friday night, Jiminez and Riley were inside a house in...
  • Travel writers send American tourists to London's rundown Deptford(New York Times )

Forget Stonehenge and York Minster - South East London is Britain's latest must-see tourist hotspot. The New York Times dubbed the deprived districts of Deptford and New Cross as "London's Wild West" and urged Americans to visit the area's gritty attractions. Readers of the respected newspaper are told that Deptford has "that most heady of urban ingredients: an edge". That edge includes being the tenth most violent place in the country, according to the latest Home Office crime figures. There were 8,376 violent offences committed against people in Deptford's borough Lewisham. The figure includes four murders, 1,674 robberies, 135 gun...

At 22 years old, St. Louis Blues rookie sensation T.J. Oshie doesn't meet the age requirements to be mayor of St. Louis. But that didn't stop a fan blog called Vote 4 Oshie from organizing a hastily crafted campaign to have fans write in Oshie's name for last Tuesday's mayoral elections around Missouri. Alas, it would appear that he fell a few votes short. But the campaign was so inspirational that a Blues fan actually wrote Oshie's name on a ballot in last Tuesday's O'Fallon, Mo. mayoral election and then proudly photographed it before having the image posted on Vote...

Waukegan police said a clerk at a guns-and-ammunition store appears to have shot a man who was trying to rob the establishment this afternoon. Officers responded at about 1:45 p.m. to Mike Schrank's Smoke 'N Gun, 2010 Washington St., to a call of a person shot, according to a police news release. There they found a man who had been shot twice in the chest and once in the leg, and a shop clerk who had a gun trained on him, the statement said. Witnesses told investigators that the injured man went behind the counter and argued with the clerk....
