Seven people, mostly women, were shot early Saturday near the entrance to Theater on the Lake, 2401 North Lake Shore Drive, according to police and a CPD source. No one is in custody. It is the second mass-shooting incident in the area since June 6th. The shooting came shortly after police supervisors twice summoned officers to disperse large crowds in nearby Lincoln Park. Police said a group of people was walking toward the lakefront at 3:20 a.m. when they encountered another group that was leaving. A verbal altercation broke out and escalated, causing people from both groups to pull out...

Video emerged today of an armed man pulling his weapon to ward off two apparent attackers near the Magnificent Mile, just two days after widespread mob action prompted police to arrest 21 people in the area. The video, filmed from inside McDonald's at 10 East Chicago, shows two males attacking a middle-aged man who appears to be a security guard. The man is slammed against the restaurant’s outside wall by the pair who punch and grapple the older man as he works to free himself.

My brother, Michael, passed yesterday after an 8 year long battle with cancer. His wife was at his side when it happened. He was comfortable and in no pain. I'd like to thank all of you who sent your prayers, thoughts, and good wishes to his family 2 weeks ago. Michael was a fine man. He leaves behind two children who are both in their teens. This is a devastating loss for them. He was a loving father and devoted husband. I've honestly never seen two people more in love with each other. I think the happiest I ever saw...

I've never done this, so please forgive me if I've gotten it wrong. My brother, Michael, was hospitalized last week due to the recurrence of thyroid cancer. He was originally diagnosed and successfully treated about 9 years ago. Unfortunately the cancer has returned. It's inoperable due to being wrapped around his carotid artery. Today he had a serious episode of arterial bleeding and went into cardiac arrest. Had this occurred at home it would have been fatal. He's under sedation and in no pain. But what happens next is in the hands of the Almighty. My brother is a fine...

I'm looking for information from Freepers residing in the Philippenes. My parents are retired and are considering a move there. The Pastor at their church is Filipino and recommended it. I mentioned that some folks on the forum live there so they asked me if I could dig around here for some information. Dad is looking for info on the process, what are safe and friendly parts of the country to look at, that sort of thing. Dad is a retired IT guy, mom was a housewife but has a teaching background. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in...

A couple of weeks ago someone on the weekly prep thread thought a post on generators might be useful to some. Now I have recently completed the “biggest” prep project of mine to date. Considering the recent catastrophic power grid failure in India I thought it would be a good time to share what I’ve done to deal with an extended power outage at the Compound of Clan Lurker. Project Overview: I wanted to be able to power my home during an extended grid failure without having to run a bunch of extension cords through open windows, etc. My criteria...

The Chicago Public School system has removed 12 principals and assistant principals for allegedly falsifying free and reduced lunch forms for their own children, according to a report from the Office of the Inspector General and CPS. None of the 12 assistant principals or principals have been charged with a crime, but have been removed from their posts pending due process hearings. Their names have been withheld during the hearing process. The program costs about $100 million per year and is meant to provide nutritious meals to needy children. “The investigation by the OIG has uncovered continuing fraud in this...

ORLANDO, Fla. (WLS) - Prosecutors asked a judge Friday to revoke the bond of the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Prosecutors said in a motion that 28-year-old George Zimmerman and his family misled them about his finances when testifying during a bail hearing that allowed him to be released from jail on a $150,000 bond. Prosecutor Bernie De la Rionda asked for the revocation during a hearing to help determine if prosecutors and the defense can stop the public release of certain documents in the case. During the bond hearing in April, Zimmerman's relatives testified they...

The American Institute of Architects’ midyear look at nonresidential construction concludes that new development spending likely to fall more than 20% this year -- significantly more than forecasters predicted six months ago -- with hotel and office construction down by more than 43% and 29%, respectively. Even with a modest U.S. economic recovery under way, overall nonresidential spending is expected to drop 20.3% for 2010 - nearly 30% for private commercial development -- before edging up an inflation-adjusted 3.1% in 2011, according to the AIA’s semi-annual Consensus Construction Forecast, a survey of the nation’s leading construction forecasters. Manufacturing facilities will...

NEW YORK CITY-Dovetailing with reports issued earlier this year by the New York Building Congress, the association said Tuesday that 2009 residential building permits plummeted 82% from the year prior, the lowest level in a decade. Although the dropoff is due partly to a 2008 spike in permit applications as developers sought to start projects prior to a tax break’s expiration, it’s not the only reason, says Building Congress president Richard T. Anderson. Noting that "new residential construction has screeched to a virtual stop," Anderson says in a report that the sunset of the J-51 tax abatement program across most...
