We are just at the edge of DSL service. The internet service is at times very slow and video streaming can be a real pain. There are no plans for upgrading to higher speeds for several years. We are considering either Time Warner cable for internet service only. It looks like the fee is about $35.00 per month for the standard package or about $65.00 a month for an even faster service. We don't intend to purchase any TV packages just internet. Any suggestions from fellow FREEPERS will be appreciated. We would prefer not to use Dish but would consider...

Some medical advice from Freepers is sorely needed. About two weeks ago I twisted my lower back and the result sciatica. I have been taking 3 200mg of Advil and 2 300 mg Tylenol every six hours plus alternating between an ice pack (wrapped in a towel) and a hot water bottle. I have also been doing some exercises several times a day as recommended by my physical therapist. So here it is Saturday evening and I am in a lot of pain. What is so discouraging was today at about 2 pm for a couple of hours, I was...
  • Debit/Credit card question

I am getting ready to write a letter to the Attorney General of Maine asking his office to investigate how companies put hold on debit/credit cards. During a recent trip we used a prepaid AAA debit card; we purchased gasoline for $29.00 and paid at the pump. After our purchase we checked our statement and the company put a hold of $75.00 on the card. We have a receipt for $29.00. A couple of days later the $75.00 dropped off and our card was debited for the actual amount of the purchase. I understand a company can put a hold...

My son discovered Watch32 on the internet and we have been watching a good number of movies the past few days. Monsters University is one of the movies on that site. It was in the theaters until just a few days ago. Are we violating any copyright laws by watching these movies. Are we going to be charged for the movies.

Here is an article from the Bangor Daily News. Eliot Cutler second place in the governor's race thinks he could have won if not for early voting by Democrats. Cutler, a Rat turned "independent" started to close the gap between himself and LaPage. A week before the election, LaPage had a solid lead with about 40% of the vote, Cutler, "independent" and Mitchell, Democrat each had about 26% of the vote. The word went out that Mitchell was not going to win so all good Democrats should vote for Cutler. They did and there was a shift from Mitchell to...

Paul LaPage elected Republican Governor of Maine. The first time since 1962 (we think) the Republicans hold the governorship and both houses of the state legislature. No Republican incumbent for the state house lost! Sixteen Demorat incumbents lost. The Republicans also won six open seats. Net gain +22. Maine is moving to RED!

  • History book for middle schoolers

My 12 year old son is developing an interest in history. About five years ago, I read a book review of an American History book written by a woman that was considered unbiased, that is it did not blame America for everything that has gone wrong in the world. The book was written for younger students. There may have been more than one book written. What I recall from the review was that it was well written and kept the kids interested (no mean feat for my 12 year). Does anyone know about the book or who the author is.
  • (Vanity) Attempt to weaken term limits in Maine fails

An attempt by the political class in Maine to extend term limits from four terms to six has been defeated. The Bangor Daily News is reporting 67% againt the measure and only 30% in favor. This is one of the bluest of blue states with the Democrats holding a large majority in the state house of representatives.
