St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay is looking to raise the minimum wage in the city to $15 an hour by 2020. Missouri’s current minimum wage is $7.65 per hour. Slay’s proposal, expected to be formalized in a bill before the Board of Aldermen by next week, would include exemptions for small businesses that employ 15 people or fewer and those that do less than $500,000 in annual sales, Alderman Shane Cohn, who’s expected to sponsor the legislation, said in an email. “There’s obviously a lot of discussion that will be taking place in the coming weeks, and (I) look forward...

BY KEVIN McDERMOTT > kmcdermott@post-dispatch.com > 314-952-9667 stltoday.com | Posted: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 2:21 pm Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., is confirming that she will not attend the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., in September. A statement from her office says it's standard practice for her when she's running for election. But one Republican official is calling it "a pathetic attempt to distance herself from Barack Obama." In an emailed statement attributed to an unnamed aide, McCaskill's office said she is declining to attend because she's is running for office herself.

I don't know how to post the actual image or if doing so is even allowed or legal. Please take a moment and go to the link and read the 7 panel strip there. In panel 4 the cartoonist, Chris Muir has coined a new word that perfectly describes what the media does to itself nearly every time they get into a factual skirmish with Gov. Palin: Beclowned. I wrote him an eMail a few minutes ago congratulating him for nailing it. Have a great day, despite the government...

Nov. 3, 2010 –There are a number of questions surrounding the votes in Missouri’s 3rd district race. The people deserve to have these questions investigated and answered so they are assured our election process is fair and their votes are counted. The three glaring factors which stand out involve the Secretary of State’s office, the sole decision of a newly appointed Democratic chair at the City Elections Board, and an unprecedented number of...

The author-publisher of "The Tea Party Coloring Book for Kids" says he has received death threats over its publication. Wayne Bell, publisher of Clayton, Mo.-based Really Big Coloring Books, said in an interview with CBS that his $3.59 coloring book is not political. But some critics think the book was designed for politically conservative adults, and not for children.

The Democratic National Committee plans to hold its summer meeting in St. Louis. The meeting will take place Aug. 19-21 at the Union Station Marriott, and DNC members from across the country will be in attendance, said Derrick Plummer, the DNC’s regional secretary. The DNC, which has 400 members, has a general membership meeting twice a year, once in winter and once in summer. Local officials hope DNC members get a good impression of the city when they visit because St. Louis is bidding to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Hosting the national convention could mean millions in economic...

A group that thinks an ad celebrating Tim Tebow's life is bad news for women might be a little out of touch with what women really want. That helps explain why the National Organization for Women and other feminist groups have vehemently opposed abstinence education while failing to notice that a culture of casual sex hasn't been so liberating for women. Just ask the 29-year-old Briton living in America whose anonymous account appeared in her country's left-wing Guardian newspaper. "(M)y sexual liberation was perversely trapping me in destructive relationships, while intimacy had become something elusive, insubstantial, disappointing, surreal," she writes....

Matt, who has Down syndrome, is a freshman at Benton High School in St. Joseph, Mo. Despite his disability he suits up for every football game and cheers on his teammates from the sidelines. Last Monday night the Benton Cardinals football team was losing its game against the...

TUBACHRISTMAS was conceived in 1974 as a tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Through the legendary William J. Bell we reflect on our heritage and honor all great artists/teachers whose legacy has given us high performance standards, well structured pedagogy, professional integrity, personal values and a camaraderie envied by all other instrumentalists. The first TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted by the late Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Center Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died...

Recently, the Archdiocese of New York held its famous Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, with both Senators John McCain and Barack Obama as guests. I watched the coverage today -- the story is all over the news, along with images of Obama and Edward Cardinal Egan sharing a laugh. Something about that bothered me. No, it's not what you think. I'm not upset that a Democrat and the cardinal were enjoying a conversation. This is not a partisan issue, and I would have had the same negative reaction if it were Rudy Giuliani or Susan Collins instead of Obama....
