BOSTON — A nearly two-decade legal fight by a convicted murderer in Massachusetts to get taxpayer-funded sex-reassignment surgery ended in failure Monday when the U.S. Supreme Court rejected her final appeal. The justices did not comment in letting stand a lower-court ruling denying the surgery to Michelle Kosilek. "This is a terrible and inhumane result for Michelle," said Jennifer Levi, director of the Transgender Rights Project for Boston-based Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders. The state Department of Correction, which has fought the surgery, did not immediately respond to a request to comment. State prison officials, who say the surgery...

The University of Michigan said late Wednesday that it will show the film "American Sniper" as originally scheduled after a protest by students and staff caused the screening to be scrapped. University Vice President for Student Life E. Royster Harper called the decision to cancel the Friday night showing a "mistake" in a statement. "The initial decision to cancel the movie was not consistent with the high value the University of Michigan places on freedom of expression and our respect for the right of students to make their own choices in such matters," Harper said. The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate needs to make a couple of additions — namely, a comedy wing and a laugh track. Lest we forget, for decades Ted Kennedy was the Norm Crosby of the Democrat party, mangling not just Oldsmobiles and blondes, but also the English language. But political correctness now demands that all avert their eyes from the train wreck, er, automobile accident, that was Teddy’s life. Presumably the Fox News Channel anchor’s tongue was firmly in cheek as he mentioned Ted’s ability to “inspire new generations.” But Scott Pelley wasn’t kidding last week when...

BOSTON, MA – One of the more public divorces in Boston media history turns out to have been just a trial separation. Howie Carr and WRKO (680AM and 93.7FM HD-2) announced today that the legendary author, columnist and talk show host will return to the Entercom station on Monday, March 16. Carr will assume the weekday afternoon time slot he occupied on WRKO for decades, 3-7 p.m. Entercom Boston’s VP / Market Manager Phil Zachary said he believes Carr’s return was meant to be. “As the holidays passed, it became obvious to me that WRKO and Howie belong together,” he...

Rush Limbaugh, who’s been a fixture on WLS AM 890 for more than 25 years, is about to get the bum’s rush from the Cumulus Media news/talk station, sources said Wednesday. If all goes as planned, Limbaugh’s syndicated talk show, which airs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, will be dropped by the end of March, according to insiders at WLS. A Cumulus Media spokeswoman declined immediate comment. But a source familiar with the decision said it was based on the show’s diminished ratings and failure to generate advertising revenue for the station, adding: “It’s impossible to...

As part of a bankruptcy deal, RadioShack Corp. will be shutting down their entire chain of 7,000 tech stores, half of which will be reportedly sold to Sprint. According to the report, RadioShack locations that are sold to Sprint would operate under the wireless carrier’s name, meaning RadioShack would cease to exist as a stand-alone retailer. "The district court erred and that the care provided to Kosilek by the DOC does not violate the Eighth Amendment. We therefore reverse the district court's grant of injunctive relief, and we remand with instructions to dismiss the case," the court ruled. With their campaign to save Christmas snowballing, traditionalists are expected to pack Marshfield High School’s auditorium tonight in hopes of persuading the School Committee to reverse its decision to rename the late December vacation as the “holiday break.” “There are signs all over town: ‘There’s Still a Christmas,’ ‘Bring Back Christmas.’ There’s some little kids in town picking up on this and wondering if Santa is going to come to their house,” said attorney Dennis Scollins, the Marshfield School Committee’s longest-serving member and one of two who stood up for St. Nick when the board voted 3-2 on Sept. 9...

A proposal that would have made the town the first in the nation to ban all tobacco sales has gone up in smoke. Westminster’s board of health voted 2-1 to drop the proposal at its regular meeting on Wednesday, a week after rowdy opposition led board members to end a public hearing early. The board had initially said the ban would help keep a variety of tobacco products from young people, but businesses strongly opposed it.

Tom Magliozzi, one of public radio's most popular personalities, died on Monday of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 77 years old. Tom and his brother, Ray, became famous as "Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers" on the weekly NPR show Car Talk. They bantered, told jokes, laughed and sometimes even gave pretty good advice to listeners who called in with their car troubles. If there was one thing that defined Tom Magliozzi, it was his laugh. Let's link the months of July & August for Howie in this thread. It should be interesting to see what happens in the next couple months as Howie's WRKO contract ends around Sept or so; he's planning to syndicate with a company called Global Media and maybe WRKO will opt to carry him but who knows (would think his affiliate stations currently would stay with him and maybe expand).
