  • For politics' sake - Artists can't fathom why John Kerry lost

I have never considered singers or actors to be artists. I won't call them an artist and have always believed that they were just entertainers. I'm sorry, but when I think of a good artist, I think of Terry Redlin.

  • Who Were the Greatest Military Commanders (Of All Time) ?

Most are saying Patton, but I have some problems with Patton. He was bad about outrunning his supply lines and he is probably also to blame for those troops in Belgium being ill equiped for winter fighting. They had no winter clothes because Patton assumed he could win the war by Christmas and he didn't think it was necessary for them to have winter clothes. He was a prima donna and I believe that the 3rd army was successful because of those men fighting in it and not because of Patton. He was aggressive, I give him that. But he also didn't play it smart and it ended up costing a lot of lives. If he wouldn't have outrun his supply lines and made sure the men were properly equipped, we would have still won, but without as much lives lost. That's all hindsight and it's debated that being so aggressive kept the Germans on the defensive. However, I also believe that Patton did a lot of things strictly to make Patton look good. I think his ego got in the way of clear thinking too many times.

The original thread asked for commanders and not necessarily generals. If so, I liked Norman Cota and Dick Winters. After reading Band of Brothers, Winters is the type of commander I would have wanted to serve under.

She claimed that democrats were still in line to vote. Only problem is that there aren't 300,000+ democrats still in line to make a difference. Those Florida Republicans get an "Atta Boy" for showing up at the polls!

When it comes to Gene Taylor, it's just too hard to beat those incumbents. I'll keep voting for whoever the Republicans keep putting up against him and getting upset every 2 years.

I'm in Hattiesburg and will be watching the Taylor/Lott race and also the bond issue in Hattiesburg, the bond issue where USM wants Hattiesburg to add a tax on eating and hotels to do a stadium expansion.

THAT'S why these other countries don't want Bush re-elected. They don't want those nutcases coming to their country. I think they should take them. The foreign aid we gave them shouldn't come without a cost.

BS in Civil Engineering from Ole Miss here. Glad to see we are on the list, but wish we were a little higher up. And no, Mississippi State shouldn't be higher since they are more apolitical. Yes, Mississippi State has graduated some farmers but they haven't really contributed to the conservative cause like Ole Miss has. Ole Miss has sent many Republicans into office.

Ha! A actual thread that I can post something useful! I vote in Gene Taylor's district and I have never voted for him. Why? He claims to be a conservative and goes with the conservative vote when the vote isn't really on the line. But on a close vote, expect him to go with the democRATS.

The reason he portrays himself as a conservative is because this district is VERY conservative. But if he REALLY cared about conservative issues, he would switch to the Republican Party to give us better numbers. He is trying to appeal to both sides and it is apparently working, by claiming to be a conservative democRAT.

There is no need to vote for him just because he appears to be a conservative democRAT. Why vote for a conservative democRAT when there are always have been qualified conservative Republicans running against him. In fairness to him, he is in reality more conservative than the average democRAT, but not as conservative as the average Republican. The problem is that in this district, an incumbent is pretty much there for life unless he really screws up and makes the voters mad. So far he hasn't done that as long as he tries to appear conservative.

In Mississippi, there is no need for him to support Bush because Mississippi is a safe state for Bush. And he is remaining out of the picture so as to not tick off his fellow democRATS. But, like I said, if he was really conservative and cared about conservative ideas, he would back Bush to help out in other areas of the country and switch parties. We need a bigger majority in the House.

Speaking of a bigger majority in the House, we REALLY need a bigger majority in the Senate. Sorry for running a rabbit a while here, but the Senate is the important side when considering who will be approving Bush's Supreme Court Nominees. I believe Bush will win and will have the opportunity to appoint a few justices. But having a clear majority in the Senate will help that go a lot smoother. Sorry about running that rabbit.....I'm through now.

I'm in Mississippi and work with some that are in the reserves or guard who have served. I really don't know the true story in this instance, but without going into any details, I wonder about this story. This is based on some of those I know that have served over there.

Well, to go into a little detail, some are in the reserve or guard to get that extra check, or easy money as they have explained. Those that I know never expected to go to Iraq when they first signed up and aren't what you would picture when you picture a soldier. There is one guy in my office who had to go and he is probably our worst employee and will do anything to get out of work.

Every guard unit and reserve unit is different and most are filled with honorable soldiers. But there are some like I know of personally that would make the same excuse. Of course, like I said, I have no real information about this instance and it could be totally different. Just my perspective from working with some from certain units.

Heck, I probably shouldn't even be posting this because it may sound downgrading to those that are honorable. The only reason I'm doing so is because a few bad soldiers can make the military as a whole look bad. I'm just saying that I have good suspician that it's very likely that it's those individual soldiers that are at fault. And those types of soldiers (if that's what they are) aren't representatives of those true honorable soldiers that defend this country.

I'm glad you brought that up.

After reading these posts, it seems that the general consensus is that eminent domain is wrong. Eminent Domain isn't wrong...the ABUSE of eminent domain is wrong. Eminent domain is the reason this country is strong and not a third world country. Next time you use a highway for any purpose, thank eminent domain. The next time you go shopping and see all of those products on the shelf, thank eminent domain. Highways wouldn't be built if it depended on land owners to voluntarily give up their land. And the majority of procucts you find on the shelves of stores come from trucks, which use those highways. Having ready transportation is what makes this country so strong economically and militarily. One of the reasons the interstate system was originally built was to quickly move troops and equipment in case of war.

The case that started this thread is clearly not what eminent domain was intended for. Eminent Domain is strictly for public use and was never intended to serve private interests. Those that are doing this use the excuse that a private business would generate tax dollars and jobs that will serve the public, but that is very flawed reasoning. If that is the case, they'll next be raising taxes to build shopping centers to give to private owners so that the tax revenues could be received.

Argue against the misuse of eminent domain all you want, but don't say that the intended purpose of eminent domain is wrong.

As an example, I remember when Sammy Hagar was an unknown. A friend of mine bought one of his albums (the old timey vinyl) after seeing him in concert as an opening act. He made a tape for me from his album and made tapes for others. Before long, those in my little crowd that I ran with knew all about Sammy Hagar and were buying his albums and tapes. That was way before he joined Van Halen.

If you've ever made a copy of an album, tape, or CD for a friend, or have borrowed an album, tape, or CD from a friend to listen to or record then you have done nothing different than those who use music sharing software like Kazaa.

Many use those programs to download songs to hear examples of certain musicians before buying the CD.
