I remember when you could go into two sporting goods stores in Ridgewood and buy ammo, or rifles and shotguns. Sadly, that’s a thing of the past. Since the cityfolk started to move in 25 or so years ago, they brought all of their liberal baggage with them, so the town started to decline. It’s now a bastion of Suburban driving soccer moms, that hate anything that has to do with firearms, and would somehow rather their kids learn about guns from rappers and the media. Heaven forbid, that they had the NRA Eddie Eagle program in the schools to teach kids how to handle a situation like this if THEY found the firearm in the woods. Nah, instead they waste taxpayer money, and employ the usage of SWAT teams so everyone “feels” safe. Makes perfect sense.

"I am amazed when people call the NRA successful as there are huge swaths of land in this nation where people cannot carry guns."

I think it's pretty pathetic that there are, as quoted by wikianswers: "Most estimates range between 39% and 50% of US households having at least one gun(that's about 43-55 million households). The estimates for the number of privately owned guns range from 190 million to 300 million. Removed those that skew the stats for their own purposes the best estimates are about 45% or 52 million of American households owning 260 million guns). there are about 80 million gun owners in America with a combining total of 258 million guns."

And the total NRA membership in the U.S. is 4 million? That's what is really pathetic and amazing. People need to get off of their dead asses and become members. Say what you will, even though people don't always agree with the NRA, they are the largest organization that is working in our favor to stop the dismal tide of anti gun efforts.

It would be awesome if everybody that could, would apply for a CCW from their home state, then immediately apply for the nonresident CCW’s from: VA, NH, FL, UT, CT, AZ, and ME. Then, (depending upon the state in which one resides,) the only states that one could not exercise reciprocity would be: MA, NY, NJ, HI, IL, MD ,and CA, although MA, issues a non resident if you have a home state permit, and NYS may issue a business carry to a nonresident. What do you think?

"He clearly doesn’t have the skills to be an effective parent, so he resorts to throwing a tantrum like a child. It is laughable. His daughter wrote a very thoughtful and well-constructed personal letter that he had no business making public. This shows total disrespect. If he wants respect, he has to show and teach respect. Responding like a 3 year old with a gun is just being stupid. I think the parents in this family are probably slobs and the daughter is pointing out that they aren’t doing their part to properly function as a family.

Dude, are you serious? I don't think he threw a tantrum at all. She's the one that did on two separate occasions, and now she has to pay the piper for her actions. Well crafted letter my ass. This little snit is pissed off because Daddy is making her work, and she has 3 hots and a cot because of it. And NO, she doesn't DESERVE to get paid for anything. I think he's teaching her a valuable lesson, and hopefully when she's old enough, she'll respect him for it. The only thing that I disagree with, is that the father wasted ammunition (hollow points are expensive), because he should have used a chainsaw, or a sledge hammer. At least then, some of the namby pamby antigunners wouldn't have gotten their panties in a bunch. Overall, I think it was a very effective message, and sadly not enough parents do it. Just the other day, I went to visit my sister, and her sixteen year old daughter came down stairs, and did not even bother to say hello, hug her uncle, just proceeded to sit on the couch and sulk about something. Quite the opposite from her brother, yet I still am a bit angry at my sister for not correcting her on the spot. That type of behavior is not tolerated in my house.

Yet when they come to the burbs, they bring all of their mental baggage with them, and try to impose it upon others that don’t share their views. These individuals suffer from “Bloomberg Syndrome.” The meaning is that, they think if it’s good enough for NYC, then it should be good for the rest of the country. They have such a culture of fear, ignorance, and disdain for ANYTHING related to the Second Amendment, that the mere mention of a firearm sends them into convulsions. These dimwits need to learn that NYC is not the center of the universe, and if they don’t like how things operate in the other parts of the country, then they can go back to NYC, and try to redeem that socialist craphole. The sad thing is, that if this happened 60 miles away in N.J. the news reports would be telling of how a 65 year old man was beaten within inches of his life, and is either dead, or on life support. CCW really does make that much of a difference. This old guy didn’t get to pick the time and place of his choosing in which to be mugged, the perps did, and now they’re paying the price. I can’t even begin to state how convoluted and vague certain municipal departments have made the process for applying for a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card, and a Permit to Purchase a Pistol. As I’ve stated in another posts, certain municipalities make up rules as they go along. Some want to run credit checks on the applicant, others call the applicant’s place of employment, others even ask the applicant to get a signed affidavit from the applicant’s landlord, stating that it is permissible to possess a firearm in their rental property. But wait, it gets worse! The law clearly states that you may apply for as many permits as you wish, even though there is currently a one gun a month purchasing restriction(thank you for that, former governor Corzine, you scumbag.) Certain municipalities have tailored it to mean that you can only apply for one purchase permit, and thus have to come back every time you wish to apply for another, thus incurring more issuance costs, and background checks. The permit also states that it is valid for 90 days, and can be renewed for 90 more, if you bring it back to the issuing authority, and to date, many municipalities have even violated that. Not to mention, that the law states that they have 30 days to issue said permits, and there are instances where people have waited upwards of more than six months. They are given such excuses as: The officer that handles the paperwork is not in, he’s sick/on vacation/swamped with other duties, etc, or your references haven’t come back to us.... I could go on and on. The point is, is that this is done by design. The process is meant to be so time consuming, and so aggravating, that it would discourage most people from even bothering to apply in the first place. The fact that an FFL can INSTANTLY run a NICS background check on a prospective purchaser, clearly demonstrates why the NJ State Police does not have to run these checks anymore. Furthermore, the NJSP office that runs these checks is closed on Sundays, so no buying any firearms on your day of rest. You can also see how it discourages impulse buying, especially during the holiday season, where purchases of firearms in other states were soaring, because of all of the monotonous paperwork one needs just to buy one lousy pistol. This needs to stop. People need to stop voting in asshats that support this type of crap, and I’m glad to see we’re making some headway as far as lawsuits are concerned. Keep contributing to the NRA, SAF, and ANJPRC, and hopefully we’ll be done with this insanity very shortly.

No buying guns on Sunday in NJ, because the State Police office that handles the NICS check is closed on Sundays. Apparently an FFL dealer calling it in to have the Feds run the check isn’t good enough, so the state has the NJSP do it. Talk about redundant b.s. .

    Seamus Mc Gillicuddy to DH

There are a myriad of factors that people need to understand about the insane gun laws in NJ. First of which, is that there is no provision for a 2nd Amendment in the State’s constitution. Secondly, are firearms are technically illegal, unless one fits and passes certain exemptions: A firearms purchaser identification card ( in order to purchase and possess long guns), obtaining a permit to purchase a pistol( not for carrying purposes.) Said pistol purchase permits are valid for 90 days, and can be renewed if the issuing department chooses to do so, and one can only purchase (1) handgun every 30 days. These laws are routinely violated by municipal police departments that do not follow the letter of the law when it comes to issuance. There are people that have waited months, even though the law states that 30 days is the time frame to issue purchase permits. On top of that, you have departments that allow only one permit per issuance, even though the law states that you may apply for as many permits as you wish. Certain municipalities also impose additional requirements ( set by the municipalities, not by state law.) Some towns demand a credit check, disclosure to one’s employer, permission from one’s landlord, an affidavit from occupants of the same dwelling stating that it is permissible for one to keep firearms in their dwelling. All of these are illegal, contrary to state law, and certainly do not pass constitutional muster. Furthermore, the former attorney general has made statements to the effect that if NJ did go right to carry, more police would need to be hired to protect the public from such persons who routinely carry firearms. Folks, I’m not making this up. It really is this bad, and it’s going to take a case to the Supreme Court to drag the state kicking and screaming back into compliance. The “justifiable need” clause to qualify for a carry permit is arbitrary, capricious, and unconstitutional to say the least. I highly recommend all residents of New Jersey make it a priority to donate to the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs, the Second Amendment Society, and the NRA. As I’ve stated in the past, the culture toward firearms in the State of New Jersey is one of fear and ignorance, and only through education, and legal action against the state can we ever hope to bring New Jersey back into mainstream America as it pertains to our God given right to keep and bear arms.

I’ve lived in NJ my whole life, save 4 years of college, and three years in the service. I always tell people that if you eliminated the cities from the voting equation in NJ, NJ would be a solidly conservative state. It’s the fekkin’ morons that vote these asshats into the legislature, and vote for mummified remains such as Frank “I hate the Constitution” Lautenberg, and Bob “cojones-free” Menendez, that are the reason why this state is in the toilet. It is just mystifies me that somehow, I can partake in a God given right in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and carry either openly or concealed, but the minute I go home, I have to unload and lock, lest I get stopped by the police, and arrested for carrying w/o a permit, which I couldn’t apply for anyway, because I’d be denied by a judge due to “lack of justifiable need.” And they wonder why people are leaving this state in droves.

"New York believes it does not have to follow the Constitution. It is one of only six states that does not have a state constitutional protection of the right to keep and bear arms. New York City was one of the promoters of modern gun control, after the wave of prohibitions on concealed carry that occured during reconstruction, aimed at recently freed slaves. The New York Sullivan law was promoted and passed by the thuggish Tim Sullivan, one of New York Cities well know organized crime politicians, in order to protect his own thugs from armed citizens."

New Jersey does not have any provision for the 2nd Amendment in it's constitution, either. Technically, all firearms are illegal in NJ, unless the owner meets certain exemptions. It's a total farce, but the cities in NJ keep electing these scumbags into the legislature that support this crap, and the governor is not the slightest bit motivated to move NJ towards right to carry.

In an ideal setting, after she asked the cop, the cop should have said: “ Sorry ma’am, there are no facilities here where you can check your firearm.” That’s what a cop would have said in any state that respects the Second Amendment. However, in NYC, they probably train their officers in the academy to have a bias against citizens that are carrying, so naturally the NYPD officer is going to have to fish for something. It’s also pretty stupid that they have signs like that, because we all know criminals aren’t going to pay attention anyway. Yes, she should have checked state laws, but NYC’s gun laws are unconstitutional, and need to be eradicated post haste. She should not see a day of jail. There was no intent to commit any crimes.

Pennsylvania has some of the best gun laws in the nation. You don’t have to “legally register” any firearm there. So, obviously the reporter was fluffing up the report to make people that are ignorant to the PA’s laws feel better. Put this story over the river in NJ, and it would have read as follows: “Police arrested 46 year old female, after shooting alleged robber in her stairway. The woman’s “legally registered” firearm has been confiscated by police, and the woman is being held by authorities pending further further investigation. The alleged burglar was sent to the hospital, and treated for his wounds. The alleged burglar’s family intends to sue the woman for violating his civil rights. No word yet on the condition of the son......” A little stretched, but you get my point. NJ really has fallen that far.

While the loss of a father, and NYPD veteran is indeed tragic, there is no gun law that could have prevented this, as obviously many were broken. Furthermore, why should someone's right to defend themselves end just because they are entering NYC? What stinks is that if you have a CCW for upstate, you still can’t carry in NYC unless you have an endorsement from the NYPD. But if you’re “lucky” enough to have a NYC issued unrestricted permit, you can carry all over the state. Total arbitrary and capricious crap, and is racist in it’s roots. See the Sullivan law. People that support this bilge are supporting laws that were intended to disarm minorities, though they’ll never admit to that. As far as NJ is concerned, I think in order to qualify for public office, you have to openly declare your hatred for anything related to the 2nd Amendment. Merely mentioning the word “gun” in front of a judge, may get you sentenced to 7 years in States prison, because of all of the carnage and mayhem that law abiding citizens create when they decide to arm themselves!!!!!

A Glock 36 chambered in .45ACP, with Meprolight night sights, Pearce 1+ round extensions for the magazines, is an extremely good setup. A good Kydex holster, or a reinforced leather IWB holster, makes for a good carry package. Once you’re comfortable with shooting the Glock (put at least 500 rounds through it, and definitely plenty of hollow points, because you want to shoot what you carry,)you can check out companies like Lone Wolf Distributors, who specialize in upgrade accessories for the Glock product line.

I watched it last night. The host has been on the Military Channel before, in a cool series where he had to go spec ops, and infiltrate, seize and destroy objectives. Regarding the current show, I thought it was very informative, but I think it would have been better if they concentrated more on the evolution of the M1911A1 itself, and brought in upgraded versions, and other brand names such as Wilson Combat, Les Baer, ETC. And since they made mention of the fact that a lot of current spec ops/MARSOC units still have them in their inventory, a view of the MEUSOC .45, and a quick trip to the USMC’s Armorer’s (PMI, I think it’s called.) would have boosted the show over the top.

With the exception of having to purchase pistols in NJ, because of the dumb federal laws, whenever I buy ammo, or accessories, I usually try to do it online, or out of state. I absolutely refuse to spend my money to pay taxes on firearms products in NJ, because I know that the money spent will probably go to the brain-dead morons that pass laws to further curtail my 2nd amendment rights. Why I need to show an FID to purchase pistol ammo is completely bogus. It is none of the State’s business, period. NJ’s gov’t is so brazenly anti 2nd amendment, that the last attorney general had the gall to send out a form letter to FFL’s and firearms dealers in PA to create a log of NJ residents that purchased products from them. Well, the long and short of it is that the vast majority of them told AG Anne Milgram to go screw a lamppost. The sad thing is, is that if you eliminated all of the socialist toilet cities of NJ, we’d be a solid conservative state. It’s just one of those situations where because the cities are so populated with socialist, welfare-entitlement collecting morons, that the rest of the normal populace has to suffer. It’s no wonder that the state’s population is shrinking.

So it's ok for a retired officer in New York to carry a firearm on campus, which obviously it doesn't seem that he's to proficient in doing, and law abiding students can't because ?????????

Is a commercial grade of an M14, the same thing as an M1A? Is it as much the same as the “commercial grade” of an M16 is an AR15? They’d have wasted less ink if they just called it what it was, but we all know how the media likes to use all of those grandiose words ‘bout them eeeeevil firearms to scare us, right? I wonder what the commercial grade of a howitzer is...

"Utah, a state with notably lax standards for concealed-carry permits,"

Clueless reporter alert. Of all the CCWs available to out of state residents, Utah is one of the most difficult. It requires a state certified instructor, a set number of hours for the course and live fire proficiency.

I just found Massachusetts' guidelines for applying for a nonresident permit: http://www.mass.gov/Eeops/docs/chsb/firearms/Non-resident_20100126.pdf

It is not that much different than Utah's, other than that Mass' is more expensive, and only valid for one year. Also, for Mass, if you are a resident, the police chief of your municipality or city gets to decide the licensing requirements. Some are more pro 2A than others, but the key here is that broad discretion is given to an entity whose job should be enforcing, not interpreting the laws.

Once again, this is a prime example of a reporter that never bothered to do the research, and instead chooses to interject their opinion rather than fact. I'm not surprised to hear that coming from a Masshole, though. No offense intended toward Massachusetts residents that have to live with this insanity.

My Pop told me a story how my Great Grandfather had a job in his youth, where he worked on a train that would travel near the Housatonic River in CT. His job was to shoot at the mountain lions that would jump onto the tops of the train cars. Not sure how much that paid in those days, and a job like that sure as hell wouldn’t exist today!

As an alum of one of the prestigious universities located in the city of brotherly love, I became quite used to hearing automatic weapon fire, pistol and shotgun fire, and packs of feral youths screaming obscenities just outside my dormitory and off campus. None of the schools there are in what one would consider nice neighborhoods. We’d go out to the Villanova bars, or into Center City to avoid any problems with the locals. I visited there last weekend for a birthday party, and you can bet your sweet patootie that the “Austrian Hardware” was nestled very nicely in my Galco IWB. I will not walk the streets there otherwise, and under any circumstances unless I have protection. The economy is so bad, people down there are desperate, so stories like the one mentioned here come as no surprise. Perhaps now, the older gentleman will go to the store and buy a nice Glock 36 with the extended magazines, or even a Ruger LCR with a Crimson Trace laser, chambered in .357.
