If “The Real O’Neals” went to confession, a thousand Hail Marys wouldn’t be penance enough. snip. One wonders how network programmers would react if the offensive jokes heard here were used against another religious group. But Catholics are fair game.

Advocates for gun rights and gun control squared off during an occasionally testy two-hour debate on the Saint Peter's University campus last night. The gun rights supporters were outnumbered four to two but they kept the debate lively. At one point, Alexander P. Roubian, president of the New Jersey Second Amendment Society, elicited a snippy response from former Gov. James Florio when Roubian said Florio's re-election defeat could be attributed to the assault-weapon ban Florio signed into law in 1990. "So what?" Florio said. "What has that got to do with anything?"

Heinlein, 47, said he had a difficult time getting police to respond, and after the bus was stopped and evacuated near the Holland Tunnel, other passengers aimed their anger at him, he said.
