Nearly 20 percent of Silver Bow County residents - or 6,700 people - are living below the federal poverty level, the executive director of the local Human Resources Council said Wednesday. This is 5.2 percent more than the national poverty rate of 14.8 percent. A family of four must be earning less than $24,250 annually in order to be considered to be living below the poverty line. Butte's poverty rate is up 10 percent from where it was in 2010, when the country was struck by the recession, Margie Seccomb said.

A herd of elk was hit by a train east of Helena Thursday morning, killing 23 animals. The crash occurred near the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and Spokane Creek Road, about three miles east of East Helena.

Local sheriffs are seeing a continuing uptick in applications for concealed weapon permits. "We've seen an increase in new applications along with the renewals we get," said Butte-Silver Bow Undersheriff George Skuletich Friday. Some officials say the world's violent climate has residents on edge and ready to arm themselves for self-protection. "I really see people wanting to take that self-defense stance," said Wynn Meehan, sheriff for Broadwater County. "I think it's a benefit. Everyone has a right to protect themselves, but do it educated and cautiously," he added.
