THE BUZZ Ambassador Franklin Graham was helping Muslims before helping Muslims was cool: Since when did that become a threat to U.S. interests? By Mindy Belz Franklin Graham was handing out shoeboxes to Bosnian Muslim children before most Americans knew where Bosnia was. Longstanding humanitarian work in Muslim countries, however, didn't stop members of the press from pouncing on the son of evangelist Billy Graham for planning to help people in Iraq. Mr. Graham, who heads the humanitarian organization Samaritan's Purse, told the website Beliefnet that his organization was "poised and ready" to move emergency supplies into Iraq once the...

THE BUZZ Worse Than War War kills, but Saddam's "peacetime" regime is even more bloody. By Marvin Olasky In 1951 Douglas MacArthur told Congress that "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away." In 1954 Bing Crosby sang in White Christmas, "What do you do with a general when he stops being a general?" Today, the answer is obvious: Old generals don't fade away, they go on cable networks and complain about current strategy, often kissing up to media pessimists by acting like Boston Red Sox fans who yell "Down the drain" after the first inning. After a few days...

I was wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between the USMC (the Marine) and the U.S. Merchant Marines? I am a 46 yr. old woman who's dad served in WWII in the Merchant Marines. He died years after being discharged at the age of 48. I know he was on the S.S. Pulpit Rock during the war, in 1945 because I have letters he wrote to my mom during that time. My mom passed away a little over a week ago and it got me to thinking once again about my dad's service. I know little more than...

Well-Intended Failure An elite journalist reinforces the stereotypes that he sets out to dismiss. By R. Albert Mohler A COLUMN HEADLINED "GOD, Satan, and the Media" in The New York Times is almost certain to get attention. The Times rarely names God or Satan in its headlines, and adding "media" to the mix must have sent journalists into apoplexy. What is going on here? Columnist Nicholas D. Kristof takes his colleagues in the elite media to the woodshed in his March 4 column, accusing "nearly all of us" in the news business of being "completely out of touch with a...

Avella, Jennings Stripped of Council Committee Posts By Courtney Dentch 02/20/2003 The two Democratic city councilmen from Queens who voted against Mayor Michael Bloomberg's property tax hike in November were stripped of their posts on council committees last week in apparent retribution from Speaker Gifford Miller (D-Manhattan) for opposing the tax increase. Allan Jennings (D-Jamaica) was removed from his seat on the prominent Finance Committee and Tony Avella (D-Bayside) was taken out of his spot on the Rules, Privileges and Elections Committee in a council vote Feb. 12. Neither councilman was moved from a committee chairmanship. The committee membership changes...

Born in 1917 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, I was left a virtual orphan by the death of my mother when I was only one year old. Brought to West Virginia by my aunt and uncle to be reared as their own, I grew up in various communities in the bituminous coalfields, mastering life's early lessons and learning its duties as a miner's son, and graduating as valedictorian of my high school class in the depths of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Unable at the time to afford college tuition, I sought employment wherever I found an opportunity --...

From the FLASHTRAFFIC, Political Buzz From Washington By Joel C. Rosenberg With a war against Iraq looming, Mr. Forrester's apparent new oppontent may be vulnerable to the charge that he's weak on national security. In 1991, then-Sen. Lautenberg voted against authorizing military force aainst Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War. He predicted "tens of thousands of American casulties" and a new U.S. draft, and he warned the U.S. could end up destroying Kuwait in the process of trying to liberate it. That same year, he backed an amendment that would have cut defense spending by $80 billion. Mr. Lautenberg's record...

    Question from ME
I did a search on O'Reilly but came up blank in regard to the nature of my inquiry. Here are my questions. Did anyone notice on tonight's O'Reilly Factor (the part where he was hosing, not him appearing in clips from earlier in the week which he plays on Sats.) that Bill appeared to have some sort of injury? I noticed that on his upper left cheekbone, just below his eye it was puffy or swollen and a wee bit red, even with the TV makeup on. I called my son's attention to it asking him if he saw it. ...

American Flag w/Green Stripes Instead of Red. I saw this flag at the prayer service at Yankee Stadium last Sunday ... and am wondering if anyone can tell me what that flag is? It looks very much like Old Glory except the red stripes are replaced with green stipes. I'd appreciate any info on that flag.

I ask your indulgence of this vanity post. It will be short. I just wanted to express my great disappointment and saddness about the fact that while my family was at a prayer service for this city (NYC) last night the American Flag on my house (left illuminated according to flag ettiqute)was stolen. I was just flabbergasted! They took the flag, pole and all. Not only am I appalled by the act but I am also greatly saddened since it is nearly or possibly to get an American flag anywhere now.

Hello all... I'm still on vacation but am thrilled to report that Bonnie's surgery went very well! The operation was on Friday, Aug. 17th. She asked to be at the hospital at 10:15 am for a 1:15 surgery. She didn't get into surgery until 4:45! The surgery took 4 hours and went well. They were able to save part of the lung, taking only one lobe instead of both, but that lung will never work because they had to close off her bronchial tube to that lung, so her remaining lung must be exercised to do the work for both ...
