HORSE SPRINGS, N.M. — Wranglers at the Platt ranch were marking calves the old-fashioned way last week, roping them from horseback and burning a brand onto their haunches. What they were emphatically not doing, said Jay Platt, the third-generation proprietor of the ranch, was abiding by a federally recommended livestock identification plan, intended to speed the tracing of animal diseases, that has caused an uproar among ranchers. They were not attaching the recommended tags with microchips that would allow the computerized recording of livestock movements from birth to the slaughterhouse. “This plan is expensive, it’s intrusive, and there’s no need...

Seventy university professors were detained in Iran in a widening government crackdown on protesters, according to a Web site affiliated with Iran's key opposition figure, Mir Hossein Mousavi, who says he was robbed of victory in a rigged presidential election. The professors were detained on Wednesday, immediately after meeting with Mousavi, said the Kalemeh site, which is affiliated with the opposition leader. The report said it is not clear where the detainees were taken. Hundreds protesters and activists are believed to have been taken into custody since the June 12 vote, in which Iran's ruling clerics declared hard-line President Mahmoud...

(IsraelNN.com) U.S. Federal Judge Richard M. Berman sentenced on Tuesday a New York resident who broadcast satellite television programming of the Hizbullah terrorist organization to more than a year in prison. Saleh Elahwal pleaded guilty to providing material support to the terrorist organization's Al Manar news network between September 2005 and August 2006. He was sentenced to a year and five months. Israel, the U.S., and many European countries define the Lebanese-based Hizbullah organization a terrorist organization, prohibiting any transaction with a terrorist organization. Elahwal's sentencing comes two months after the main defendant, Javed Iqbal, was ordered by a federal...

Twenty people were killed at rallies across Iran on Tuesday, as opposition activists demontrated against the disputed results of last week's presidential elections, according to various media reports. Meanwhile, Iran's top legislative body said Tuesday it was ready to recount the votes in the election won by hardline incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iran's Guardian Council said a recount of disputed ballot boxes may lead to changes in candidates' tally, according to the television report. Defeated candidate Mirhossein Mousavi has appealed to the council for the election to be annulled, but has said he was not optimistic about its verdict. Also on...

In the first six months of the Obama administration, we have witnessed an assault on the truth of a magnitude not seen since the Nixon Watergate years. The prevarication is ironic given the Obama campaign’s accusations that the Bush years were not transparent and that Hillary Clinton, like her husband, was a chronic fabricator. Remember Obama’s own assertions that he was a “student of history” and that “words mean something. You can’t just make stuff up.” Yet Obama’s war against veracity is multifaceted. Trotskyization. Sometimes the past is simply airbrushed away. Barack Obama has a disturbing habit of contradicting his...

Former Vice President Al Gore may be sent to North Korea to negotiate the release of two American journalists on trial, the AFP reported. Laura Ling and Euna Lee, reporters for Gore's California-based Current TV, were arrested March 17 near the North Korean border while on a reporting trip to China on charges they entered the country illegally and engaged in "hostile acts" — allegations that could draw a 10-year sentence in a labor camp. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly did not rule out the possibility of Gore being sent when asked if it would make sense for him to...

House Republicans are finalizing their plan to overhaul the financial regulatory system, which would direct failing companies into bankruptcy instead of bailouts and would strip the Federal Reserve of its oversight authority on the financial industry, according to people close to the discussions. These people described the plan as one that “stops rewarding failure,” ensures “taxpayers are never again asked to pick up the tab for bad bets on Wall Street” and restores “market discipline.” Republican members of the House Financial Services Committee are aiming to complete their proposal with House Republican leadership by Tuesday. House Democrats and the Obama...

Wasn't it just a couple of days ago that the crew over at the Daily Kos was fretting about how conservatives as a whole are equally as complicit in the murder of George Tiller as the shooter himself? And of the details being reported to better understand the background of the actual killer, Scott Roeder, doesn't one major detail involve the posts that he left on anti-abortion Web sites? snip Excerpts below the jump (Warning! Offensive language, equally offensive to those with an education)... Referring to Malkin's husband, the ‘writer' describes him as ...an equally bright boy who was more...

(IsraelNN.com) Global media report that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu "stood firm" against pressure from the Obama administration Monday on the issue of a "two-state solution" with the Palestinian Authority. “The Israeli prime minister stood firm,” reported France24 after the talk between President Barack Obama and Israel Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. “He said he is ready to negotiate with the Palestinians but only if they recognized Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state.” The combination of “Israel” and “stood firm” – an uncommon one in news reports from recent years – also appeared in a report by the London Telegraph....

WASHINGTON: At a time when the world is reeling under the impact of an economic crisis, PepsiCo chairwoman and one of the most influential women of the world Indra Nooyi believes that the corporate sector needs to rethink its role and adapt itself with the changing times. "Aristotle once said that the unexamined life is not worth living. I think it's time to examine what we do once more in the spirit of a critical friend. Let's pause for a moment to consider what we need to examine," she said while addressing a meeting of CEOs at the Economy Club...

Muslims/Arabs Concerned About McKinney's Possible Replacement (CNSNews.com) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations wants the man who beat Cynthia McKinney in Tuesday's congressional runoff election to meet with Muslim and Arab-American leaders -- "to discuss his recent remarks implying that voters with Arabic names may be 'terrorists.'" According to CAIR, Johnson -- in a televised debate with Rep. Cynthia McKinney -- said, "...but since we're talking about Middle East policy, I will say that the abundant number of contributors to Mrs. McKinney's campaign are, have Palestinian and Arab surnames, now I could accuse her of being under the control of...
