Prosecutors Wednesday dropped their case against a Colorado Springs liquor store owner who was arrested in 2010 on suspicion of shooting a shoplifter he allegedly chased into the parking lot. Chang Ho Yi, 58, faced a potential charge of attempted first-degree murder, though prosecutors never officially charged him with a crime. Bryson Dewberry, then 22, was wounded in the jaw, and a second person hit in the leg, when Yi fired once into a car after the Oct. 25 theft at Austin Bluffs Plaza Liquor, Colorado Springs police said at the time. The thief jumped into the car after stealing...

The concealed weapons file maintained by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation will be purged by June 30 under the "sunset provision" of Colorado statute 18-12-206(3)(b) by the 2007 Colorado General Assembly. Information previously submitted by law enforcement agencies regarding concealed carry weapons permits statewide will no longer be available, Chaffee County Sheriff Pete Palmer said recently. Palmer said the Colorado bureau will no longer accept or maintain future data. "All other provisions of the state law remain in effect," he said. Colorado residents will be allowed to receive concealed handgun permits and previously issued valid permits remain valid. The database...

Guns are no longer allowed in any building owned or operated by Greeley-Evans School District 6. The Board of Education voted 4-1 to change a district policy that previously allowed guns in buildings other than schools. Member Brett Reese voted against the passage, saying it was a violation of Second Amendment rights. Mark Hinze and Julia Richard were not present. “Taking my gun away because I might shoot someone is like taking my tongue out because I might yell fire in a crowded theater,” Reese said. “It's a simple fact, isn't that a simple fact when you think about it?...

A ban on concealed weapons on a university campus would appear to make sense. After all, it's been less than five years since the shooting at Virginia Tech, a tragedy that still resonates around the country. But what happens when a student group sues to overturn the ban? That is the question the University of Colorado is litigating in its state's highest court. On Wednesday, lawyers for CU and Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC) argued the case before the Colorado Supreme Court. SCCC feels the university campus falls under the umbrella of the state's Concealed Carry Act of...

Denver – The arrest of 11 undocumented immigrants at a dairy farm east of Denver has alarmed Hispanics in the area, the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, or CIRC, said Thursday. Wednesday's raid at the Wildcat Dairy in Fort Morgan was the result of a "routine" review of the employment eligibility forms, known as I-9s, submitted by the farm's employees, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said. "Our allies in Fort Morgan report fear and confusion from workers and community members in the wake of this 'operation', clearly undermining local integration and community building initiatives," the CIRC's policy director, attorney Hans Meyer,...

A would-be robber apparently brought a knife to a gunfight Tuesday night in northeast Colorado Springs. Police said a man had just finished washing his car at the Power Wash north of Woodmen Road near Rangewood Drive at about 8 p.m. Another man walked up carrying a knife and demanded his money. The victim, sitting in his car, acted as though he was reaching for his wallet. Much to the robber’s surprise, the man grabbed a semi-automatic hand gun. According to police, the robber ran away immediately. A K9 unit unsuccessfully searched for the man to the north of the...

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- Neighbors at Bear Valley Club Apartments on 3643 South Sheridan Boulevard woke up to shots fired on Friday night. "I could've sworn I heard at least five gun shots. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom," said neighbor Robert Ostrander. Jefferson County sherrif's deputies said a security guard was patrolling the apartments when he saw two suspicious people in a black car. Police said he saw a woman, 30-year-old Amber Rose Angers, standing outside of a small black car with the passenger door open, and a man, 42-year-old Cameron Mitchell Lundstrom, sitting in the driver’s seat of the...

DENVER (CBS4) – A man suspected of bombing a synagogue in California has been arrested after drawing the attention of authorities in Denver. Ron Hirsch, 60, is accused of planting a homemade explosive device at Chabad House Lubavitch in Santa Monica last week. The FBI says just hours after the explosion, which damaged the building but didn’t injure anyone, Hirsch bought a ticket to New York and made a stop in Denver. In Denver, at the Greyhound station downtown, he allegedly bought a new ticket and was last seen headed east. Authorities released photos of Hirsch at the bus stop...

A federal program aimed at identifying illegal immigrants is in its infancy in Colorado, but critics charge it has racked up a troubling record in areas where it has operated for as long as 2 ½ years. At issue is Secure Communities, a rapidly expanding initiative in which federal authorities check fingerprints collected by jails against an immigration database. Government officials say the new fingerprint procedures — involving hundreds of detention facilities across the country, including El Paso County’s — are focused on getting “criminal aliens” off the streets for good. Immigrant groups dispute that portrayal, pointing to federal figures...

Springs man's claim to have Obama records starts buzz A Colorado Springs “birther,” retired Air Force Col. Gregory Hollister, has Internet blogs abuzz with what may be an illegal foray into an online Social Security data base and how he obtained a copy of President Barack Obama’s draft registration from 1980. “Col. Greg Hollister, USAF (Ret.) contacted the Selective Service, falsely impersonated President Obama, improperly registered his own address as President Obama’s address, and by this false impersonation and identity theft he managed to obtain a duplicate registration acknowledgement card with President Obama’s Selective Service information on it,” a blogger...

It's the latest internet sensation--amateur footage of three red lights in a triangular formation hovering in the night sky above the town of Lafayette in Colorado. The video, shot last Monday, shows that the sky was clear and witnesses said they could not see anything connecting the lights. Leroy Vandervegt, a 50-year-old who has lived in Lafayette for 16 years, shot the video Sunday evening after his 17-year-old son saw the glowing orbs move from south west to south east along the horizon. 'I had no idea what it is,' he said. 'It wasn't a satellite, it wasn't an airplane

FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- On March 2, House Bill 1205 passed in the Colorado House by a 20 to 15 vote. House Bill 1205, introduced by state Representative Chris Holbert (R-44), would allow residents to carry a concealed handgun without a permit as long as they are legally eligible to purchase and possess a firearm. The NRA strongly supports the constitutional right of Coloradans to carry for self-defense. Despite NRA support for this bill, HB 1205 faces an uphill battle as the Democratic leadership in the state Senate has consistently assigned pro-gun bills to the Senate State, Military & Veterans Affairs...

Loveland police have agreed to pay $15,000 to a man who claimed his rights were violated in 2008 when officers temporarily took away the handgun he was carrying on his hip. Police also will beef up training of officers on the constitutional rights to bear arms and against unreasonable search and seizure. Loveland resident Bill Miller, 72, filed suit in July 2010 in U.S. District Court in Denver alleging police violated his constitutional rights when they questioned him, seized his gun and emptied it of ammunition when he was on the south shore of Lake Loveland in October 2008. Miller...

The owner of a 70-pound greyhound said Thursday that he exhausted all options before pulling his handgun on a 140-pound dog that had latched its jaws around his greyhound’s neck. “I had no choice but to shoot into the dog and kill him,” Robert McCombs said. Tammy Martinez, who owned the dog shot to death, was served a summons Thursday afternoon on suspicion of unlawful ownership of a dangerous animal, a misdemeanor, according to Joe Stafford, director of animal services at the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. Martinez identifed her dog as a bullmastiff. The incident left McCombs’...

Thanks for saving our lives, but please leave now, because we don’t like what you stand for. That is the message Jeanne Assam says she received last year when she informed the powers-that-be at New Life Church that she is gay. It was Assam, you’ll remember, who was widely hailed as a hero for ending a murderous rampage at New Life Dec. 9, 2007. On that morning, 24-year-old Matthew Murray shot and killed two New Life parishioners after having murdered two others the night before at a training center for Christian missionaries in Arvada. Heavily armed, Murray would have killed...

DENVER -- A controversial measure that would allow gun owners to carry concealed weapons without permits, and thus avoid a second round of background checks, is moving forward. House Bill 1205, sponsored by Rep. Chris Holbert, R-Parker, sailed through the House Judiciary Committee on an 8-3 vote, despite opposition from gun-control groups. Holbert, a gun-owner himself, wrote the bill along with Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, a group of Second Amendment advocates who find the second round of backround checks for concealed-carry permits unnecessary. "I can carry open on my home town streets, but if I put my coat over my...

Colorado --(Ammoland.com)- Friday State Rep. Chris Holbert (R-Parker) and State Sen. Greg Brophy (R-Wray) introduced HB1205, the Constitutional Carry Act of 2011. This bill is designed to do one thing: allow citizens who are legally eligible to possess handguns to carry that handgun without obtaining a costly, burdensome and bureaucratic permit. One of the chief advantages this bill presents is that citizens are not put on any government tracking list merely for carrying the tools for self defense. Citizens in Vermont, Alaska and Arizona currently enjoy that right, and Wyoming could be joining that list in the next few months....

A U.S. District Court halted the imposition of a new Internet sales tax law last week. The court granted a preliminary injunction against the law, arguing discriminates against out-of-state retailers and violates the Commerce Clause. The case was brought by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) following the passage of HB 1193 in last year's legislative session. The law enforces three obligations which violate the constitution. The bill requires out-of-state retailers that do not collect Colorado sales tax to notify Colorado customers of their requirement to remit taxes to the Department of Revenue. Retailers must also report the customer’s name and...
