Fellow Freepers, I am looking into getting my son (13, soon to be 14) a build-it-yourself computer kit. He has ripped apart a couple of old laptops, but they don't have compatible parts. I am looking for a kit that he can use to learn to put together a working cpu that is usable and can be loaded with an operating system. I see a couple available on Amazon, but one looks too simplistic and the other is too complicated. When it comes to hardware and operating systems, I am very much a novice. I welcome your insights. Thanks so...

Good morning! I thought it odd that I hadn't received notice of updates on windows 7 so I went to the update panel and the only update was for windows 10. Then I noticed the little blue link "show all available updates" and went to the page where you select your updates. I selected all 34 that are there. Clicked okay, and when I got back to the update page up in the panel where you click start download is the same one and only aggravating windows 10 update I DO NOT WANT. I'm already having a bad morning and...

A new home shopping channel plans to make buying a gun as simple as calling the number on your screen. Starting in 2016, a network called Gun TV will join the peddlers of jewelry, weight loss programs and kitchen gadgets that regularly populate the odd hours of late night television. Its tagline: "Live Shopping. Fully Loaded." The channel, owned by a parent company called the Social Responsibility Network, will air mostly shopping programming for guns, ammunition and hunting accessories for six early-morning hours every day with goals of eventually ramping up to a 24/7 operation, according to the Desert Sun...

Donald Trump wants the world to acknowledge his ridiculous story about people cheering on 9/11, so today he printed some articles from the web and shared them on Periscope. Normally we might think that printing out websites and streaming them on a smartphone is a senile act, but don't let Trump fool you. Every time he speaks on Periscope, he'll deal another blow to media's traditional gatekeepers. Here's an inconvenient truth about Donald Trump: regardless of his electoral viability, he's completely owning the mainstream media. It's really not a contest. The formula for Trump's media dominance is simple: Donald Trump...

The tech-industry-backed advocacy group FWD.us plans to fight Donald Trump’s call for mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, which underpins the billionaire’s 2016 presidential election campaign. The group, founded by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other tech leaders, is looking to mobilize the business and technology communities to speak out against the notion of deporting the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States. (This comes just after Zuckerberg announced he plans to give away most of his wealth to help promote equality.) “We want to make clear to people what the stakes are, and that we are strongly against...

More than 30 “White Student Union†pages have recently sprung up over the last several days on Facebook, pages that affiliate themselves with various universities around the nation. The creation of an “Illini White Student Union†Facebook page that surfaced Nov. 18 in response to a “Black Student Solidarity Rally†at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign gained national attention, but apparently it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Over the last week, at least 33 other “White Student Union†pages have appeared on Facebook, according to research conducted Sunday by The College Fix. Notably, “White Student Union†Facebook pages...

From Avis Facebook, new statement. Guess they Varsity team took over. (much better statement) We have investigated the denial of a rental that recently occurred in Manhattan. We have found that we have been inconsistent in applying our policies with respect to documentation requirements with this customer, who has rented from us in the past without providing a second form of identification. We are committed to providing an outstanding car rental experience to our customers and believe that we should have done better here. We have spoken with the customer and apologized for the misunderstanding that occurred as a result...

Update: Campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler said the University will continue to work with Facebook to have the Illini White Student Union page removed from the site. “It is disturbing and cowardly that someone would create an anonymous and senseless social media page specifically designed to intimidate others, including and especially our students. When we became aware of the page, we immediately contacted Facebook and requested that it be removed," Kaler said in an email. "Facebook has been responsive to our requests, but the page continues to be reposted. We are continuing to work with Facebook to address this matter. We...

Hello FReeper friends. For the first time in several years, I've got a few bucks to spare. I'd like to finally upgrade from my old CRT television to a flat-screen TV. I'm also investigating the various options for streaming video to the TV via WiFi. I'm looking at devices like Roku and Amazon's FireTV -- especially because Amazon is having a Black Friday deal on the FireTV stick. However, the TVs that I'm looking at all are WiFi enabled. So here's my question: unless I really, really want features specific to FireTV, do I really need it (or Roku) if...

A user charts how many times the full names of contenders from both parties are mentioned in comments. If this 2016 presidential run doesn’t pan out for Bernie Sanders, the Democratic senator from Vermont might want to see about replacing the snoo as Reddit’s corporate mascot....

It is as if Free Republic were typed on a typewriter missing an important letter. It hurts the eyes and is hard to read. Has it been addressed? Is it difficult to fix? What up with that?

When Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, made a snide comment about jourÂnalists during Tuesday’s fourth Republican PresÂiÂdential debate, hundreds of jourÂnalists clustered in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, media filing center shared a moment. While responding to critÂicisms of Donald Trump’s firm stance against illegal immiÂgration, Cruz said many people disregard immiÂgration as an economic issue. He blamed this misunÂderÂstanding partially on the mainÂstream media’s coverage of it. To emphasize his point, Cruz argued that the media would cover the issue differently if undocÂuÂmented immiÂgrants entering the United States were applying for jourÂnalism jobs. “I will say, the politics of it would be...

Creation of a 'digital' president: Like the rest of him, Obama's digitalized image is one that deceives us In the braggadocio of the 20 digital gurus who both created and continue to maintain President Barack Obama’s omnipresent digital image, comes irrefutable proof of another Bill Clinton email lie: From yesterday’s New York Times: “He (Obama) “follows only 70 accounts on Twitter, mostly government agencies, members of his cabinet and senior staff, Chicago sports teams and Bill Clinton, (Emphasis CFP’s). If, as Obama’s digital gurus claim in the ‘Obama the Digital King’ story that he follows Bill Clinton as one of...

Uh-oh. By now, everyone knows that Hillary was running a largely unsecured email server out of her New York home. We also know that hundreds of the emails that passed through that system contained classified information. Now, thanks to the Washington Free Beacon, we know that upon assuming her role as Secretary of State, Hillary signed a Sensitive Compartmented Information Nondisclosure Agreement (SCI). The document outlined her responsibilities in dealing with classified information, and made her aware of the criminal penalties associated with failing to meet them.
