Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) said it would split into two listed companies, separating its computer and printer businesses from its faster-growing corporate hardware and services operations, and eliminate another 5,000 jobs as part of its turnaround plan. HP said its shareholders would own a stake in both businesses through a tax-free transaction next year, the details of which still needed to be worked out. Each business contributes about half of HP's revenue and profit. Shares of the 75-year-old company, which has struggled to adapt to the new era of mobile and online computing, were up 4 percent at $36.60 in early trading...

Criminals have discovered a flaw in OS X, the Mac operating system, and are using it to control thousands of Apple computers around the world. The Russian security company Dr. Web first discovered the software, known as "Mac.BackDoor.iWorm." We don't yet know how the software spreads, but Dr. Web has released information on the clever way it connects to the criminals who control the program. When a Mac is infected with Mac.BackDoor.iWorm, the program tries to make a connection to a command server. The iWorm reportedly uses Reddit's search function to find comments left by the criminals in a Minecraft...

The maker of hit mobile video game Angry Birds, Rovio, will lay off 130 staff, it announced on Thursday. The job cuts in Finland, which account for 16% of its workforce, will happen "sooner rather than later," said chief executive Mikael Hed on its website. "We have been building our team on assumptions of faster growth than have materialised," he added. Angry Birds is the number one paid mobile application of all time, according to Rovio. The company has expanded the brand into a TV series, toys, clothing and an animated movie, which is expected to premiere in cinemas in...

New malware targeting Mac machines, opening backdoors on them and roping them into a botnet currently numbering around 17,000 zombies has been spotted and analyzed by malware researchers of Russian AV company Dr. Web. The malware, dubbed Mac.BackDoor.iWorm, targets computers running OS X and makes extensive use of encryption in its routines, the researchers noted. What's even more interesting is that it gets the IP address of a valid command and control (C&C) server from a post on popular news site Reddit. Unfortunately, the researchers didn't mention how the malware spreads, but they shared that it is unpacked into the...

I switched from Windows 7 to Windows 8 from day one, and although I’ve dabbled with Start buttons, Classic Shell being the preferred choice, I learned to live with the Start screen, something that became easier once Microsoft released Windows 8.1 and 8.1 Update. But now that Windows 10 Technical Preview is here, it’s time to once again embrace the Start menu.Windows 10’s Start menu is the perfect blend of Windows 7 and Windows 8.x. Click the Start button and the menu appears, displaying icons on the left and tiles on the right. The top of the Start menu shows...

I just received a disturbing e-mail from Jane.com. I used to enjoy shopping on this site because they have reasonably priced boutique-esque items sent in daily e-mails. The e-mail was information about a fundraiser they have started for Girls Inc. If you didn’t already know, Girls Inc. is an unapologetically pro-abortion organization that promotes sexual activity and abortion rights for girls. Douglas Scott, president of Life Decisions International says about Girls Inc., “Actually, Girls Inc. is a nonprofit that indoctrinates girls so they become pro-abortion advocates. Considering its philosophy, one could reasonably predict that many of these ‘strong, smart, and...

A new feature being added to the LTE protocol that smartphones use to communicate with cellular towers will make it possible to bypass those towers altogether. Phones will be able to “talk” directly to other mobile devices and to beacons located in shops and other businesses. Known as LTE Direct, the wireless technology has a range of up to 500 meters, far more than either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. It is included in update to the LTE standard slated for approval this year, and devices capable of LTE Direct could appear as soon as late 2015. LTE Direct has been pioneered...

Universal Music Group artists have a new way to make money from their music videos following a three-way pact between the label, in-video advertising company Mirriad and global ad agency Havas. With the deal, Mirriad will use its digital product placement technology to offer Havas clients, which include LVMH, Dish Network and Coca-Cola, opportunities to advertise inside UMG-family music videos. The companies announced the partnership, a first in the fledgling in-video advertising market, on Monday morning. Mirriad scans existing videos for surfaces, like bare brick walls, empty billboards and plain drinking mugs, and is able integrate branded assets such as...

According to a recent article in Zdnet, Microsoft will monitor users in the new Windows 9 Operating System in order to determine how the new OS is used, thus decide what tweaks and changes are need to be made. During Windows 8 testing, Microsoft said that they had data showing Start Menu usage had dropped, but it seems that the tools they were using at the time weren’t as evolved as the new ‘Asimov’ monitor. The new system is codenamed ‘Asimov’ and will provide a near real-time view of what is happening on users’ machines. Rest assured, the data is...

Thousands of pro-democracy protesters are taking to the streets of Hong Kong ahead of a national holiday on Wednesday, and they're using a messaging app to keep in touch and defy censorship. FireChat is a messaging app built by the San Francisco-based company Open Garden, which creates products facilitating a more open, decentralized internet. What makes the app fascinating is that it doesn't require the internet for local chat, instead allowing people to connect via Bluetooth. When you first download FireChat, the app doesn't let on that it has become a hub for pro-democracy protesters around the world. Instead, the...

We already know quite a bit about Windows 9 (or whatever Microsoft decides to call it). Thanks to the president of Microsoft Indonesia, we might now know another detail about Microsoft’s upcoming OS—its price. According to Indonesian news site Detik.com (via BGR), Andreas Diantoro, the president of Microsoft Indonesia, confirms that Windows 9 will be a free upgrade for all Windows 8 users. Why it matters: Users are becoming more accustomed to free operating system updates, given the fact that even major iOS, Android, and OS X updates are gratis. And after the negative reception Windows 8 received, Microsoft has...
