A 21-year-old Baltimore man has been arrested for attempting to blow up a military recruitment center in Catonsville with a fake bomb supplied by federal agents. Federal authorities say Antonio Martinez, also known as Muhammad Hussain, attempted to detonate what he believed to be a vehicle bomb this morning at the Armed Forces Career Center in the 5400 block of Baltimore National Pike. Court records paint Martinez as obsessed with Jihad and intent on punishing the military. He praised Nidal Hassan, the U.S. Army major who killed 13 people at Fort Hood, and discussed obtaining weapons and shooting up military...

This is breaking news, so unfortunately I do not have a tremendous amount of details. This is what is known: Swedish security police have arrested four terror suspects on suspicion of "preparing a terrorist attack." Today being September 11, fear of terrorism is much greater than on normal days. The four were arrested in Sweden's second largest city Goteborg early Sunday, according to Security police spokesman Stefan Johansson. No further comments were given.

A series of films about how humans have been colonized by the machines they have built. Although we don’t realize it, the way we see everything in the world today is through the eyes of the computers. It claims that computers have failed to liberate us and instead have distorted and simplified our view of the world around us. 1. Love and Power. This is the story of the dream that rose up in the 1990s that computers could create a new kind of stable world. They would bring about a new kind global capitalism free of all risk and...

Hewlett-Packard's PC boss says that it would prefer to spin off its gigantic PC division, creating a "$40bn startup" which would be the world's biggest seller of Windows PCs in its own right. In an announcement on the company's website, Todd Bradley, the head of the Personal Systems Group (PSG) says that doing so would be a return to the startup thinking from which HP grew. "The new organisation would be a $40bn business with the agility and freedom of a startup. That's an exciting prospect," said Bradley. In a separate post , Bradley says that "Our preferred course to...

The computer giant and 3M this week are announcing a collaboration to advance the practice of stacking multiple chips on top of each other, packing much greater computing and data-storage capability together into a small space. Electronics companies now routinely stack a few chips together–particularly memory chips, for use in small devices like cellphones–but IBM is talking about bonding 100 or more chips together, including high-performance microprocessors.

  • Replacing a laptop hard drive, Pt II

Last week I started a thread telling how my Asus laptop HD crashed and I was considering replacing it myself (despite my limited computer skills): http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/2771426/posts?page=21 I'm considering ordering this HD: http://www.techbargains.com/news_displayItem.cfm/267860 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?nm_mc=AFC-TechBargains&cm_mmc=AFC-TechBargains-_-NA-_-NA-_-NA&Item=N82E16822148374 I have a few questions, if anybody can help out: 1. My old HD was 5400 RPM and 8MB cache. This new one is 7200 RPM and 16MB cache. Will it still work in my laptop? 2. It's "bare drive" -- what does that mean? Will I need any extra cables or anything? 3. I found a page online showing how to open an Asus laptop: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/disassemble-asus-k-series-notebook/...

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, and one of the largest manufacturers of computer memory, Samsung, have created a new kind of flash memory that uses graphene—atom-thick sheets of pure carbon—along with silicon to store information. Incorporating graphene could help extend the viability of flash memory technology for years to come, and allow future portable electronics to store far more data. Chipmakers pack increasing amounts of data in the same physical area by miniaturizing the memory cells used to store individual bits. Inside today's flash drives, these cells are nanoscale "floating gate" transistors. Recent years have seen the...
  • Replacing a laptop hard drive?

A few days ago my (Asus) laptop HD crashed. I'm not very cyber-savvy, but I'm thinking about trying to replace it myself. The Hard drive: 500 GB SATA - 5400 rpm. I can get one of these at New Egg for $40. Is it one size fits all? Is replacing a HD a very difficult procedure? I have the Recovery Disks I burned -- can I reinstall Windows with them? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Steve Jobs, co-founder and two-time CEO of Apple, offered his resignation to the company’s board Wednesday. “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, that day has come.” Jobs has been in poor health for some time. In January, he announced that he would be taking a medical leave of absence from the company. He returned to the public spotlight in March to help launch the iPad 2. Jobs advised the board to...

Technology: Servant or Master? David C. Stolinsky June 30, 2011 No, this isn’t a liberal column advocating that we all ride bicycles, use low-flow toilets, and “go green.” Instead, it is a conservative column warning that we must not let technology outpace our ability to control it. People controlled by technology are just as unfree as people controlled by bureaucrats. And if we are not careful, we will wind up being controlled by both. Cars you can’t stop. Perhaps you recall the problems with Toyota and Lexus cars. There were multiple reports of unintended acceleration. Most were attributed...

When the Stuxnet computer worm severely damaged Iran’s nuclear program, many Americans cheered. We should also fear cyberattacks coming at us. The International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., was hacked this past week. The top suspect? China. The week before, the White House. More than 100 senior Obama administration officials found that their private gmail accounts were targeted by China-based hackers, an administration spokesman told The Wall Street Journal. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are investigating. The attacks have been traced to Jinan, home to China’s army cyberunit. The various recent hacking attacks are not isolated events....

In the process, Kim Heung-kwang and Jang Se-yul also warn of the regime's concentrated efforts to bolster its cyberwarfare capabilities. The hackers' professor Kim Heung-kwang was a computer science professor in North...
