  • Vanity: How many of you know someone who is "Crafty"?

My wife and I were discussing how our Farm Store business was doing, (Not all that well). The fleece from our Alpacas and the products that can be made from it are the focus of what we are doing while we build up the numbers of our Herd. The big sellers are ready made items like stuffed toys, Finger puppets and some clothing. But what we are both surprised at is how few, (very, very few), people today do "crafty" things in their spare time. Things like knitting, crocheting, sewing, etc. So that got me to thinking and here I...
  • Cross-stitching software?

    07/11/2012 5:54:23 PM PDT · by Feline_AIDS · 21 replies
Does anyone (or anyone's Mrs.) use cross-stitching software that allows you to upload an image and it produces a pattern for you? I was thinking of getting it for my mother, but don't want to give one that doesn't work well. There's a free service online, but apparently it doesn't work as well as desired. Have any Freepers tried any of them? Are there any that can be bought in a store, or are they all online downloads? Thanks as always.

Create your own designs inspired by the tiles of William de Morgan. Save your finished design in the gallery, print it, and send it to friends. From Wiki: William Frend De Morgan (16 November 1839 – 15 January 1917) was an English potter and tile designer. A life-long friend of William Morris, he designed tiles, stained glass and furniture for Morris & Co. from 1863 to 1872. His tiles are often based on medieval designs or Persian patterns, and he experimented with innovative glazes and firing techniques. Galleons and fish were popular motifs, as were "fantastical" birds and other animals....

On stage Friday at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo, sewing guru Linda MacPhee presented a fashion show of eclectic jackets. As a model twirled at the end of the catwalk, audience member LeeAnne Ulrich stood up from her folding chair, her jacket nearly identical to the model’s. “Oh, look!” MacPhee said into her microphone. “That’s so good – it sends shivers. You must not be able to go anywhere without people wanting to touch you and feel you. Come up here!” After some coaxing, the 54-year-old Ulrich walked up on stage and showed off her creation – a flannel-backed satin...

Sewing is making a huge comeback lately. The reason? What else? The economy! It's cheaper to make your own repairs and alterations than paying someone else to do it. Women of all backgrounds and ages are learning how to sew in order to help stretch their dollar. In a full class of eager women, each is learning the long lost art of sewing. "I am a workaholic," first time sewer Tina Noel said. "I don't cook. I don't clean. I just work." *snip* Noel says altering every season gets expensive. Pant hems cost on average $12, a skirt hem about...

Trent Hamm at thesimpledollar.com writes in his January 3 entry (excerpted) : "For those of you who haven’t heard the news yet, on February 10, 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act comes into effect. One of the major changes that this program will bring into play is a mandate that everything sold for children 12 and younger will have to be tested for lead and phthalates, and anything that isn’t tested (or that fails) will be considered hazardous and cannot be sold. Another way to show your support for John McCain and Sarah Palin. Right-Click on the image, and select "Save Picture As" to download the graphic to your computer. Open the image in your graphics viewer program and print. Next, cut out the black sections with an x-acto knife. Put the resulting template on your pumpkin, and you can trace through the openings with a felt pen to put the pumpkin carving pattern on your pumpkin.

Christmas: Alone & Lonely? Terrorism of the Soul For so many Christmas is a time of fun, happy preparations & warm memories. For so many Christmas is a time of emptiness, regrets & loneliness. For so many Christmas is the saddest, most depressing time of the year. For so many Christmas is a time of seeing the grass greener on the other side. If you are in the negative arena, you DO NOT HAVE TO REMAIN THERE. The underlying circumstances may not change (dumped by spouse/significant other, kids just rather ignore you, other friends are locked up with family,...

We wish you a merry gesso BY DAVE BARRY (This classic DAVE BARRY column was originally published on Dec. 13, 1998.) Ho ho ho! ''Tis the Christmas season, a time of festivity and fun and credit-card statements the length of ``The Brothers Karamazov.'' It's also a time when the publications at supermarket-checkout counters are chock-full of articles featuring creative holiday craft ideas, with headlines like: 'CHER TELLS OPRAH: `CAST OF `FRIENDS' ATE MY BABY!'' No, sorry, wrong type of supermarket-checkout publication. The ones with the holiday craft ideas are the homemaker magazines, which are filled with articles like ''50 Fun...

Oak Lawn woman thanks troops with pillows December 25, 2004 BY JIM HOOK The Finn home in Oak Lawn is filled with pillows. Not your average pillows. These are the slimmed-down airline variety, and they're covered with patriotic cases stitched together with love and admiration for the men and women in the military. Christina Finn and a battalion of volunteers have stitched together more than 500 patriotic pillowcases since June 2004 for soldiers injured in Iraq. More than 400 pillows have been shipped to military hospitals in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Texas, says Finn, an Oak Lawn mother of three...

LANCASTER - A Viking ship and Egyptian antiquities are some of the new attractions at the 14th annual California Poppy Festival, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 16 and 17 at Lancaster City Park. The award-winning festival's theme is "Always Something New." "The goal each year is that we have to do something different, because there has to be a reason for people to come," said Bob Greene, assistant Parks, Recreation and Arts director. Viking fans - those of the Nordic raiders and not the Randy Moss-less football team - may delight in a handmade 27-foot wooden replica of a...
