A pizza-delivery driver was beaten by a man with a baseball bat early Tuesday morning in the former B.W. Cooper housing projects, New Orleans Police said. A Michigan referee of an adult-league soccer match died Tuesday, two days after being punched in the head by a player, authorities said. John Bieniewicz, 44, died at Detroit Receiving Hospital from injuries suffered in what police said was an unprovoked attack. The blow left the victim unconscious and not breathing on the field, Livonia Police Chief Curtis Caid said. After the attack, the player fled the field and waved his middle finger at the crowd. Bieniewicz was in critical condition when he reached the hospital and was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.

A Maryland mother was arrested Monday after she poisoned her young sons with eye drops, police in Pennsylvania said. State police in Gettysburg announced they had arrested 23-year-old Samantha Unger, of Thurmont. She allegedly told state police in Gettysburg that she put drops of Visine into water and juice for her 3-year-old and that her 1-year-old became sick by drinking them accidentally. Unger faces charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children. A police affidavit says both children became sick this spring, and the older boy required hospitalization. He said he was in line to buy water after a run, but investigators say another customer was way out of line when he punched him. 11:30 a.m.: Police have charged an illegal immigrant from Mexico with homicide by vehicle and other charges in connection with a fatal crash Saturday in West Manheim Township, according to a news release. Steven Miller, 64, of Westminster, Maryland, was killed in the crash, according to the York County Coroner's Office.
