A Houston woman who works for the Texas Department of Public Safety used her ready access to state driver's licenses for cash, authorities said. Gracie Gutierrez, 27, remained in custody after she was charged on Tuesday with bribery. Gutierrez is accused of accepting bribes to issue driver's licenses to people who are undocumented and have not taken the written or driving exam, said Donna Hawkins with the Harris County District Attorney's office. An employee of the Fullerton office of the California Department of Motor Vehicles was among four arrested Thursday in a title-washing scheme, department officials said. In a separate license-fraud scheme, five other DMV employees conspired with a middleman to illegally issue drivers licenses, charging $350 to $6,000 to process the applications fraudulently, the DMV said. This weekend I had the unfortunate privilege of hitting up the DMV. All I can say is: MY GOD. It fit every cliché, except that Patti and Selma weren’t there. Sorry for the vanity, but mad as heck and not going to take it. I was with my 16 yo daughter getting a lost driver's permit replaced. She was asked to remove her jacket, which was not touching her face. I objected, pointing out 2 women who went before us in line were not required to remove their hijab, which was touching their face. Maryland's Motor Vehicle Administration says it has halted, at least temporarily, a policy change that would have forced people living as the opposite sex to get an amended birth certificate before applying to change their gender on their driver's license. The vehicle jumped a curb and stopped after plowing two feet into the corner of the building on the south side. What if we did this instead of having this monstrosity DMV everywhere: Starting in 2012, insurance companies would issue your license plates or tags, and your driver's license too. They would pay a fee of $25 for each tag/license to the state and would charge you whatever percentage of the car's value (or whatever rate/amount is voted on by state residents).
