CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has voluntarily recalled specific lots of dry pet food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Chinese government officials overseeing plants that make chicken jerky pet treats blamed for thousands of illnesses and deaths among American dogs have refused to allow U.S. inspectors to collect samples for independent analysis, newly released records show. Investigators with the federal Food and Drug Administration came away empty-handed after conducting April inspections at four jerky treat manufacturing sites in Liaocheng and Jinan, China, according to the records. The plants make pet treats sold by the St. Louis-based Nestle Purina PetCare Co., including the popular Waggin’ Train jerky brands. Chinese officials stipulated that FDA officials could collect samples only if they...

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Fourteen people in at least nine states have been sickened by salmonella after handling tainted dog food from a South Carolina plant that a few years ago produced food contaminated by toxic mold that killed dozens of dogs, federal officials said Friday. At least five people were hospitalized because of the dog food, which was made by Diamond Pet Foods at its plant in Gaston, S.C., the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. No pets were sickened, according to the Meta, Mo.-based company. "People who became ill, the thing that was common among them was...

The 2012 presidential campaign has officially gone to the dogs as the Obama and Romney camps have started sparring over their respective candidates perceived mistreatment of their pups. The issue began when Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney's wife Ann told a family anecdote about how they took a roadtrip to Canada in the 1980s with their dog Seamus in a kennel strapped to the roof of the car. After outcry from animal rights activists, President Barack Obama had his own dog trouble on his hands when a blogger mentioned a line from one of his books that said he once ate...

Given that the electorate is largely pro-dog, Democrats are eager to remind voters this fall about Mitt Romney’s innovative canine transportation methods of the 1980s. . . . But it’s a dog-story-eat-dog-story world. So when the Republicans were reminded by the Daily Caller of a quote from Barack Obama’s own book, “Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance,” a Twitter feeding frenzy ensued. In the passage, Obama is recalling meals he had in Indonesia, where he lived between the ages of 6 and 10: “With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with...

Reports surfaced yesterday that in the past two weeks over 400 new cases of animals being poisoned after eating treats manufactured in China have been received by the FDA, strengthening demands from pet owners that a recall be placed into effect. On Sunday, Senator Sherrod Brown held a news conference on the heels of a previous one the week before at the Ohio Humane Society in Hilliard Ohio about tainted chicken jerky treats from China. It was Brown’s second public statement to the Food and Drug Administration regarding the treats that are reported to have been causing illness and death...

When the White House released its latest plan to stimulate – er, improve – the economy, everybody knew there would be a fresh round of spending to bail out government schools. But there’s another motive too: dues for the teachers unions. By my estimates, about three quarters of unionized teachers are represented by the National Education Association.  Every member pays dues, including $166 per year that goes to the national union, according to a secret union document posted on PublicSchoolSpending.com.  The White House says up to 285,000 teaching jobs – that is, dues payers – could be saved. Given these...

WEDNESDAY, March 30 (HealthDay News) -- Even though most Americans might believe that "senior" dog food is formulated differently than food for young adult dogs and pups, experts say that brands can vary widely in their ingredients and there are no requirements for what goes in foods for older canines. Click here to find out more! A new survey finds that most Americans think that senior dog foods are lower in protein, sodium, fat and calories. "But when we actually looked at the diets, there was an incredible range," said Dr. Lisa M. Freeman, co-author of a paper appearing in...
