A rise in the cost of ingredients has prompted price hikes at fast-food restaurants. The popular double-double at In-N-Out has increased 15 cents since last month. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers went up 10 cents each and drinks increased 5 cents, the chain told NBC Bay Area. French fry prices were unchanged. NASA Tracks "Zombie" Spacecraft from Office Space Inside Old McDonald's "We make every effort to keep our menu prices as low as possible," In-N-Out EVP of Planning and Development Carl Van Fleet said in a statement. • Forget what you’ve been told about dietary fats and heart disease

The American people have been given a lot of bad information about the link between saturated fat, cholesterol, and heart disease. This misinformation is slowly being corrected, and more research is being done in the area, but most medical organizations still recommend low-fat diets as “heart healthy.” We consume a lot less fats, and as a result, a lot more carbohydrates. (An unintended side effect: This diet has been blamed for the large increase in type 2 diabetes in our society over the last few decades.) I predict that in 10 years the medical profession will make yet another dietary...

  • Monsanto Slammed for ‘Fraudulent’ EU Patent on Non-GMO Tomatoes

    06/26/2014 7:00:29 AM PDT · by Renfield · 27 replies
Representatives of the international coalition No Patents on Seeds! from France, Germany and Spain have filed an opposition against a European patent held by Monsanto on conventionally bred tomatoes (EP1812575). The patent claims tomatoes with a natural resistance to a fungal disease called botrytis. The original tomatoes used for this patent came from the international gene bank in Gatersleben, Germany. It was already known that these plants had the desired resistance and they were simply crossed with other tomato plants. Monsanto then produced a cleverly worded patent in order to create the impression that genetic engineering had been used to...

Angry farmers from Fukushima brought a large cow to the centre of Tokyo on Friday to demand Japan's government investigate a disease they say cattle have developed since the nuclear disaster three years ago. Operators of non-profit "Kibo no Bokujo", or "Farm of Hope", delivered a full-size black cow to the front of the agriculture ministry to demand an investigation into why it and many other animals have developed white dots on their skin since reactors went into meltdown

A Nazi-themed cafe in Indonesia that closed shop after sparking international outrage reopened Saturday with its walls still bearing swastikas and a painting of Adolf Hitler. Henry Mulyana voluntarily shut down his SoldatenKaffee last year after media reports exposed his swastika-clad establishment, prompting death threats and accusation of inciting racial hatred. Following the closure, his lawyer told AFP that Henry would later reopen his business with a broader World War II theme and said he would remove all swastikas. But at the opening on Saturday, three huge iron eagles bearing swastikas were on display, as were WWII propaganda posters bearing...

In the 19th century, the French declared the mother sauces. Bechamel, veloute, espagnole, tomate, and hollandaise all became the bases for other sauces in classical French cuisine. Barbecue sauce is sort of the same deal. Key ingredients such as vinegar, tomato and mustard have all come to define regional barbecue in the United States. While sauce on its own is never enough to save bad barbecue, it can perfectly complement the flavors of good barbecue, giving it an identity and elevating it to greatness. So, what are the "mother sauces" of barbecue?

Saudi health authorities have warned the public about eating shawarma during summer, saying it could cause food poisoning. The health ministry said high summer temperatures give rise to bacteria in food prepared outdoors, including shawarma and buffet meals. “Utmost care should be taken when eating such types of food as they could cause poisoning due to the hot weather which causes bacterial growth in the food,” the ministry said on its website, according to Ajel newspaper. It said shawarma and other food sold outdoors are also vulnerable to dust and pollutants during summer more than in other seasons.

Waste coffee grinds could be turned into a sustainable fuel to power vehicles, scientists have found. Oil can be extracted from coffee grounds by soaking them in an organic solvent, before being chemically transformed into biodiesel via a process called 'transesterification', according to researchers from the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies at University of Bath. As part of the study, the researchers made biofuel from ground coffee produced in 20 different geographic regions, including caffeinated and decaffeinated forms, as well as Robusta and Arabica varieties. "Around 8 million tonnes of coffee are produced globally each year and ground waste coffee...

The White House is finally addressing a serious, and misunderstood, problem with a new “bee plan.” The bee plan is a federal strategy to stop the sharp decline of pollinators, most notably bees, and restore pollinator populations to their previous buzzing glory. Can the White House end a problem that has alluded scientists and policy makers for over a decade? The bee plan is focused on habitats… and bureaucracy. The first step of the plan is form a task force. The group will include representatives from 14 major federal departments (click here for the full list).

It may not have occurred to you that when you give your dog a chew treat, you may well be giving the pooch a product that may well be made out of... You may also be unaware that..., as a meat product, has a name that—seemingly mercifully—is not ..., but which is "pizzle," perhaps the only word gross enough for the thing that it describes. But all of this is presumably less gross than the fact that a North Austin supermarket allegedly put pizzle—which is meant to be labeled as inedible beef not fit for human consumption—on the shelves for...
