I have a tech question: how does one make a jpeg picture link viewable as a picture on free republic? Well it is Thanksgiving week. We just finished a disappointing election, Israel is in trouble. The United States is figuring out how to economically survive and I have not had one of these fun vanities in a long time. We used to do them pretty frequently back in the day. Not being able to read and share thoughts during the three presidential debates was painful for me as a longtime FReeper. I really counted on being here with you all, and I did waste an hour for the first two debates attempting to connect. It was frustrating and sad. We were not getting clear responses from Jim either on what was going on. Perhaps no one knew. Despite the disappointments in the election it should be noted that the FreeRepublic forums and servers did very well! A huge THANK YOU is in order for Jim and John who have put in so much time and effort to keep things running!

Just wanted to say, Mega THANKS for whatever you did to fix the servers yesterday. We were all worried about access to FR threads on Election Day, but it looks like you solved the problem. Let's all give them a hand -- and contribute to the Freepathon!

This site has been a frustrating disaster for the last week. What the he'll is going on? I can't get the page to load but 1 of 4 attempts. I'm about to give up, and I've been a member since 1998. Please tell me this will be fixed before Tuesday!!

I just wanted to sign in one last time for a while and wish everybody the best over the next few days. I've had it with the miserable performance of this website for now, so I don't expect to be here much (if at all) before next weekend. Very sorry about the problems with our servers causing FR to get bogged down under peak traffic loads. Praying that John finds a solution or workaround soon. In the meantime, here are some suggestion you can use to possibly make your FR pages load faster: Configure your sidebars to display fewer items. I've temporarily disabled all sidebars but breaking news on mine. Select "Disabled" in the "Region" pulldown for each sidebar block you wish to temporarily disable then click "Modify": http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/manage-blocks Reduce the number of threads and replies downloaded on each click. Why is Free Republic so slow to load, and when it does, it throws me off and I get the "Cannot connect" message from Windows. And it's NOT just during debates. It's happening all the time now. Is it just MY computer? I know HuffPo is down because of the storm, but FR is out of California. In the 12 years I've been here I've never had so much trouble with this site. Until about a month ago.

Given the recent issues the FreeRepublic web site has been having, I thought it would be useful to open a discussion on election night contingency plans. The site was mostly down during the debates, and seems to be having issues keeping up even now. Given that, it seems likely that we're going to have problems on election night. I was gone most of the day running errands, then tonight when I post threads and comments, there are certain words highlighted which, when you rollover the cursor contain an advertisement. Has anyone else noticed this? When did this happen? Just curious...

I am having a hard time with the FR site. It has been this way for a couple days. It's slow, herky jerky and I get a lot of 'document not found' and 'error'. What's going on? I can't do without FR during the election!
