Two bucks each tangled by the antlers in the same nylon rope were pulling against each other until a game warden came up with a clever solution. A Texas game warden came to the rescue of two bucks that were trapped in an unusual way—both deer had their antlers tangled in the same nylon rope and were pulling against each other around the pole of a clothesline in the backyard of someone’s house. The unidentified Texas game warden in Comal County used a clever strategy to free the animals, which were thrashing about with their survival in jeopardy: The Texas...

Down Syndrome Babies—Here to Teach Us Tenderness We snuff out their tiny, prophetic voices at our own peril. They are possibly the last barrier against a society-wide breakdown into generalized violence. FULL POTENTIAL: Emory University’s Down Syndrome Center — Showing what a child with an extra chromosome can do Fr. Mitch Pacwa, speaking to Presentation Parish “On Redemptive Suffering”, remarked that “Down Syndrome babies are here to teach us tenderness”. Societies that protect the most innocent are moving towards greater compassion. But young people in America today know that they may have brothers and sisters who were killed before they were...

President Obama has already seen (at least some of) “Game of Thrones” season four, even though the season doesn’t premiere until April 6. But when you are the president of the United States you get all kinds of good stuff like a mansion and people letting you win at basketball and early access to softcore HBO shows. In the April issue of Vanity Fair, “Game of Thrones” co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss confirmed to writer Jim Windolf that the president gets early screeners of the episodes:

A Massachusetts college sophomore is under arrest for a string of vicious, totally random, “knockout game”-style attacks against three fellow students. Dillon Destefano walked up to three people he didn’t know and sucker-punched them in the face, reports CBS Boston. Police say the incidents occurred in the wee hours of Sunday, Feb. 2 at or near Endicott College, a small private school in a small New England town about 25 miles north of Boston. The victims were walking home. Two of Destefano’s alleged victims suffered major injuries. One student, a freshman baseball player, was hospitalized with a broken jaw and...

DUBLIN — An Italian man allegedly cut open his Dublin landlord's chest and tried to eat his heart following a fight over a chess match. Saverio Bellante, 34, was charged Monday with murder. Police say he admitted his guilt after being arrested Sunday at the home he shared with Tom O'Gorman, a policy researcher for a conservative Catholic think tank in Ireland. Pathologists said the 39-year-old victim suffered dozens of severe knife wounds to his head and chest, which had been cut fully open. Ireland's senior pathologist determined that the heart remained, but a lung was missing.

It was his turn to get knocked out. The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force busted a Brooklyn man for at least seven “knockout” assaults, cops said Friday. Barry Baldwin, 35, punched out the victims between Nov. 9 and Christmas Eve in Canarsie and Midwood, police said. All of the victims were white women and most were Jewish, a law-enforcement source said. At least two of the attacks occurred on the Sabbath.

The NSA document, written in 2008 and titled Exploiting Terrorist Use of Games & Virtual Environments, stressed the risk of leaving games communities under-monitored, describing them as a "target-rich communications network" where intelligence targets could "hide in plain sight". Games, the analyst wrote, "are an opportunity!". According to the briefing notes, so many different US intelligence agents were conducting operations inside games that a "deconfliction" group was required to ensure they weren't spying on, or interfering with, each other. If properly exploited, games could produce vast amounts of intelligence, according to the NSA document. They could be used as a...

True story. A couple of years back, I was walking home at night on North Capitol Street here in Washington, D.C., when two dudes randomly assaulted me before running away without stealing anything. At the time, I didn't think it was all that strange—I've lived in urban areas all my life, and plenty of people I know have been victims of anonymous street crime.

A new pro-gun-control game allows players to reenact last year’s Sandy Hook elementary school massacre. The game, The Slaying of Sandy Hook, has players to carry out a bleak, stylized version of the shooting, which took the lives of 20 children and six adults. Players take on the role of Adam Lanza, the perpetrator, and text boxes prompt them to pick up a Glock pistol, move into the bedroom of Lanza’s mother,Nancy, and shoot her four times, just as Lanza did in real life. They are then directed to pick up an AR-15, ammunition, and Nancy Lanza’s car keys. The game then moves to...
  • ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ review: Stubborn sexism, violence ruin game play

-snip- Yet the majority of the game critic community has decided to treat “Grand Theft Auto V’s” rampant misogyny and violence against women as a pesky housefly, a slight annoyance that doesn’t detract from all that’s remarkably polished. Though some of the defensiveness may be genuine for this ambitiously free-form game, it’s also rooted in the fear of being labeled as one of those clueless souls who doesn’t quite get the joke or, worse, is offended by it. But much of this knee-jerk cheerleading is a lost opportunity. If “Auto V” had advanced as much culturally and emotionally as it...

The release of Rockstar Games’ “Grand Theft Auto V” generated $800 million sales in 24 hours around the world, a record for any game from Take-Two Interactive, and the “GTA” franchise itself. Success of the game bodes well for other tentpole game releases debuting this fall including the next “Call of Duty,” “Assassin’s Creed” and “Battlefield” sequels, as well as “Batman: Arkham Origins” and newcomer “Watch Dogs.” The release of “GTAV” is certainly impressive, especially when compared to film releases. The top three earners at the box office this year are Disney’s “Iron Man 3,” which generated $1.2 billion; Universal’s...

New Orleans: If you've heard it once, you've heard it a million times: The reason why desktop Linux hasn't made it is because of its lack of games. Thanks to Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve and its Steam game platform, that's not true anymore. Linux gaming is ready to rumble and Valve expects it to win. As a keynote speaker at the Linux Foundation's 2013 North American Linuxcon, Newell explained that the old proprietary ways are no longer working for gaming companies. In no small part, that's because the economics of games are changing. Newell said, "Games are becoming nodes...

Some students were shocked Wednesday evening by a YouTube video showing male students at Hunter College pretending to stab and kill fetuses. As 1010 WINS Holli Haerr reported, the YouTube video shows a game called “Abortion Battles,” with people in what is identified as a cafeteria at the public college on the Upper East Side. Male students have balloons under their shirts and take turns trying to pop each other with plastic forks. Some students yell, “Kill that baby! Kill it!”

In the libertarian sci-fi classic, "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress," Robert A. Heinlein describes a successful revolution of the individualistic, free-market-oriented residents of the Moon against the Earth's tyrannical big government. The ins and outs of agitating and organizing the masses to fight the oppressive Authority feel just as realistic as the finer points of everyday life in the underground Lunar cities of the future. The proposed revolutionary scenario could even serve as a workable model for similar real-life endeavors, if only the renowned futurist author hadn't neglected to factor in the immanent function of any oppressive regime: systemic...

I’ve been in touch with Reggie Pierce, the CEO of a company called IP Lasso, which chases down counterfeit web content on behalf of brand-name clients. The National Rifle Association is not a client, but the folks at IP Lasso saw the news splash and decided something felt “a little fishy,” Pierce said. And so they ran some diagnostics. For one thing, nothing in the iTunes listing of the Target Practice app named the National Rifle Association. It just uses the initials –
