A good port or Madeira. A special Sancerre or a Châteauneuf-du-Pape. For the past 15 years, the customers of Wine Ventures in Tenafly have known to count on its proprietor, Craig McManus, for a friendly chat and some wine expertise. What they may not know is that wine is just McManus' day job. By night, he chases spirits. He communicates with the dead. He looks for ghosts. He conjures up the late relatives of people he's just met. He ignores those who call this ridiculous. Instead, he took a phenomenon that initially "freaked me out" and spun it into a...

The Ship of Fire On a certain evening every year, at the mouth of the wide Neuse River, a large bright object speeds into view. It looks like a sailing ship being destroyed by fire, its deck and masts in blazing outline. The apparition disappears, then reappears, then again disappears for another year. It burns furiously but is not consumed. It is the ship of the Palatines. The Palatines were a group of German Protestants who left England in 1710 to settle New Bern. As the vessel crossed the Atlantic, the prosperous Palatines, pretending to be poor, hid their gold...

Ghost hunters say Deering Estate is ground zero for lost spirits A Coconut Grove paranormal team says it has found evidence of ghosts at the Deering Estate. Neither the hot film Paranormal Activity nor TV's popular Ghost Hunters can compete with Miami-Dade's historic Deering Estate at Cutler. Ghost trackers investigating paranormal activity on the site say they recently found more than 60 disembodied voices coming from the county-owned estate -- once the home of wealthy industrialist Charles Deering, of International Harvester fame. One voice captured on a digital recorder seems to say, ``We're trapped here.'' Don't believe it? The Deering...

People who drink too much coffee could start seeing ghosts or hearing strange voices, UK research has suggested. People who drank more than seven cups of instant coffee a day were three times more likely to hallucinate than those who took just one, a study found. A Durham University team questioned 200 students about their caffeine intake, the journal Personality and Individual Differences reported. However, academics say the findings do not prove a "causal link". They also stress that experiencing hallucinations is not a definite sign of mental illness and that about 3% of people regularly hear voices. "This is...

Some even believe the White House is haunted, with many former residents and staffers saying they've seen the ghosts of President Abraham Lincoln and former first ladies Abigail Adams and Dolley...

Authors Jennifer Westwood and Jacqueline Simpson have sifted through centuries of myths, legends and local tales to compile a county-by-county guide to England's ghosts. Visitors stand in the Aldrich Cemetery in Hartland, Vt., Monday, April 21, 2008. A land buyer's proposal to move three graves from the old family cemetery has caused outcry from historians, veterans and neighbors. (AP Photo/Toby Talbot) HARTLAND, Vt. - The 130-acre property was exactly what Michel Guite and his family wanted: an old Vermont farm with mountain views, rolling hills and meadows. There was, however, one wrinkle: The property included a small family cemetery — with the grave of a War of 1812 veteran — surrounded by a fence on a scenic knoll. His proposal to move the graveyard...

Romanian cops have closed a vandalism investigation that left local houses in ruins by concluding ghosts were to blame. LONDON (Reuters) - British officials paid a psychic to exorcise a suspected poltergeist from state housing after the distressed occupants said they would rather become homeless than stay, a council said on Tuesday. Easington Council in County Durham said the family could not be persuaded to stay in the house, and that through paying half the psychic ghosthunter's 120-pound ($234) fee they were saving money as otherwise they would have had to pay for emergency housing. The Fallon family told reporters they heard banging from the loft, saw items fly across rooms and had doors slammed in their faces. They...

Council pays psychic for exorcism A psychic was paid £60 by a council to rid a County Durham home of a "poltergeist" after a family became "distraught" by unexplained events. Easington Council employed the ghostbuster after a Peterlee tenant reported paranormal activity. The mother-of-two had even called police after seeing objects flying across rooms and hearing banging. A council spokesman said it funded half the psychic's fee as it was the most cost effective solution. Andrew Burnip, the council's homelessness and housing advice manager, said the tenant's two young children had been "traumatised" by the strange goings on and wanted...

"THEY SAID this day would never come," Barack Obama declared in Iowa last week, and the ghosts of this nation nodded. With an African-American competing seriously for the presidency of the United States, the last act of a centuries-old drama begins. Obama's blood tie to the story of American slavery, ironically, comes through his white mother's ancestry, which apparently includes both slave owners and those who fought for the Union to end slavery. That Obama's father was a Kenyan links him more directly than anyone could have imagined both to Africa's past as an exploited continent, and to its present,...

The ghosts that haunt on Halloween are usually put outside with the pumpkins: white sheets with stuffed heads draped across the trees. But real ghosts haunt Passaic County, some residents say. In a house in Little Falls, a baby giggles from inside the walls. In Wayne, a widow looks out the window over her husband's grave, though both have been dead since the 19th century. In Paterson, a murdered man moved in with a family until it was "his time to go." A third of Americans believe in ghosts, according to a recent Associated Press-Ipsos poll. And 23 percent of...

Ghouls, Ghosts and Goblins It seems like such harmless fun—children dressed as witches, skeletons or Darth Vader ringing the doorbell, enthusiastically announcing, "Trick or treat!" But is this preoccupation with the dead, witches and demons really harmless? Customs surrounding the holiday range from neighborhood haunted...

The following story was told to me by the woman who rented my parents their first home in California when they moved to Sacramento in 1939. A devout Catholic (although she had been divorced by her husband, she did not consider the divorce valid and did not remarry until her husband died many years later) the landlady swore on her Bible, in front of my sister and me after she told us the story, that it was absolutely true. She was quite serious about it. In the 1970s, I personally confirmed some of the more mundane parts of her story....

Horror stories may be the place for vampires, ghosts and zombies. Just remember, they are not real, warns physicist Costas Efthimiou. Obviously, you might say. But Efthimiou, a professor at the University of Central Florida, points to surveys that show American gullibility for the supernatural. Using science and math, Efthimiou explains why it is that ghosts cannot walk among us while also gliding through walls, like Patrick Swayze in the movie "Ghost." That violates Newton's law of action and reaction. If ghosts walk, their feet apply force to the floor, but if they go through walls they are without substance,...

Like ghosts themselves, the best ghost stories never seem to go away. But there's no better time than Halloween to share tales of fright and things that go bump in the night. The Tricky Topic of Halloween By Kenneth Richard Samples In terms of holiday commercial sales, Halloween ranks second only to Christmas. But is this extremely popular tradition (especially in the U.S.) the devil’s night, a literal satanic and occult extravaganza? Or is Halloween a harmless celebration? Many Christians raise questions and express concerns about holidays that have some historical connection, at least in terms of dates, to ancient pagan beliefs and practices. Some refuse to allow their children to participate in Halloween celebrations. Others would like to abolish the event. Addressing common questions about this scary holiday may alleviate some...

Halloween is the most dangerous day of the year -- when satanists and witches snatch children off the streets and sacrifice them in Satan's name!Halloween is nothing but a secular time of fun and games -- an excuse for the kids to dress up and overload on sugar! These are only two of the comments Christians hear during October. There are many things about celebrating Halloween with which Christians are uncomfortable, such as images of ghosts, devils, and witches; and rumors of satanic rituals involving criminal and anti-Christian activities. However, most adults also have fond memories of childhood trick-or-treating and dressing...

Terrifying Haunting or Clever Hoax? Was Mompesson's ghost a genuine spirit? In 1662 English landowner John Mompesson began telling the world that his household was haunted by an evil and mischievous spirit. In a letter to William Creed, Regius professor of Divinity at Oxford and a relation by marriage, he said that he had initially thought that the disturbances were the work of burglars, before being forced to conclude that they could only be supernatural. He blamed the visitations on the witchcraft of William Drury, a drummer he had caused to be arrested in March for claiming money under false...
