Until the mass murder at Fort Hood intervened, I’d intended to write about Thursday’s bingo night to benefit the Girl Scouts. It was a cold and stormy night. Almost all of the summer visitors are gone. We thought there’d be sparse attendance at the monthly charity bingo game put on by the Rotary Club. But the place was packed, wall to wall. Dozens of Brownies and Girl Scouts in uniform were scurrying about, serving the players. Final figures weren’t available on the spot. From prior experience, however, I’m sure more than $1,000 was raised for the Scouts. How ordinary is...

Twin Falls, Idaho » The headquarters for 620 Girls Scouts in south-central Idaho is moving because too many registered sex offenders live near its current downtown office, officials said. "Do we feel this is the safest environment for girls being served in the area?" asked Shelli Rambo Robertson, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council, which includes Idaho, Oregon and Nevada. "We did not." The group last month discontinued meetings at the southern Idaho office and is moving to a new office near the College of Southern Idaho. The headquarters on Fourth Avenue was in an industrial part...

SNIPPET: "For all his public activity, Bray has rarely, if ever, discussed his life story in detail. His own MAS biography offers vague descriptions of his work as "a long time civil and human rights advocate." A charismatic African-American convert to Islam, Bray spent this entire decade working for Islamist organizations. Prior to joining MAS, Bray was political director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC). Those jobs have helped him build a growing public profile and given him access to politicians and policy makers. And that may explain his reluctance to discuss his life before political activism. The Investigative...

Obama's youth recruitment continues unabated with last week's co-announcement by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Girls Scouts CEO Kathy Cloninger of a new "Preparedness" patch for Girl Scouts. Yep, the Girl Scouts are the latest DHS/Obama recruits..As Yahoo Daily News reports in an article entitled "US Girl Scouts prepare for war, pestilence," The move is part of a month-long government effort to make Americans better able to cope with natural and man-made disasters. The Doug Powers blog astutely comments, “Man-made disaster” is of course Hopenchange speak for “terrorist attack.” No doubt the Girl Scouts will also be taught that...

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States wants to enlist its 3.4 million Girl Scouts in the effort to combat hurricanes, pandemics, terror attacks and other disasters. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched a campaign Tuesday to entice the blue, brown and green-clad multitudes to be even more prepared, with the promise of a new patch if they pitch in. The young scouts will be able to emblazon their sashes or vests with the patch if they undergo the training which readies them for an emergency. "This new preparedness patch will increase citizen preparedness and enhance our country's readiness for...

FORT HUACHUCA — One of the first things a group of post Brownies did with a solar oven was bake brownies. Members of Brownie Troop 2181 have decided their community service project will involve solar ovens. The girls’ goal is to buy five of the ovens for needy families. “We want to help people who don’t have a lot,” 6-year-old troop member K.J. Engasser said. The recently formed troop is working with Baja Arizona Sustainable Agriculture, a nonprofit education organization in Sierra Vista that promotes sustainable food production and sustainable methods of cooking, such as solar ovens That the Brownies...

MAS' Esam Omeish Seeks Virginia Office Campaign Mum on MAS Ties, Radical Omeish Speeches IPT News May 1, 2009 The last time the public got a good look at Esam Omeish, he was resigning from a Virginia immigration panel, claiming that the posting of videos showing him praising Palestinians who chose "the jihad way" to liberate their land was part of a smear campaign against him. Now Omeish is diving into the deep end of smear campaigns, offering himself as a candidate for a partisan legislative seat in Northern Virginia. Omeish is among four Democrats vying to win their party's...

When many parents think of Girl Scouts, they imagine young girls in uniform selling Thin Mints and Tagalong cookies – not learning about stone labyrinths, world peace, global warming, yoga, avatars, smudging incense, Zen gardens and feminist, communist and lesbian role models. But that's exactly what many of 2.7 million Girl Scouts will learn about with a new curriculum called "Journeys" released last year.

Just as is the case with the newspaper industry, it seems as though the organization behind the Girl Scouts hasn't fully grasped how to integrate the Web into its business model. After one enterprising scout tried promoting her cookie sale online, the Girl Scouts of America got wise and stopped the little operation because it was against its rules. Little Wild Freeborn, 8, of Asheville, NC, wanted to sell 12,000 boxes of the cookies so that she and her troop could get a free trip to Scout summer camp. After doing the door-to-door bit, Wild posted a YouTube video to...

Two 10-year-old girls were left in hysterics after a masked man brazenly stole nearly $800 in cookie sale proceeds from a local Girl Scout troop at Fred Meyer on Sunday night. "It's pretty pathetic that someone would steal money from two kids," said Caroline Hassler, the Troop 32 co-leader that witnessed the cookie caper. "I don't know what to say about that. It kind of speaks for itself." The girls were just about finished with their four-hour shift of selling the cookies when a man in a ski mask and goggles allegedly nabbed a cash box around 5:50 p.m. and...

She is bright-eyed, pig-tailed and resplendent in Girl Scout green and a multitude of merit badges. Wild Freeborn -- adorable and age 8 -- has caused considerable hubbub with entrepreneurial spirit and a little homemade video. "Help me help others. Buy cookies. They're yummy," little Wild says in her one-minute sales pitch for Thin Mints, Samoas and other traditional mainstays of Girl Scout cookie cuisine. The modest message included an online order form, was videotaped by her father, Bryan Freeborn, in the family living room in Brevard, N.C., and posted at YouTube.com But not for long. • Click here for...

Two Girl Scouts and their troop leader were robbed as they sold cookies outside a San Antonio store, reports say. The 9-year-old girls were packing up after hours of selling cookies outside a Walgreens in the city's North Side on Wednesday night when a man approached and stole their money, about $250, WOAI.com reports. No injuries were reported. "Both little girls are scared," the troop leader, who did not want to be identified, told WOAI.com. "And they've learned, firsthand, there are bad people out there."

(News 4 WOAI) Two little girls and their troop leader were robbed outside a North Side store Wednesday night. The Brownie troop leader became emotional as she told News 4 WOAI how she witnessed the thief steal from the two 3rd graders. "They didn't take it from me. They took it from my girls," the troop leader said. The 9-year-olds had set up and sold their cookies at the Walgreens in the Medical Center several times before, and everything had been fine. But Wednesday night, a man stole all of their hard-earned money. "We were finishing up our shift and...

Valley Girl Scouts by: Malcolm A. Kline, January 16, 2009 As the season approaches when we load up on Thin Mints, we might want to ask ourselves what happened to the group that sells them. Where Girl Scouts of yore were taught to be prepared, parents of today’s troopers may ask themselves “For what?” Christina Hoff Sommers, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, has shown in her book, One Nation Under Therapy, how the Girl Scouts have morphed into a touchy-feely organization. “The Girl Scouts now give out stressless badges which they can earn by focused breathing, exchanging...

Beginning Jan. 16, Girl Scouts of the Moccasin Bend Council will be practicing Spanish as they ask customers to purchase the Dulce de Leche (DOOL-seh deh LEH-chay) cookies which means "candy of milk." Inspired by the classic confections of Latin America, the all-new Dulce de Leche cookies are rich with milk caramel chips and stripes and have a hint of cinnamon. This latest Girl Scout cookie adds an international flair to this year's Girl Scout Cookie Season. This new cookie also gives Girl Scouts a unique opportunity to celebrate Latin-American cultures and learn a little "Cookie Spanish" at the same...

From its very beginnings nearly 100 years ago, the motivating force in Girl Scouting has been a spiritual one. Girl Scouts promise to serve God and country and "to help people at all times." With that in mind, it was probably only a matter of time before Girl Scouts discovered the message of Divine Mercy as revealed to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska in the 1930s, a call for spiritual renewal through trust in God This autumn, a Girl Scout troop in Texas pinned and sewed the portraiture of Jesus, The Divine Mercy, on their sashes and vests, earning scouting's first-ever...

Michelle Walsh wanted to teach her 2nd-grade Girl Scout troop about the presidential election. What the Naperville mother got was a lesson about the rough-and-tumble world of political finances. Walsh said she called both campaigns and asked for free trinkets she could give the 7-year-olds to help them learn. If they did well, she explained, each Scout would earn her "Ms. President" patch. The tchotchkes would provide added incentive. A representative for John McCain responded immediately, sending Walsh a box filled with stickers and signs. Is the Obama campaign really this cash-strapped? We know his supposedly legendary fundraising operation is hurting. Heck, if the New York Times is willing to admit it’s hit a rough patch things must really be bad, but is it so tight that he can’t spare a few bucks worth of stickers and signs for some little girls? Michelle Walsh is a Girl Scout leader in the Chicago suburb of Naperville. Her 2nd grade girls work hard at selling cookies and building crafts. But Walsh sometimes tries to go a step further. She wants to teach the girls about civics, specifically...

DETROIT -- Jennifer Sharpe is one sharp cookie, especially when it comes to selling Girl Scout Cookies. The 15-year-old from Dearborn, Mich., sold more than 17,000 boxes of cookies. Jennifer was on a street corner with her mom every day selling Thin Mints, Do-Si-Dos and the rest of the cookie line. Pam Sharpe, Jennifer's mother and troop leader, said the sales effort helped build her daughter's confidence. FORT HUACHUCA — While deployed in Kuwait, Spc. Herbert Brown remembers how much he and his comrades appreciated the little things from home. So when boxes of Girl Scout cookies were shipped to his unit, the men and women were completely moved by the gesture of good will. “It’s really hard to express how much this means to the soldiers,” Brown said, recalling what it was like to be on the receiving end of the cookies. “I was in Kuwait in ‘05-’06, and it meant a lot that people I didn’t even know were thinking about me.” For the past...

Greetings members of the sisterhood. Well, it's that time of the year again. Girl Scout cookie time. A time when our little sisters in bondage are forced by their patriarchal masters to spend rainy Saturday mornings in front of supermarkets, post offices and department stores, peddling over-priced cookies on rickety tables, in order that they raise monies to support the organization that helps enslave them and prepare them for a lifetime of subjugation, submissiveness and slavery. Yes, my fellow sisters, I'm talking about the Girl Scouts of America. An organization formed by our evil paternalistic forefathers to ensure that...

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -- The State Attorney's Office will decide whether to charge two teens who admit they robbed a 9-year-old Girl Scout selling cookies outside of a Boynton Beach supermarket. Authorities said that a 17-year-old girl in a hot-pink sweatshirt approached Smith outside of a Winn-Dixie supermarket at Hypoluxo and Jog roads in Boynton Beach Wednesday evening and asked the girl what her favorite cookies were. Police told WPBF that, while Smith was telling the...

Camp Scott: Once a wilderness utopia where children played, it's fifty-year history came crashing to a sudden end with the ghastly murders of three Girl Scouts in 1977. Scouting survives: Even in high-tech age, youths learn to 'Be prepared'http://www.herald-mail.com/?module=displaystory&story_id=144116 Sunday August 6, 2006 by CANDICE BOSELY candiceb@herald-mail.com TRI-STATE - These are a few of their favorite things: Cell phones and cookies, iPods and pop-up tents, video games and wilderness badges. Seeing teenagers - and children even younger - talking or sending text messages on cell phones, fiddling with mp3 music players and playing video games are common sights. Girl Scouting and Boy Scouting might almost seem passé, given the associated images of camping, surviving in the wilderness and sleeping in wooden cabins at camp. But it's not antiquated...

Rabies shots urged for 950 Girl Scouts Associated Press LEESBURG, Va. - Officials are recommending that nearly 1,000 Girl Scouts who may have been exposed to rabies at a Northern Virginia camp consider getting protective vaccinations. There is only a small chance that any of the girls were infected by bats that were found in some of the sleeping shelters at Camp Potomac Woods, Loudoun County officials said. It's an American tradition as homespun as Thanksgiving Day turkey and Fourth of July fireworks. But how much you pay for a box of Girl Scout cookies can depend on where your Girl Scout lives. Every winter, eager Girl Scouts set up their cookie-laden booths in front of supermarkets, and the selling begins. For the scouts, selling the cookies is a chance to learn valuable business skills, while making money for...

California may refuse to provide subsidies to the Boy Scouts of America and other nonprofit groups that fail to comply with government antidiscrimination policies, the California Supreme Court ruled unanimously Thursday. The state high court's decision gives cities and government agencies the ability to impose antidiscrimination conditions on any group that receives a public benefit. The ruling was one of a handful across the country in which courts have permitted government agencies to exclude the Boy Scouts from programs because the Scouts bar gays and atheists. In a ruling written by Justice Kathryn Mickle Werdegar, the court upheld a decision...
