An American missile ship set to dock at Haifa Port on Monday is equipped with an anti-missile defense system that could be deployed in the region in the event of an Iranian missile attack against Israel. The USS San Jacinto is an AEGIS cruiser in the Ticonderoga Class and was commissioned in 1988. It carries the most advanced underwater surveillance system available today and is equipped with the AEGIS missile defense system, which was developed by Lockheed Martin to protect against aircraft and missiles. The ship will remain in Haifa for three days. While the IDF developed and operates the...

Did prehistoric man come from Haifa?Last update - 23:34 06/09/2007 By Fadi Eyadat The audience, the stage and the set are ready. Only the guest of honor is missing - "and everyone is waiting for him," says Prof. Mina Evron, a researcher in the Archaeology Department of the University of Haifa and the codirector of excavations at Misliya Cave, southwest of Mt. Carmel. The 'guest' that she and a team of researchers are seeking in the cave area is a skeleton that could represent early humans. "We have found everything here: large quantities of the tools they used, hand-held stone...

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi and U.S. troops chased militants in and out of alleys and conducted house-to-house searches Wednesday in a central Baghdad neighborhood, a day after fierce fighting that killed 50 insurgents. An Iraqi army officer said 15 suspects had been arrested in Baghdad's troubled Haifa Street section. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns. U.S. and Iraqi forces spent the day Wednesday in a mopping up operation, trying to ensure that insurgent forces were cleared from the dangerous neighborhood. The Haifa Street region has come under attack by Americans several times in the war, only...

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) - Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah on Wednesday warned all Israeli Arabs to leave the port city of Haifa so the militant group could step up attacks without fear of shedding the blood of fellow Muslims. Haifa, Israel's third-largest city, has been the frequent target of Hezbollah's rocket attacks. "I have a special message to the Arabs of Haifa, to your martyrs and to your wounded. I call on you to leave this city. I hope you do this. ... Please leave so we don't shed your blood, which is our blood," Nasrallah said. The Shiite cleric...

Dear Everybody, Yesterday was a terrible day for Israel. Losing 12 soldiers to one katyusha attack is a national tragedy for this country. For the U.S., our loss of 2,500+ soldiers is hardly noted except as a statistic. It’s not even allowable to photograph the coffins coming home. Our soldiers die almost anonymously. The average American didn’t know any of the dead, and Americans’ lives are not essentially changed by the Iraq war. But Israel is more like one big neighborhood than a country. School kids go all through school together (no constant moving around like in the U.S.), and...

I'm watching the TV pictures from Haifa and the people are speaking Arabic. Hezbollah have hit an Arab neighbourhood and I'm seeing religious Jews and Arabs, side by side, digging people out and saving lives. The TV news (Sky and Fox at least) don't know that this is an Arab building. I don't care, they are people and they are Israelis. Hezbollah are just as happy to directly kill Muslims in Israel as they are to ensure that Muslims in Lebanon are killed. Either way they are happy. I don't have the language to describe these people. Pray for a...

Witness: Victims did not take shelter after siren; at least 5 rockets hit Haifa residential areas Three people were killed and some 40 others were wounded in Haifa on Sunday evening in what was described as the heaviest rocket strike on Israel's third city since the attacks began on July 12. The strikes came several hours after 12 Israel Defense Forces reservist soldiers were killed and 12 others were wounded, four of them seriously, in a direct hit on an open area in the northern community of Kfar Giladi, as Hezbollah renewed its rocket fire against Israel with an enormous...

Hezbollah rockets kill 12 in Israel By JOSEPH PANOSSIAN, Associated Press Writer 13 minutes ago BEIRUT, Lebanon - Hezbollah guerrillas unleashed their deadliest barrage of rockets yet into northern Israel, killing at least 12 people...as fighting only intensified despite a draft U.N. cease-fire resolution. Hezbollah and its allies rejected the draft resolution, saying its terms for a halt in fighting do not address Lebanon's demands — in a signal that the nearly 4-week-old battle will burn on. Hezbollah fired a barrage of rockets late Sunday on the port city of Haifa, injuring dozens of people, in the heaviest attack on...

Hezbollah Iran Missiles Slam Hadera Israel - Nuclear War Approaching? By Joel Leyden Israel News Agency Tel Aviv----August 5......The only good thing about the terror group Hezbollah (Hizbollah) or Islam Party of God is that they keep their promises. Just two days ago Hezbollah terror leader Hassan Nasrallah said from Lebanon that he would strike Tel Aviv, Israel with missiles if the Israel Defense Forces attacked parts of central Beirut. A few hours ago, Hezbollah launched three Iran missiles at the Israel city of Hadera. Hadera is 70 miles south from the Lebanese border and 30 miles north from Tel...

Received 8/1/06 Dear Everyone, Sixty rockets hit within one hour this morning, about 300 since dawn, and it’s only lunchtime. No deaths, but a lot of casualties. For every person who is physically injured, many more suffer shock and are taken to the hospital for treatment. Mental health services are also being made as available as possible by the Israeli government. War is very noisy. That’s probably the worst part of the war for people huddled in bomb shelters. Walking to work today, I could hear the boom, boom, booming of rockets to the north. Spin. I subscribe to Time...

Dear Everyone, You know the day has begun when the siren sounds at 5:30 a.m. Not so bad. Gives me even more time for morning prayer and reflection, which is vital for starting the day. The process of adjusting to war is very interesting. I find that sirens are now sort of “normal”, and I mostly ignore them. At work I just keep on working. BEIRUT (Reuters) - Israeli warplanes battered Lebanon on Tuesday, killing 31 people, and more Hizbollah rockets hit northern Israel, killing one, with no sign that diplomacy would halt the week-old conflict any time soon. Civilians on both sides were angry about the bombardment that has cost 235 lives in Lebanon and 13 in Israel, but Israeli and Hizbollah leaders showed no willingness to halt the fighting or heed proposals for a new U.N.-backed stabilisation force. Iranian Fajr Missiles Used in Haifa Attack 20:05 Jul 16, '06 / 20 Tammuz 5766 (IsraelNN.com) The rockets which caused death and destruction in Haifa on Sunday morning contained parts made in Syria, according to security officials. They were, however, Iranian-made 220 mm Fajr missiles, with a range of 40 kilometers, security sources said. In a statement read on al-Manar TV, Hizbullah’s television station, the terrorist organization said it had fired “a salvo of Raad-2 and Raad-3 rockets.” The terror organization added that it would target petrochemical plants in Haifa if the IDF continued air strikes in Beirut.

The IDF has stationed three Patriot anti-ballistic missile batteries in Haifa Saturday, aimed at intercepting missiles launched at the area. Two of the batteries were deployed Saturday morning, and the third one was placed in the area in the afternoon. Patriot missiles were stationed across the country for the last time in 2003 during the Iraq War. The American-made Patriot batteries are part of Israel’s antiaircraft defense system. The Patriot system, which was initially designed to serve as an air defense platform, later assumed the role of an anti-ballistic system. The Patriot is still in use in Israel, and the...

Two rockets fired from Lebanon hit central Haifa; Katyusha rockets hit Nahariya, Safed and Carmiel By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service Two rockets slammed into the northern port city of Haifa on Thursday evening. The rockets hit the Stella Maris area near French Carmel. There were no reported casualties. Hezbollah denied firing the rockets at Haifa Thursday evening, after a day in which a woman in Nahariya was killed and another 120 people were wounded when scores of Katyusha rockets fired by Hezbollah guerillas rained down across northern Israel. Following the attack on Haifa, the IDF Home Front...

Hezbollah guerillas threatened today to attack the major Israeli port city of Haifa and its surroundings with rockets if Israel strikes the Lebanese capital Beirut and its southern suburbs. Such a strike would be the deepest ever into Israel by Hezbollah guerillas, who fired volleys of rockets against towns of northern Israel during the past day. It was not clear if Hezbollah rockets have the range to hit Haifa, located about 30 kilometres south of the border. The Israeli army said several Hezbollah rockets overnight had landed more than 20 kilometres south of the border, showing that Hezbollah has managed...

Belmont Club History and history in the making Thursday, December 23, 2004 Haifa Street The execution of Iraqi election workers on Baghdad's Haifa street was probably not, properly speaking, a murder. It was a political act. There has been no suggestion that the killers of the electoral workers had any personal grudge against them. Probably any electoral workers would have done. While most killers seek to hide their faces and plan their attacks so no one can see them, these killers scorned masks and chose a busy street in Baghdad to carry out their work because they wanted to...

The Israel Air Force on Sunday positioned a battery of Patriot anti-aircraft missiles in the Haifa Bay area, in order to intercept any Hezbollah-operated drones launched from Lebanon. The decision to place the battery was reached after a Hezbollah drone invaded Israeli airspace over the town of Nahariya last month. The Iranian-made drone managed to fly in Israeli skies for about 15 minutes, undetected by the IDF's anti aircraft forces. At first, IDF officials interpreted the incident as a Hezbollah muscle flex. Later, however, the IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon said that such a drone could theoretically carry 50...

Translation from English to Hebrew by me The bag that was thrown out of the Palestinian taxi in Schem (or "Nablus") with an explosive belt was destined for a suicide terrorist attack of the Tanzim in Haifa. During IDF troop operations in Schem, due to terrorist attack warnings, soldiers observed a suspicious Palestinian taxi north of the Jewish community of Migdalim. The force told its passengers to stop, but they started to drive away with the car and threw behind them a bag suspected of being explosive-laden. Border Police bomb-squad units took care of the bag.

In what could signal a change of policy, a US warship from the Sixth Fleet held a quiet call at the port of Haifa this week. The USS Thorn, a 7,800-ton destroyer, departed Thursday, reportedly after a three-day stay. Its 300 crew members were not allowed to disembark for shore leave to the disappointment of Haifa's businesses. Israeli officials said this was for security reasons. Despite the low-profile visit, it does mark the first time that a large US naval ship has called at an Israeli port since late 2000. The US Navy's removing of Haifa Bay as a port...
