A man could get cynical. A recent non-story of national interest involved one Doug Wead, a friend of President George W. Bush. Wead, an author, motivational speaker and former assistant to the first President Bush, created a bit of a stir when he released a dozen audiotapes in which he secretly taped conversations with George W. Bush from 1998 until mid-2000, as Bush sought and won the Republican nomination. News readers and commentators jumped on the Wead tapes as if they were the missing 18 minutes from the Nixon Oval Office tapes, but a listen to the tapes could put...

The lies never stop. They lie not only to you and me, but also to their friends and colleagues, Republicans as well as Democrats. I speak (as you might guess) of those masters of deceit in the Bush administration. A few months ago they told our senators and representatives that their bogus Medicare prescription drug bill would cost $400 billion over the next 10 years. Now that the bill has become law, they've revised their estimate: Now it's $724 billion. Two questions: Why is the difference in estimates important, and why do I call the drug bill "bogus"? Today let us take the sad, sordid case of one George W. Bush. Our president. Love him or hate him, it was he and he alone who decided that our mighty armies should travel to Iraq and kill tens of thousands of people, . . .

<p>The Great Divider was at it again last week, rallying his religious fundamentalist troops in their never-ending war against the principles of freedom.</p> <p>George W. Bush is a man who wears his religion on his sleeve. "Look at me," his actions seem to say. "Look at what a good boy I am. I love God, I truly do, I love the flag, I love apple pie, and, lately, I've noticed I love marriage."</p>

<p>The Political Party that Stands for Nothing came close to being embarrassed last week when it needed help from San Francisco Republicans to win a run-off election for mayor.</p> <p>As it turned out, the Democrats didn't act embarrassed. They should have -- and would have, if they had any principles -- but modern Democrats stand for only one thing: winning.</p>

<p>Eat your heart out, Ronald Reagan! George W. Bush has made you look like a rank amateur. His Thanksgiving Day publicity stunt in Baghdad was the stuff of true genius.</p> <p>Take a back seat, Mr. Great Communicator. "Win one for the Gipper" just doesn't cut it any more. This is the new millennium. Bush rules!</p>

<p>"The world will little note nor long remember what we say here," he said at Gettysburg, "but it can never forget what they did here."</p> <p>I contend the reverse is true. We remember Lincoln's famous speech, but we've forgotten the battle that inspired it. We know more of the words than of the deeds.</p>
