Former Rep. Heather Wilson will announce Monday that she is running for New Mexico’s open Senate seat, a GOP source confirmed to Roll Call. Wilson told Roll Call in early January that she was considering running for the seat. At the time, she had just finished chairing incoming GOP Gov. Susana Martinez’s transition team. Reached by phone on Friday, Wilson said she has no further comment at this time. The announcement will come nearly three weeks after Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D) announced he would not seek a sixth term next year. His exit gives New Mexico just its third open...

Heather Stilwell, the former chair of the Surrey School Board who led a contentious fight to ban books on same-sex couples, has died of breast cancer. She was 66. A fierce anti-abortionist, and supporter of Christian family values, Stilwell served on the Surrey School Board for 15 years. She was co-founder of the Christian Heritage Party, whose platform was to make abortion and possession of pornography illegal. As chair of the Surrey School Board in the late 1990s, she led the charge to ban three books in schools on same-sex couples. The case ended up in the Supreme Court of...

San Francisco Police Chief Heather Fong's decision to retire after nearly five stable but uninspired years on the job, comes just as Mayor Gavin Newsom is facing two tough political challenges with the city's powerful police officers union: budget cuts and the need for the union's backing for his 2010 gubernatorial bid. Faced with a staggering city budget deficit, Newsom has asked the Police Officers Association to give back the 6 percent raise he agreed to in the last contract - just as he is asking other unions for givebacks. So far, the police rank and file have said no...

Dear FReepers, In October 2007, my dear friend Heather was diagnosed with cancer, a large sarcoma in her leg. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation, had that tumor removed in January of this year. At that time, her doctors were fairly optimistic regarding her prognosis, but the cancer metastasized to her lungs. She had surgery to remove the tumors in her lungs in August, and was recovering well until last month. I previously posted a prayer thread about Heather here. The cancer is back again, this time on her spine, in her abdomen, and again in her lungs. It is inoperable....

Dear FReepers, Please pray for my dear friend Heather. She has a rare cancer, and is having surgery in the morning to remove the tumor. Heather was diagnosed in October with stage three leiomyosarcoma, which is an agressive cancer of the smooth muscle. She has undergone radiation and chemotherapy over the last few months in an attempt to shrink the tumor, which is located in hip near her sciatic nerve. Her most recent MRI indicates that the tumor has indeed shrunk, but there is still the possibility that her surgeon may not be able to remove the whole tumor or...

Heather Mills is trying to prove Sir Paul McCartney is worth much more than the £400million he claimed in their divorce battle. She has told friends she is employing a team of forensic accountants to examine her former husband's finances. Such information, she hopes, will lead to the divorce ruling being overturned and see more money go to their daughter Beatrice, four. In her impromptu press conference after the divorce hearing at the High Court, Miss Mills said: "We all know he's worth £800million. He's been worth £800million for the last 15 years." The Sunday Times Rich List put the...

LONDON (AP) - Heather Mills McCartney broke her silence Wednesday about her divorce from Paul McCartney, saying in TV interviews that she fears for her life because of death threats and blaming tabloids for her problems. Mills McCartney appeared on an ITV television morning show to complain about media coverage and to announce that she would seek European legislation to compel newspapers to apologize for untruthful stories. She also urged the public to stop buying sensationalist newspapers. "We've had death threats, I've been close to suicide. I'm so upset about this," Mills McCartney said on the ITV show. "I've had...

In a classic example of misleading by omission, OpinionJournal.com editor James Taranto’s bio states, "He attended California State University, Northridge." In a commentary about Marilee Jones, who had lied to her bosses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology about her educational credentials for 28 years, Taranto belatedly fills in the blanks: I left high school after my sophomore year; and although I spent several years in college, I never bothered to graduate. Noting that "[b]y all accounts Marilee Jones did an excellent job," Taranto brushes aside the central issue in her dismissal - "[o]stensibly Ms. Jones was forced out because she...

Heather Mills’ thus-far successful stint on ABC’s “Dancing with Stars” has convinced one former Heather-hater that “America should apologize” for making Paul McCartney’s estranged wife the villain in their bitter divorce battle. “I’m ashamed that I had a judgment against her based on everything that you read in the newspapers,” a caller identified as “Pat” told Ryan Seacrest who had the ex-Mrs. Beatle on his West Coast radio show yesterday. The caller continued to say he’d “love to apologize to her” for how the former model and animal activist “was wrongfully treated,” moving Mills to tears, People maggie reported.

ALBUQUERQUE -- Heather Wilson raised a toast of orange juice with her husband and children, confident that re-election was secure after a 36-hour delay. The incumbent Republican declared victory late Thursday in her bid for a fifth term in the U.S. House. Wilson holds a razor-thin lead over Democrat Patricia Madrid in one of New Mexico's most caustic campaigns ever. ''My children expected to be celebrating with orange juice on Wednesday morning. It's taken a while, but I'm glad they're here with me to celebrate. Josh and Cait, we won,'' she told her 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter. Democrats refused...

She was the Democrats' best hope against U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, their No. 1 star in an election season scarred by scandal and war. And Attorney General Patricia Madrid still might be. But we probably won't know for sure until the end of the week. Or next week. After the congressional candidates spent a long evening playing cat-and-mouse in their vote tallies, they went into the morning hours with Wilson holding a 1,303-vote lead. But their fate is bound up in two sets of uncounted ballots totaling more than 5,000 votes. One group consists of more than 2,000 ballots rejected...

Republican Rep. Heather Wilson and Democratic challenger Patricia Madrid brought out some political and local star power Sunday during their separate high-energy, high-decibel political rallies. Wilson's northeast Albuquerque event highlighted her support among some Hispanics and members of the opposing political party, featuring former Rep. Manuel Lujan Jr. and New Mexico musical legend Al Hurricane, who happens to be a Democrat. "She's super bright," said Lujan, who from 1969-1989 held the 1st District seat now held by Wilson. "I served there for 20 years, so I watch her very closely— and I think she does the right thing." At a...

A funny thing happened over the weekend to the big "Cops Gone Wild" video scandal in San Francisco -- it started getting very quiet. Apparently, Mayor Gavin Newsom and his handlers realized that while the videos were bad, they didn't quite prove -- at least in the public's mind -- Newsom's charge that they were evidence of a "deep-seated" culture of sexism, racism and homophobia running through the department. By Sunday, the message was going out that Newsom -- having made his point and formed a "blue-ribbon" commission to look into the department's culture -- was now ready to get...

Although no one defended the law, the Bar Board of Governors has said three sections cannot lobby to repeal a state law banning homosexuals from adopting because it is too divisive among Bar members. The board voted 31-13 at its December 10 meeting in Naples to accept the recommendation of the Legislative Committee and deny the request of the Family Law, Equal Opportunities Law, and Public Interest Law sections to seek to change the law. The three sections wanted to substitute a best-interest-of-the-child standard for the gay adoption ban. The board devoted almost two hours of debate to the issue....

Two Fathers, With One Happy to Stay at Home By GINIA BELLAFANTE INNEAPOLIS — Right before Christmas, Jamie McConnell arrived at the Lake Country School here, as he does most days of the week, to pick up his son, Ben, 3. Hardly short on spunk, Ben made his way out to the snowy playground, and Mr. McConnell, as parents have done since the dawn of swings and monkey bars, trailed behind. Mr. McConnell had plenty of time to watch Ben romp and to invite one of his classmates and his mother home for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. For years,...
