Slight background. Dems in IA always vote much higher absentee compared to GOP. This has gone on for several elections now. GOP always makes up for it on election day at least in 2004 not 2008/2012. Off topic but FL, for some reason, this pattern is reversed. So here on the first day of absentee ballot requests of 2016 compared to the first day of absentee ballot requests in 2012: 9/17/12: D-92,850; R-13,635; I-28,091 9/20/16: D-43,443; R-15,272; I-16,360

The downloadable version for Iowa’s “Where do the Senate Candidates Stand on Life?” is available here. The candidates have very different views on abortion. Here is an overview of their positions on abortion-related issues. Abortion on Demand Chuck Grassley is pro-life. He opposes abortion on demand, and supports protection for unborn children. Chuck Grassley co-sponsored and voted to advance the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36), legislation to protect unborn children who can feel pain by prohibiting abortion at 20 weeks, a point...

The Obama administration shocked the oil industry last week, pulling the plug on a major oil pipeline from the Bakken that had become a flashpoint between a pipeline company on the one hand, and a growing coalition of Native American tribes and environmentalists on the other. Everyone was anxiously waiting a Friday ruling from a U.S. federal judge, who was weighing a request from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to stop construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline, a $3.8 billion 1,168-mile oil pipeline that would run from North Dakota to Iowa and Illinois. A handful of swing states—experts always mention at least five, and no more than eleven—will determine the winner of the presidential race, mainly concentrated in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Southwest. In key swing states, Republican registrations and party-switching has outpaced Democrats, raising questions about enthusiasm and turnout models: Trump’s poll numbers remain dire, but he can point to at least one ray of hope for a turnaround: Republicans have continued gaining ground in recent months in voter registration in Florida,...

Are Clinton's claims justified? How "clean" is wind power? Can it be made available nationwide? What is the cost? This series of five posts explains that wind power is not as "clean" as you might think, is systemically less efficient, produces far more expensive electricity and is likely to do so for a long time, and can not survive without taxpayer subsidies. Support for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump ticked up across battleground states following the Republican National Convention last week, according to the new CBS News Battleground Tracker Poll. Trump now has 42 percent support across the 11 battleground states surveyed — up from the 40 percent he had last week before the convention. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has 41 percent support, unchanged from last week's poll. According to the poll, 55 percent of Republicans said Trump's message at the convention made them feel hopeful, and about 40 percent said it made them feel enthusiastic. Among independents, 32 percent...
  • Rep. Steve King Defends Confederate Flag On Desk: Slavery Just 'Small Part' Of Civil War

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, landed in some hot water this week after he gave an interview to a local TV station in his Sioux City district office and viewers noticed that he kept a Confederate flag on his desk. (SNIP) And we’ve lived with respecting the South and their way of life for 150 years and now, after 150 years, there has to be an issue about a Confederate flag?” King told Angelo that he had ancestors who had fought and died in the Union Army. “Our family cares a lot about unity but also about the truth and accuracy...

Once you get over the fact that according to the pollsters Donald Trump loses in just about every category except head to head, in some polls it becomes instructive to look deeper at the over and under representation of various important groups within the surveyed sample. A new Monmouth poll makes this point. It says Trump is leading Hillary Clinton by 2 points in Iowa, a state that has not voted Republican since 1988. This is very good news for Trump and very bad news for Clinton. And although it is presented as “no big deal,” it not only is...

Other GOP elected officials may be avoiding the Republican National Convention later this month, but Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst sees an opening night speech as an opportunity “to give Iowans a voice on the national stage.” “Right now, Iowans are pretty darned frustrated — just like when I ran for election,” said Ernst, whose 2014 campaign caught fire with a “Make ’em Squeal” promise to cut federal spending. National security is to be her focus when she addresses the Cleveland convention on Monday, July 18. “There’s a real pushback against the failed policies we have right now,” Ernst said Tuesday....

West Long Branch, NJ - Donald Trump holds a nominal 2 point lead over Hillary Clinton in the battle for Iowa's electoral votes, according to the Monmouth University Poll. In the race for U.S. Senate, incumbent Chuck Grassley has a 10 point lead over Democratic challenger Patty Judge. This is a far cry from the 30+ point margins Grassley enjoyed in prior re-election bids, as more Iowa voters disapprove than approve of his decision not to hold hearings on Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee. Among Iowa voters likely to participate in November's presidential election, 44% currently support Trump and 42%...

Earlier this week, CoachingSearch looked at the longest-tenured assistants in FBS. Now, here’s a look at the tenure of every FBS head coach. Illustrating the amount of turnover in the profession, 108 of the 129 FBS head coaches have been hired since 2010, and 88 have been hired in the past four years. That means more than 2/3 of all head coaches have been hired since 2013.Some veteran coaches who left the list this offseason included Frank Beamer (1987), Gary Pinkel (2001), George O’Leary (2004), and Steve Spurrier (2005).First, the longest tenured coach in each conference:AAC: Ken Niumatalolo (Navy) -...

In the aftermath of the mass shooting of a dozen police officers in Dallas this week, some conservatives rushed to lay blame for the incident at the feet of the Obama administration. Former Republican congressman Joe Walsh said on Twitter that "Obama's words & [Black Lives Matter]'s deeds have gotten cops killed." Rep. Roger Williams (R-Tex.) said, "the spread of misinformation and constant instigation by prominent leaders, including our president" contributed to the killings. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said the shooting had "roots" in the "anti-white/cop events illuminated by Obama." These statements are part of a broader narrative of a...

It seems tougher by the hour for Planned Parenthood to rationalize its long-held motto, “Care. No Matter What.” That steep task just got harder this week, amid revelations that a shuttered Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Iowa broke client confidentiality by leaving behind personal health information (PHI) records for over 2,500 of its former clients. In early May, a Dubuque office affiliated with Planned Parenthood of the Heartland completed the sale of its property to Clarity Clinic, a local pregnancy help organization, and left behind a closet full of patient files that took Planned Parenthood staff 10 days to come...

Congregations across the state of Iowa are in grave danger of having their pastors silenced in the pulpit over LGBT public accommodation rules, according to a federal lawsuit filed against the Iowa Civil Rights Commission. Fort Des Moines Church of Christ filed what is known as a “pre-enforcement challenge” – arguing that a portion of the Iowa Civil Rights Act, is a threat to First Amendment freedoms. Alliance Defending Freedom, a legal firm that specializes in religious liberty lawsuits, is representing the church in its fight against the commission. “Churches should be free to teach their religious beliefs and operate...
