A VICTORIAN man who deliberately ran down emus in his ute on a country road near the South Australian border has said his actions were the “biggest stuff up” of his life. Jacob MacDonald, 20, was charged with numerous animal cruelty and traffic offences on Friday after the video he filmed of himself running over the emus went viral on social media. MacDonald, pictured, is from Cowangie, a small town only kilometres from the South Australian border. The thought of Karl Marx, a German political agitator whose theory of “scientific socialism” wreaked havoc on the world for most of the 20th century, would seem to have been consigned to the ash heap of history following the fall of the Eastern Bloc communist regimes from 1989 to 1991. After decades of mass murder claiming tens of millions of victims, as well as the totalitarian oppression of hundreds of millions more, the reputation of Marxism had been destroyed almost completely, seemingly assuring its final demise. However, a resurgence of interest in Marx’s thought has been ongoing since 2008, when the...

The starfish feeds on native coral that call the reef home -- and they are key to the reef's ecology. No coral, no reef and so the starfish must be destroyed. In 2015, researchers at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) unveiled the technology known as the Crown-Of-Thorns Starfish robot (COTSbot) to deal with the threat. When deployed, the autonomous robot was able to seek out crown-of-thorns starfish (with 99 percent accuracy) and inject them with a chemical cocktail that causes them to break out in nasty blisters and eventually die. Now, that same research team has unveiled RangerBot, the...

The two drivers, both male, then drove farther north on the freeway, stopped near Del Paso Road, exited their vehicles and began to fight, Zerfas said. One of the drivers was killed in the fight after suffering what appears to be blunt force trauma. Then the second driver, walking north on the freeway, was struck and killed by a passing motorist.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The genealogy website used to find the man accused of being California's Golden State Killer had no idea its database was tapped in pursuit of a suspect who eluded law enforcement for four decades, the site co-founder said Friday. Authorities never approached Florida-based GEDmatch about the case, and Curtis Rogers said law enforcement's use of the site raised privacy concerns that were echoed by civil liberties groups. The free genealogy website, which pools DNA profiles that people upload and share publicly to find relatives, said it has always informed users its database can be used for...

Christopher Thomas slaughtered the innocents in an East New York apartment on a rainy Palm Sunday — the blood-soaked culmination of a beef with the home’s owner, convicted cocaine dealer Enrique Bermudez. Thomas, now 68, was released nearly three months ago and is believed to be living in Queens. “He doesn’t deserve to be on the street . . . He killed...

An illegal immigrant began his murder trial for the 2014 killings of two Northern California sheriff's deputies on Tuesday with a profanity-laced rant, calling a partner of one of the slain officers a “coward.” Prosecutor Rod Norgaard recounted the events that led to the death of Sacramento Sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver outside a Sacramento motel in October 2014, and described how Oliver's partner, Deputy Scott Brown, was able to retreat from the heavy gunfire. Luis Enrique Monroy Bracamontes, 37, the alleged killer, interrupted the court when he grinned and called Brown a "coward." Bracamontes was scolded by the Sacramento Superior...
