A group of Senate Democrats is urging the Obama administration to allow at least 65,000 Syrian refugees to settle inside the United States. While the United States is the largest donor of humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees, we must also dramatically increase the number of Syrian refugees that we accept for resettlement, the group of 14 lawmakers led by Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said Thursday. The group letter noted the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) wants to resettle 130,000 Syrian refugees over the next two years and has thus...

The number of students graduating with STEM degrees already far exceeds the number of STEM jobs available but powerful interests in the business community are pushing Congress to allow more foreign skilled workers into the country. Congress is considering new immigration laws that would flood the U.S. with guest workers from the Middle East and Asia, a plan some are calling an open invitation for jihadists to walk right through Americas front door. Critics say lawmakers including top Republican leaders are playing with fire and could jeopardize national security with the proposals to double or even triple...

Last Friday, I wrote about how the Democrats were putting abortion before helping victims of human trafficking. The Democrats incredible defense was that they had not read the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act to find the language inserted by the GOP relating to abortion. Now, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), a Democrat from Minnesota and the bills leading Democratic sponsor, admits that it was her staff, not the Republicans, who should be blamed for the scuttling of the bill. Per the Daily Caller; Klobuchar admitted Tuesday one of her staffers did see the language weeks ago. The staffer had seen...

MINNEAPOLIS Two former employees of the Minneapolis VA Medical Center allege they were pressured to falsify patient appointment dates and medical records to hide delays, a television station reported. In a report that aired Wednesday night, the ex-employees told KARE-TV that in some cases, they were told to falsify medical records by writing that patients had declined follow-up treatments when, in reality, they say the veterans had never been contacted. The former VA workers fear that patients' lives may be at risk because they say some cases involved suspected colon cancer. "Some of them were getting missed altogether," said...

It has now been two months since the Obamacare rollout began, and what do Minnesotans have to show for it? And more importantly, what are Sen. Franken, Sen. Klobuchar and Gov. Dayton doing to fix these cascading problems? Already more than 5 million Americans are losing their existing health care plans, including low-income college students; 140,000 of the 5 million people nationwide receiving cancellation letters are from right here in Minnesota. So far, we have only heard about the millions of individual policies that have been canceled, but it is estimated that somewhere between 50 million to 100 million people...

Kurt Bills' campaign released an online ad Monday, July 30, that mimics nearly shot for shot the landmark 1990 campaign ad entitled "Fast Paced Paul." That offbeat ad introduced Wellstone, then a virtually unknown college professor, to Minnesota voters. Initially seen as a sure loser, Wellstone upset incumbent Republican Rudy Boschwitz that year. Bills -- a high school economics teacher also largely unknown to state voters -- is encouraging a comparison as he challenges the popular and well-funded Democratic incumbent Amy Klobuchar. The version from Bills, "Quick Kurt," can only be viewed online.

Democratic defections and a united Republican front are hampering President Obamas message on the economy. Last week and again Thursday night, there were a couple Democratic defections on Obamas jobs measure. And despite a veto threat from the White House, 10 Democrats voted for a GOP alternative. The lack of a united front is complicating a key part of Obamas reelection strategy of running against Washington, and Congress in particular. Obama has been lambasting the politics of Capitol Hill, and some say a few stray Democratic votes will prevent that message from resonating with voters in 2012. Others claim that...

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty on Wednesday definitively ruled out a 2012 campaign for the U.S. Senate after ending his Republican bid for the White House a few days ago. Some Republicans, including state GOP chairman Tony Sutton, were hoping Pawlenty would get right back into the ring and take on freshman Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar next year. Record labels are clamoring for a chance to have their artist lip-synch alongside 16-year-old YouTube sensation Keenan Cahill in, of all places, his bedroom. But could a proposed amendment to the federal copyright infringement law potentially land Cahill, or any person lip-synching copyrighted material in a YouTube video, behind bars? Senate Bill 978, a bipartisan measure introduced last month by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Sen. While visiting relatives I attended the 4th ff July parade in Crosby, MN. I found it rather encouraging that the same crowd which stood and offered their respect when the flag and veterans passed by was less than enthused when Amy Klobuchar followed shortly thereafter. Even with her sycophants marching alongside and attempting to encourage "spontaneous" applause (i.e. they would start clapping approximately every one block) her reception was less than "warm"... I know, Rats lying in this debate is fish in a barrel, but I thought this one especially egregious. Amy Klobuchar is one of the dimmer bulbs in the Senate. She claimed yesterday to Chris Wallace in response to a question about the broad unpopularity of this bill, that Medicare was even MORE unpopular when it was passed, with only 28% supporting it. This struck me as pretty far fetched, given the lopsided vote for it. Sure enough, she had the numbers exactly transposed. Stupidity or mendacity? You decide.

Wednesday night, the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce held its 139th annual dinner meeting, with nearly 1,100 people in attendance at the DECC. Although Klobuchar did not specifically criticize Bachmann's statements, she said today that she wanted "to get countervailing views about the census and privacy issues." Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, was sworn in this afternoon, holding his left hand on a leather-bound volume of a Qur'an that was once owned by Thomas Jefferson. In a day of firsts, Ellison was sworn in by Nancy Pelosi of California, the first woman House speaker. Ellison held his right hand in the air, placed his left hand on two brown leather-bound volumes of the Qur'an, which were held aloft by his wife, Kim. The historic moment was played out in wood-paneled chamber of the Capitol before hundreds of journalists from around the world, including Al...

MINNEAPOLIS - Democrat Amy Klobuchar holds a commanding lead in the U.S. Senate race over Republican Mark Kennedy in a Humphrey Institute poll released Thursday night, the second poll released this week that gave Klobuchar a double-digit lead. But Klobuchar's lead of 52 percent to 36 percent for Kennedy was not quite as big as her 24 percentage point lead in a Star Tribune Minnesota Poll published Monday. Both polls were conducted before a flap surfaced Tuesday over her firing of a campaign spokeswoman who accessed an unreleased TV ad for Kennedy, a case that opened up a new avenue...
  • Klobuchar's Stumble: What will the Fallout Be in Minnesota Senate Race?

Amy Klobuchar made the first serious misstep of her Senate campaign over the last few days, when her spokeswoman, and perhaps other staffers, viewed an unreleased Mark Kennedy ad that they got from a blogger who apparently hacked into Kennedy's consultant's web site, and Klobuchar waited four days to disclose the incident. Many will wonder how the episode is likely to affect the Senate race. The real significance of the incident lies, I think, in the fact that in order for Kennedy to win, voters must perceive the race as something other than a generic Democrat/Republican matchup. If voters don't...
