April 28: Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has signed the the nation's first Knife Preemption Law, advanced by Knife Rights. The bill, SB1153, was passed by bipartisan votes of 36-19 in the Arizona House and 19-9 in the Arizona Senate. It will take effect 90 days after the legislature adjourns, expected this week, and not only prevents political subdivisions from enacting new ordinances and rules, but voids all existing restrictive knife ordinances. A disabled caravanner who kept a penknife in his glove compartment to use on picnics has blasted the authorities after being dragged through court for possessing an offensive weapon. Rodney Knowles, 61, walks with the aid of a stick and had used the Swiss Army knife to cut up fruit on picnics with his wife. Knowles yesterday admitted possessing an offensive weapon at Torquay Magistrates Court. He was given a conditional discharge. But speaking after the hearing, he said: 'It's a stupid law. (Kyodo) Prosecutors sought Friday the death sentence for a man accused of a stabbing spree in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, that left two people dead and seven others wounded.
