Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts could have a tough time getting through his primary this year, a new poll suggests. The veteran Republican Senator is facing a primary challenge from Milton Wolf, a doctor and a cousin of President Barack Obama. Wolf is running to Roberts’ right, and has the backing of outside conservative groups, including the Senate Conservatives Fund. A poll out Friday from Democratic pollster Public Policy Polling found that while Kansans were still largely unfamiliar with Wolf, there was a fair amount of dissatisfaction with Roberts on which he could capitalize if he can raise his profile. Roberts...

A Kansas radiologist running for Senate posted grisly X-rays of patients who had been shot on his Facebook page and engaged in joking online banter about the images.Milton Wolf, challenging Sen. Pat Roberts in a Republican primary, acknowledged Sunday that he posted “insensitive” comments online, which he described as “mistakes.”He was responding to a devastating story in the Topeka Capital-Journal, which reported that he wrote that a patient could not complain about the awkward way his head was positioned for an X-ray, published on Facebook, because he was dead. He said a man decapitated by gunfire resembled an alien in...

Questions about whether Sen. Pat Roberts (R) is really in Kansas anymore have made him the most vulnerable he’s ever been in his decades-long career. The development has given his primary challenger, radiologist Milton Wolf, new ammunition in his long-shot bid. And the revelations have even unearthed a years-old rumor that Roberts could be swapped for a stronger candidate — potentially Lt Gov. Jeff Colyer — at the last minute, if the seat looks like it may be open to a Democratic takeover because of his vulnerability in the primary. A New York Times report earlier this month revealed that...

A bill passed by the Kansas House of Representatives that could legalize discrimination against gay couples seems unlikely to pass in the state Senate, according to Kansas lawmakers. On Wednesday, the Kansas House voted 72-49 to approve HB 2453, which offers legal protection to individuals and businesses that refuse service for same-sex couples, specifically those looking to get married. Under the bill’s language, individuals, businesses and government employees would be immune from legal reprisal for refusing service if they have “sincerely held religious beliefs” opposing customers’ marriages. Though the bill is described as protecting religious freedom, LGBT organizations see it...

WICHITA, Kan. - Preparations are underway at Wichita's Hyatt Regency to welcome hundreds of Kansas Republicans this weekend. When they show up at the door they'll see the familiar sign forbidding firearms, but they can ignore it if they have a concealed carry permit. Kansas GOP chairman Kelly Arnold says that was part of the deal that brought the state convention to this hotel. "The Second Amendment is a fundamental right that we have, and it's part of our Republican Party platform," Arnold says. "I know my committee and my convention goers are going to want to be able to...

The Senate Conservatives Fund has endorsed tea party candidate Dr. Milton Wolf in the race for Sen. Pat Robert's (R-KS) Senate seat. "Dr. Milton Wolf is a principled conservative who will fight to stop the massive spending, bailouts, and debt that are bankrupting our country," Senate Conservatives Fund Executive Director Matt Hoskins said in a statement obtained by TPM on Tuesday. Wolf, a radiologist and tea party favorite, is actually President Barack Obama's second cousin. He jumped into the race for Roberts's seat in October. "He's not a career politician. He's a doctor who understands exactly why Obamacare must be...

Wolf, an admirer of conservative Republican Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, had sharp words for the GOP and its contribution to the federal debt. “The Republican Party has this mindset that you should get in line and that you should bow to whoever is in charge and you should ask their permission and you should go along to get along,” he said. ”But where has that got us? I can give you 17 trillion reasons why that has been a failure, and it’s our party that did that.” Wolf has steadily been building his public profile with appearances on...

A distant cousin of President Obama is mulling a primary challenge to Kansas Republican senator Pat Roberts for 2014. Milton Wolf, a radiologist in the Sunflower State, is the president’s second cousin once removed. Wolf is a prominent tea-party activist in the state and nationally who has made several media appearances, such as on Fox News as well as penning columns in the Washington Times. Last month, he sent an e-mail to Republican activists in the state asking if they wanted more senators in the mold of Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, according to Politico. He also criticized Roberts’s record...
