John Parsons Wheeler 3d, a Vietnam veteran officer who served in three GOP Presidential administrations, and who chaired the committee that raised funds from businesses, agencies and prominent Americans to get the Vietnam Veterans Memorial built on the Washington Mall, was found dead in a landfill a few miles from his New Castle Delaware home this weekend.

A man who fought to get the Vietnam Veterans Memorial built and served in two Bush administrations was murdered, Delaware police say. John P. Wheeler III, 66, was found dead in a Delaware landfill, and his death has been ruled a homicide by Newark, Del., police. They are asking the public for leads in the case. EL PASO, Texas -- U.S. Marshals confirmed to ABC-7 Friday afternoon that a body found in a Sunland Park, N.M. landfill was that of a federal inmate who escaped the El Paso jail earlier in the day. Carlos Roberto Medina-Bailon, 30, of Delicias, Mexico, is believed to have escaped the El Paso County Detention Facility between 4:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Friday by using the garbage disposal system.

The ashes of executed Crips gang co-founder Stanley "Tookie" Williams were spread in a lake in South Africa in accordance with his will, a friend said. A Kennewick woman was pulled alive from a northern California landfill after she reportedly was carjacked and kidnapped while driving to work. Rebecca Huston, 32, was last heard from last Wednesday evening. Friends and family began searching for her after she failed to show up for work at a veterinary clinic in Richland. Michigan - It looks like a body that was lost in a Michigan landfill will remain there. Trash haulers mistakenly took the body Friday morning from a storage area at a funeral home in nearby Holland, Michigan. They picked up the body while they were collecting medical waste. Search teams sifted through tons of trash in the landfill for two days, but found nothing. The 66-year-old Holland man's children told crews to stop looking for the body, citing the risk of health and safety for the searchers. Environmental officials have agreed to honor the family's request.

OLD TOWN - Vandals on Sunday evening caused an estimated $10,000-plus in damage at the West Old Town Landfill, police said. <p>RUMFORD, Maine (AP) People in western Maine are upset that hundreds of American flags were dumped in a landfill instead of being burned and buried in a ceremony honoring the victims of the terrorist attacks.</p> <p>Organizers with civic groups in Rumford collected thousands of flags for a public ceremony Sept. 7 to honor the victims of the attacks. One flag was burned at the ceremony, and the rest were supposed to be burned at a pit adjacent to the transfer station in Mexico.</p>

<p>With no alternative to deal with O'ahu's increasing volume of garbage, the state Department of Health approved a permit yesterday to raise the height of the landfill at Waimanalo Gulch by 30 feet.</p> <p>The action came with only weeks of capacity remaining at the city's sole landfill, and state deputy health director Gary Gill noted that the urgency to find a solution to O'ahu's waste problem was mounting along with the trash.</p>
