Traditional Latin Mass filmed on Easter Sunday in 1941 at Our Lady of Sorrows church in Chicago. The film presents the ceremonies of the Missa Solemnis or Solemn High Mass in full detail with narration by then-Mgr. Fulton J. Sheen. Celebrated by Rev. J. R. Keane of the Order of Servites (hence the white habits and cowls), the ceremonies are accompanied by a full polyphonic choir, orchestra, and fifty Gregorian Chanters. The attention to detail in the ceremonies is impressive. Notice, for example, how the servers and ministers always take great care to move in order. Notice too that the...

The Rising of the Roses: A Reflection on How the Lord is Restoring His ChurchBy: Msgr. Charles Pope It is often a fact that we have had to discuss difficult subjects on this blog. For, it is also a fact that our culture is in serious trouble.  But it is also a notable trend that God is renewing his Church. I am seeing increasing signs of a springtime for the Church, at least here in America. As I walk past the rose bushes out front of the rectory I see the first red shoots emerging from the pruned stumps. Last...

From Robert Moynihan's most recent "Inside the Vatican" newsflash:Will the Vatican soon issue a document calling for some restrictions on the use of the old rite of the Mass? The internet, especially in traditional Catholic circles, is abuzz with reports that this may be about to happen. But for the moment, these reports are based only on rumors. Officially, no one yet knows the content of the upcoming Vatican Instruction to give guidelines for the implementation of Summorum Pontificum -- the dramatic and controversial July 7, 2007 papal motu proprio in which Benedict XVI, after long hesitation, granted wider use of the old,...

Jack Schmidt converted to Catholicism about a decade ago and never learned Latin. But that's the language he prefers for Mass.... Andrew Davis does know Latin and struggles in English to describe how much the traditional Latin Mass means to him. "The liturgy is so beautiful and inspiring," the Corinth college student said. "It's something that really raises my heart and mind to God." For Schmidt, Davis and a few hundred other North Texas Catholics, this is a big day. Mater Dei Catholic Church, local home of the traditional Latin Mass, will be in its own sanctuary for the first...

Chile [Kreuz.net] Bishop Juan Ignacio González (54) of San Bernardo in Chile has celebrated of late the Mass in the Old Rite. This was according to 'fortes-fide.blogspot.com'. The reason for the Mass was the three year Jubilee of the Motu Proprio 'Summorum Pontificum'. Click [href= http://www.kreuz.net/photo.697.html]here[/url] for photos of the beautiful Mass.

More than twenty groups in Germany have requested an old Mass and receive from their old liberal Bishops not even one word. Actually, the Motu Proprio paves the way.[Kreuz.net]The locations, where the old rite is usually celebrated, have increased 480 % since the Motu Proprio 'Summorum Pontificum'. This is according to the director of the German Lay Society 'Pro Missa Tridentina', Monika Rheinschmitt. In June 2007 there were in total 35 locations, where the Old Mass was regularly said in the German speaking areas. Three years after, on the beginning of July 2010, there were 203 Mass locations.

A mass in Washington DC, celebrating five years since Benedict XVI became the pope, had to be changed at the last minute when it was discovered that the priest who was originally due to give the mass, was involved in the church's sex-abuse scandal. Cardinal Dario Castrillon of Colombia, who was once on the shortlist for pope, sent a letter to a French bishop congratulating him for not reporting a priest who raped and abused a dozen boys. Al Jazeera's Monica Villamizar reports from Washington.

A reader sent me a link to a reaction from a priest of the Archdiocese of Seattle to the Pontifical Mass in Washington DC for the anniversary of the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI. The writer in question is one… well… here is his blurb from his blog: Jan Larson, a senior priest of the Archdiocese of Seattle, was ordained in 1968. He received a M.A. in liturgical studies from the University of Notre Dame, and a D.Min. in pastoral liturgy from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. He has served as director of the Archbishop’s Office of Worship...

For the first time in 40 years, the old Latin Mass will be celebrated in the largest Catholic Church in America, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. I just received noticed that His Excellency Edward Slattery of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has stepped up and will be the celebrant for the Pontifical Mass at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC on Saturday 24 April. This is to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the pontificate of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Card. Castrillon was originally scheduled. As you may recall, Bp. Slattery has done some good things in Tulsa. Not only has he welcomed the Benedictine monks form Fontgombault at Clear Creek, but he has written well on matters liturgical for his Diocese of Tulsa. The Traditional Latin Mass planned for April 24th honoring Pope Benedict on his five-year anniversary was scheduled to have Cardinal Dario Castrillon-Hoyos as the celebrant. Not any more. As you probably know, a significant controversy has erupted over a letter sent by the Cardinal expressing gratitude to a Bishop for not turning over a sexually offending priest to civil authorities. The hue and cry that has erupted from this revelation is significant. As a result, the Cardinal is out as the celebrant at the planned Traditional Latin Mass for the 24th of April. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In consultation with His...

Advocates for victims of clergy abuse are protesting a decision by a local Catholic group to bring a controversial former Vatican official to Washington this weekend to celebrate a Latin Mass at one of the country's most important Catholic churches. Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos is scheduled to lead a first-of its-kind "solemn Pontifical Mass" on Saturday at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Northeast Washington. Castrillon, who served as head of the Vatican's Congregation of the Clergy, made international headlines when a 2001 letter he wrote to a French bishop surfaced last week.... In response,...

This past Sunday I made my way through South Philadelphia to attend a Traditional High Solemn Latin Mass at St. Paul’s Catholic Church at 10th and Christian Streets. The last TLM I attended was sometime between my 11th and 12th birthday. I’d grown up with the TLM so its passing then was not a pleasant time for me. While I was captivated then by the Second Vatican Council, I didn’t want the Council to do anything to the Mass, so when the changes began—it took about a year for the liturgical reformatting to take effect—I’d brace myself whenever I went...

Sitting atop a hill in Denton, Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary is visible for miles around. Passers-by sometimes confuse it with a hotel. But in this sprawling complex of multicolored brick and glass live 72 men studying to become priests of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite -- priests who perform the traditional Latin Mass. Wednesday, the Catholic Church marks the completion of the $14 million seminary with the consecration of its newly finished Chapel of Saints Peter & Paul. It is the first U.S. chapel built for seminarians in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in 40...

Latin Mass at the National Shrine in April First such Mass at the shrine in nearly 45 years If you haven't yet settled on a way to mark the fifth anniversary of the pontificate Benedict XVI, and if you're in the Washington, D.C., area, you may want to check this out. A renewed push by students for the reintroduction of regular celebrations of the Tridentine Mass, or a traditional Mass conducted in Latin, will provide the Georgetown community with a new option for Roman Catholic worship on campus. Starting Feb. 11, the traditional Latin Mass will be offered one weekday per week every other week. This will be the first time that this Mass has been offered on campus since May 2008. The main advocate for the pre-Vatican II Mass (Mass said entirely in Latin]) Kieran Raval (COL ’13) describes the Latin Mass as a way to feel a greater connection...
  • Vatican Confirms Freedom of Priests to Celebrate Extraordinary Form– No Need For 'Stable Group'

Good news from Rome: the Vatican has further underlined the freedom of priests to celebrate Mass in the Extraordinary Form whenever they choose. Two important points have been clarified by Ecclesia Dei, which will make it more difficult for the English, Welsh and above all Scottish bishops to stall the implementation of Summorum Pontificum: 1. A priest does NOT have to be approached by a “stable group” of the faithful in order to schedule a PUBLIC celebration of the Extraordinary Form – he may choose to do so, for example, in order to introduce his parishioners to this ancient form...
