The local hometown team the Jaguars pulled off an upset today in the closing seconds versus the Baltimore Ravens, the game was delayed about 30 minutes due to heavy rain and lightening. When the broadcast started, the Jacksonville Mascot Jaxson DeVille was wearing the normal cat head, bright yellow or gold body suit and a red/white/blue speedo. some of the comments are funny and upheld the "Florida Man" concept perfectly. The TV commentators were debating if they could even show him on air.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem Psalm 52Psalm 52[a] For the director of music. A maskil[b] of David. When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: “David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.” 1 Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? 2 You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor. 3 You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth.[c] 4 You love every harmful word, you deceitful...

Hot ash, gas and lava spewed into the atmosphere by volcanoes can block out the sun, down planes and bury entire towns. As if that weren’t ferocious enough, the most violent volcanic eruptions also generate lightning. Volcanic eruptions, like this one at Sakurajima volcano in Japan, produce beautiful displays of lightning. Two new studies have shed some light on the processes that lead to this phenomenon. This frightening picture of two brothers with their hair on end was snapped just minutes before they were struck by lightning at Moro Rock, California, leaving the younger boy with third-degree burns and another man dead.  Electrical charges in the atmosphere just before a strike can lift hair into the air, providing nature's last warning of a bolt from the blue. These boys, 18 and 12, didn't know that, and the image has spread rapidly across the web this month.  The story behind the classic 1975 picture has come to light on the blog of Michael McQuilken, the teenager on the...

Lightning has broken a finger off the right hand of Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. Father Omar, rector of the shrine that holds the statue, told the Globo radio station that lightning frequently strikes the nearly 100-foot tall statue, a symbol of Rio that overlooks the Brazilian city from the peak of the Corcovado mountain. Its right hand had been damaged sometime ago, but the finger finally broke off in a storm late Thursday.

Three generations of Lightnings compared Today's christening of the Lockheed Martin F-35 as the Lightning II marks a perfect opportunity to compare three generations of fighters bearing that illustrious name - the first two with distinguished in-service records behind them. The table below clearly shows the advances that have taken place in technology and capability since World War II, but also illustrates how differing threats breed their own solutions. In particular, the UK's Lightning - designed as the purest of pure air defence fighters to tackle the Soviet threat during the Cold War - stands out for its afterburner-assisted maximum...

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Lightning struck a group of Boy Scouts taking shelter from a storm, killing the troop leader and leaving a 13-year-old boy brain-dead in the latest tragedy to befall the organization this week, authorities and the teen's grandfather said. Six others were injured when the lightning bolt made a direct strike on a tarp the Scouts had set up in a meadow in Sequoia National Park on Thursday. Ryan Collins, 13, was being kept on a ventilator so that his organs could be donated, the boy's grandfather said Friday. Collins was listed in critical condition at the...

Aug 14, 2003Canadian Officials Provide Conflicting Accounts, Blaming Outage on Lightning or FireBy Tom CohenAssociated Press Writer TORONTO (AP) - Canadian officials insisted a massive blackout Thursday across the Northeast and parts of Canada originated in the United States, though U.S. power workers denied that and American officials blamed Canada. In the hours of confusion after the outage - the biggest in U.S. history - Canada's government offered conflicting explanations for the blackout, blaming it first on lightning in Niagara, then a fire at a Niagara plant, and next a fire at a Pennsylvania nuclear power plant. Canada's defense minister...

  • Lightning Can Strike Inside Airplanes: Report

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In most cases, airplanes can sail through lightning storms with little consequence. But according to a recent report, it is possible--albeit highly unlikely--that a person could be struck by lightning while inside an airplane. The report describes the first known case of a flight attendant who suffered long-term effects after he was struck by lightning while seated in the rear section of the plane. There was no damage to the plane or to other passengers. "Lightning strikes to commercial airplanes in flight are relatively common, yet passengers and crew are seldom injured," write Dr. Michael...
