THE grieving wife of a man attacked and killed by five lions at a game reserve has asked rangers to spare the lives of the animals. He was staying at the Chitake Springs camp with his wife, brother-in-law and a friend when he was killed. Caroline Washaya-Moyo, the park’s spokesperson, said the “open” shower was 38 metres from where the group had set up their tents. His...

A South African woman who worked at Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage in Zimbabwe was killed when she was attacked by an adult lion... Robyn Lotz, 26, from Pretoria, whose life's mission was caring for and rehabilitating neglected and injured wild animals, was attacked after a worker presumably didn't close the gate to the lion's cage properly. Clinton Lubbe, 37, Lotz's brother-in-law, said on Wednesday the workers had apparently been cleaning the lion cages. According to a post on the Facebook page of the animal rehabilitation centre, the lion pushed the gate open and crawled through a smaller gate, used to throw...

A Canadian man has been mauled to death by a 295-kilogram tiger after winning a lengthy legal battle for the right to keep exotic pets... Norman Buwalda, 66, was found dead in the tiger's pen on his property in rural Ontario ... "He had gone in to feed the tiger and possibly had been attacked," Mr Carlson said, indicating there were no witnesses. Mr Buwalda had also kept two lions and a cougar, police said. In 2004, a tiger attack on a 10-year-old boy visiting the property sparked a ban on keeping wild animals as pets.

Eight British tourists are suing a South African safari park after they became trapped by a pride of wild lions when their tour vehicle overturned. The group are claiming hundreds of thousands of pounds for injuries and post-traumatic stress allegedly suffered when they were exposed to the “threatening conduct of the lions” at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve northeast of Cape Town. One of the animals also stole a boot from the tourists, they say. Papers lodged at Cape Town High Court claim that the injuries were due to the irresponsible actions of Natasha Van der Merwe, a park employee. According to...

The four passengers in the jeep must feel a whisker away from death as a lion jumps up on to their bonnet for lunch. But that's all part of the attraction. The jeep is a new zoo exhibit which allows visitors to get incredibly close to the lions. The back part of the vehicle, up to where the windscreen should be, is actually on the outside of the reinforced glass cage. The bonnet is on the inside, and covered with meat to entice the big cats closer. It makes for an exhilarating experience, according to Robyn and Davin Price, both...

The nightly attacks by two man-eating lions terrified railway workers and brought construction to a halt in one of east Africa's most notorious onslaughts more than a hundred years ago. But the death toll, scientists now say, wasn't as high as previously thought. Over nine months the two voracious hunters claimed 35 lives — no small figure, but much less than some accounts of as many as 135 victims.

A mountain lion was killed within the Deadwood city limits Wednesday morning after the big cat, and possibly another, apparently killed a deer in a backyard in town. A South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Department trapper killed one lion Wednesday, but the hunt wasn't over, because police reports early in the day indicated that two lions were in the area. GF&P placed four baited live traps in town in hopes that the other cat could be caught overnight Wednesday. "Our trapper did euthanize one lion, and we're trying to determine what else we have out there," said John Kanta,...

I am from Detroit and I am a Lions fan; erstwhile, anyway. The Lions stink, stank, and have stunk since before I was born. They are lousy, appalling, and nausea-inducing. They are no damn good. Rotten, too. Few can remember when last they won a game. My dad always jokes that in their first game of each new season, a fan in the stadium holds up a sign reading, “Wait ’til next year!”. Because of their rank dismalness, they are, paradoxically, the most-loved football team, and the reason is simple. What opposing coach’s heart is not filled with glee when...

A young mountain lion was trapped and relocated by the Colorado Division of Wildlife after eating a house cat Monday ... north Boulder. “He was just too close,” Churchill said. “We wanted to give him a spanking and move him out of town.” Wildlife officials previously tagged the same cougar in February when the kitten was stuck in a tree, Churchill said. He is part of the five-year Front Range Mountain Lion Study, which aims to track mountain lions between Lyons and Evergreen to better understand cougar movement trends and develop a way to mitigate aggressive behavior near human establishments,...

They moved forward in wedge formations while relying on cover from the terrain. Acting on a call for fire...

A controversial zoo in Argentina allows tourists to have extremely close encounters with some of the most dangerous predators in the world. Here at the Lujan Zoo near Buenos Aires visitors can ride lions, cuddle bears, stroke tigers and feed cheetahs. The animals appear to be very sedate and tame and keepers casually supervise the animals that aren't chained when they are out of their cages. Visitors can even pick up the smaller animals and manhandle them at risk to themselves and the creatures.
