Federal law enforcement authorities are investigating a nascent plot to carry out a series of terrorist bombings at stations in the Washington Metro system, according to intelligence and law enforcement sources. The investigation is focused on a naturalized U.S. citizen, originally from Pakistan, who became the target of an undercover sting operation, the sources said. An administration official said the man drew the attention of law enforcement officials by seeking to obtain unspecified materials. WASHINGTON - When you have to go, you have to go, but exactly where some Metro train operators have been going is disturbing. Train operators have routinely been using "pocket tracks" as restrooms, according to a recent employee safety report by Metro's inspector general. Pocket tracks are sections of track just beyond certain stations where trains can be stopped and parked. Officers will start random bag inspections on the sprawling Washington subway system, the Washington Metro Transit Police said on Thursday, a week after a man was arrested for making bomb threats to the rail system. Metrorail police officers plan to randomly select bags before passengers enter subway stations and they will swab them or have an explosives-sniffing dog check the bags, according to the Metro police.

(CNN) -- A Virginia man has been accused of threatening to place pipe bombs along the Metro transportation system in Washington. According to a federal complaint, Awais Younis, who was arrested December 7, related his plans to someone on the social networking site Facebook. Younis, also identified as Sundullah Ghilzai, told an FBI complainant through Facebook how how to build a pipe bomb "and what type of shrapnel would cause the greatest amount of damage," according to federal authorities.

WASHINGTON -- Metro has circulated an internal memo asking employees to be on the lookout for two men seen videotaping the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station. An internal memo says the individuals were "attempting to videotape inconspicuously, by holding the camera at their side, between their chest and waist." Supporters of a bill that would give federal regulators power to force transit agencies to make safety improvements are rallying around a ruling that the lack of federal oversight contributed to the fatal Metro crash in Washington last year.
