WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon will send almost 4,000 additional American forces to Afghanistan, a Trump administration official said Thursday, hoping to break a stalemate in a war that has now passed to a third U.S. commander in chief. The deployment will be the largest of American manpower under Donald Trump’s young presidency. The decision by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis could be announced as early as next week, the official said. It follows Trump’s move to give Mattis the authority to set troop levels and seeks to address assertions by the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan that he doesn’t have...

The researchers compiling the U.S. Army’s accounts of Iraq and Afghanistan have an unprecedented—and overwhelming—volume of material to work through. When Major Spencer Williams was ordered to “shut down shop and move out” of Afghanistan in 2005, he closed his final message from the field as he always did—quoting a long-dead historian. “Plant yourself not in Europe but in Iraq; it will become evident that half of the roads of the Old World lead to Aleppo, and half to Bagram.” Williams made up one-third of the U.S. Army’s historical field staff in Afghanistan—a team directed to cover the breadth of...

MARAWI, Philippines — American troops are on the ground in the embattled southern Philippine city of Marawi, where the Philippine military is battling Islamic State-linked militants for control, a Philippine military spokesman said on Wednesday. The spokesman, Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla, said that the American forces were not engaged in combat, but his statement was the first official confirmation of the American military presence in Marawi. Philippine and American officials have previously said that United States Special Operations forces were providing military assistance in the battle for the city, but American officials have not said from where, and Philippine officials...

First Female Presidential Helicopter Pilot Fired Over Assault Arrest Jonah Bennett National Security/Politics Reporter 5:15 PM 06/07/2017 The first female presidential helicopter pilot has been fired from command of her current squadron after she declined to report to her chain of command that she was arrested for assault. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Jennifer Grieves, who served as the first female officer to command Marine One in 2009, was removed from command of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, “due to a loss of trust and confidence in her ability to continue to lead,” Task & Purpose reported Wednesday. A CHEERFUL HEART IS GOOD MEDICINE Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. Which came first the chicken or the egg? We may never know the answer to this question, but when it comes to living a fulfilled life, the joy precedes the good feelings. As a matter of fact, the joy is the antidote to the woes of life. Humor is great medicine. Humor helps us to see the big picture. It provides us with a new context by which to view our situation. It...

German Commanders Order Troops to Imagine “Bang” Noise from Gunfire By Katrina on June 10, 2017 at 11:37am The lack of spending on military defense across Europe is taking its toll as troops in Germany have been told to imagine the sound of gunfire during training when munitions are scarce to nonexistent. According to a Wall Street Journal report in early June (subscription required), members of Germany’s Light Infantry Battalion 413 near the Baltic Sea coast reported last year that they didn’t have enough equipment — anti-tank weapons, sniper rifles or vehicles — to simulate battle. When it became clear...

A U.S. Marine who graduated early was barred from participating in his Indiana high school’s commencement ceremony Tuesday because he was wearing his uniform, the Northwest Indiana Times said. Pfc. Jacob Stanley graduated from Crown Point High School in December and then joined the Marines, the paper said. Stanley completed boot camp on Friday, flew home for his graduation and even practiced with his classmates during the day, the paper reported. But Principal Chip Pettit reportedly told Stanley that he wouldn’t be allowed to wear his uniform at the ceremony, the Times said. Stanley reportedly got more than a few...

Black troops are significantly more likely to face military punishment than white service members, according to a new report released on Wednesday. Previously undisclosed data shows vast racial disparities inside the military justice system, where black service members are up to 2.6 times more likely to face court martial or disciplinary action. Protect Our Defenders, a group that advocates for sexual assault victims in the military, received the demographic data after filing Freedom of Information Act requests to each military service branch last year. “It’s information that’s not new to the military,” Col. Don Christensen, a former chief prosecutor in...

Turkey's parliament is expected to fast-track on Wednesday a draft bill allowing its troops to be deployed to a Turkish military base in Qatar, officials from the ruling AK Party and the nationalist opposition said. The move appears to support the Gulf Arab country as it faces diplomatic and trade isolation from some of the biggest Middle Eastern powers. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain severed relations with Qatar and closed their airspace to commercial flights on Monday, charging it with financing militant groups. Qatar vehemently denies the accusations. It is the worst split between powerful...
