According to a (widely debunked) Harvard University study that was widely touted by The Trace, 40% of firearms transactions in the United States happened without a background check. The real number is actually more like 20%. Still, the state of Washington implemented a new law last year designed to close the so-called gun show loophole which allowed citizens within the same state to transfer a firearm between themselves without going through the NICS system. A recently released New York Times/CBS poll included headline-grabbing findings about America's evolving attitudes on gun control. The poll found that the number of Americans supporting a ban on assault weapons is 19 points lower today than it was after the shooting of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and others in 2011. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) says that although he is a gun owner himself and strongly believes in the Second Amendment, he also believes people on the no-fly list should be barred from purchasing guns. "I’m a gun owner. I strongly believe in the Second Amendment," Thompson said during an emotional press conference on Capitol Hill Thursday held by House and Senate Democrats to commemorate the third anniversary of the Newtown, Conn. shootings.

On December 10, the House GOP shut down Rep. Nancy Pelosi efforts to force a vote to add the no-fly list to background checks. The gun control push was co-sponsored by Rep. Mike Thompson. A majority of Americans oppose an “assault weapons” ban for the first time in 20 years of New York Times’ polling on the topic. According to NYU political scientist Patrick Egan, the opposition to such a ban is up 16 percentage points from the numbers seen in 2011. Perhaps the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of troublesome people would serve as a guide. Who knows?
