Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America deputy director Jennifer Hoppe says news that Forest Hills Elementary School teaches a gun safety course to kindergarteners—then repeats it to those same students again when they are in third grade—is “atrocious” and a “disingenious” way for adults to dodge the responsibility they face for owning guns. Forest Hills Elementary is located in Sidman, Pennsylvania, and each October they teach an optional course titled, “Gun Shop” to kindergarteners and third graders.

In its most recent tax filing, Everytown reported $36 million in spending in 2013, or about 10 times as much as the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, a prominent gun-control group that has little presence in states. The 5 million-member NRA spent $290 million that year, including $27 million on its lobbying arm.

Gallup released a series of poll on the Second Amendment and found some interesting things. First, as Cortney wrote earlier today, a candidate’s stance on gun rights is an important issue to almost one-in-four voters. Yet, 55 percent are in favor of stricter gun laws, which are primarily being driven by more Democrats and Independents leaning towards curtailing Second Amendment rights. At the same time, the polling company noted that this issue fluctuates between support for more and less gun control:

A wrongful death lawsuit filed against gun maker Remington by families of some Newtown school massacre victims has been sent from federal court back to state court, where it may have a better chance of succeeding.

Atkins is certainly right that Democratic legislators won't act on gun control until voters are mobilized, but that puts the cart before the horse. You can't mobilize voters on an issue they don't really care much about in the first place. In this case, I think the folks who prioritize issue-area visibility and engagement probably have the better of the argument. Until voters who favor gun control feel as strongly as those who oppose it, all the field work in the world won't do any good.

On September 21 Americans for Responsible Solutions–the gun control group founded by Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly–tweeted numbers from the Center for American Progress Action Fund (CAP) claiming armed citizens in America have killed more people since 1989 than all wars since 1776 combined. The tweet contains a meme which says, “The number of deaths from gun violence just since Reagan’s presidency is higher than the number of soldiers killed in combat in all of U.S. history.”

Earlier this week the Associated Press published a story about Oregon's new gun control laws and the anti-gun advocates behind them. In the piece John Feinblatt, the president of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun Everytown, was quoted saying gun control is a winning issue and that his organization has been successful at bringing home victories on gun control platforms. I am sorry. I hate to sound brutal but Mrs. Richardson’s op-ed looks like pimping the memory of her daughter for a political non-solution to the violence visited upon her by others. I hope that the killers of her daughter are captured and put to trial. And I also hope to find out that she aligned herself with Moms Demand because she was misguided in her pain by unscrupulous vultures trying to cash on another corpse.

Liberal politicians clearly aren’t getting the message, but according to a new CNN/ORC poll the American public is. The fact is that we’ve already made it increasingly complicated, expensive and difficult for law abiding citizens to purchase a gun. Additional efforts to further restrict gun ownership aren’t going to discourage criminals, but they will affect those who choose to obey the law. Breaking from its practice of laying low following shootings, the National Rifle Association Thursday aggressively pushed back against anti-gun groups backed by billionaire Michael Bloomberg and their "#WhateverItTakes" campaign to promote gun control. The NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, headed by Executive Director Chris Cox, Twitter bombed Bloomberg's Twitter hashtag and associated Capitol Hill rally featuring the father of a Virginia TV reporter shot dead on live TV.

The TV anchor boyfriend of the late broadcast journalist Alison Parker, who was slain Aug. 26 on live TV alongside her cameraman, has vowed to honor her memory by covering issues of gun violence and mental illness. The American public as a whole are much more likely to favor stricter gun laws than gun owners

I have been seeing this ad from Bloomberg's Everytown for sometime, so I was pretty stunned when I noticed that as of this afternoon it still only has 292 likes.
