More than 1,000 federal poll watches will be sent to monitor elections in 25 states to assure compliance with voting laws and prevent discrimination or disenfranchisement, the Justice Department (search) announced Thursday. The 1,090 federal observers and monitors will be on duty in at least 86 locations for Tuesday's election. The number is more than triple the 317 dispatched for the 2000 presidential election, which ended after a 36-day court battle over Florida's votes. Personnel from the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division (search) will be on hand in eight Florida counties, including Broward, Palm Beach and Dade counties where much...

The U.S. State Department cracked open the door and now the invasion has begun. Foreign election monitors determined to oversee the U.S. election this November seem to be coming out of the woodwork. Even Jimmy Carter has gotten into the act. The bottom line is that the November election is being set up to humiliate the United States and place in doubt the legitimacy of our government. Those calling for the election monitors, like Democrat California Representative Barbara Lee, argue that the move is necessary in order to "make certain that every person's voice is heard, every person's vote is...

The State Department's invitation for an Austrian human rights group to monitor this year's U.S. presidential election is a "frightening" development and "an absolute threat" to America's independence and sovereignty, according to the head of a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C. Tom DeWeese, president of the American Policy Center, said he's especially angry that the Bush administration would reach out to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which is based in Vienna, Austria. "Bush continues to give conservatives the rhetoric of sovereignty, independence and strength of the United States, and he continues to give the [opposite]...

<p>OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- A recent Sunday found Tina Kolm changing her morning routine. Instead of attending a Unitarian Universalist service, she was at the Lenexa Christian Center, paying close attention to a conservative minister's sermon about the importance of amending the U.S. Constitution to ban same-sex "marriage."</p>

CAPE CORAL -- Gregg Klowden and Zach Reffner wage war against lizards. BIG ones. In the battle to rid Southwest Florida of the 7-foot invader known as the Nile monitor, speed is essential. "The lizards can climb a tree like a shot out of hell, swim like a fish and outrun a man," said Klowden, a University of Florida-trained biologist. "They do everything but fly." These über lizards, first spotted in Cape Coral in 1990, have taken to the Florida sun so well that they're thriving. Because the rapacious reptiles are such skilled hunters, biologists worry they will devastate endangered...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 21 — An antiaircraft missile, ready for use, sits atop a federal office building near the White House. Devices that test the air for chemical and biological substances are positioned throughout the city. Subway stations are now equipped with "bomb containment" trash bins. A major highway that runs by the Pentagon is being rerouted several hundred yards away. A security wall is going up around the Washington Monument. Day by day, the nation's capital is becoming a fortress, turning a city known for graceful beauty into a virtual armed camp. In response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist...

By Kevin Carmody AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Wednesday, November 12, 2003 Two ozone monitors set up in Central Texas this year have provided added evidence that ozone pollution is a regional problem not limited to Austin's urban core. The monitors, in Dripping Springs and Pflugerville, recorded ozone levels exceeding the eight-hour federal health standard of 85 parts per billion during the ozone season that ended Oct. 31. It confirmed the suspicions of state and local officials that Austin's two long-operated monitors were sometimes missing elevated ozone readings in suburban and rural areas outside the city. That sometimes includes relatively high levels of...

I JUST RECEIVED THIS EMAIL FROM AN ISRAELI FRIEND.CNN is at it again. CNN will continue to do this until they get the answer they want. Don't let that happen. CNN is currently taking another poll regarding whether or not International monitors should be sent into Israel. Please respond and vote NO. Go to the URL below, then look for the poll on the lower right hand of their site. It is listed under POLL and not very big. As you probably know, international monitors will favor the Palestinians, and the Israeli Government doesn't believe there would be impartiality in...

The joke, during the endless presidential election recounts in Florida two years ago, was that Russia and Albania would send poll monitors to help the United States with its unexpected bump on the road to democracy. Now, the joke has become reality. A high-level delegation of European and North American election observers – including members from Russia and Albania – arrived yesterday for a week-long mission to watch Florida's mid-term elections, which take place on Tuesday. Their task: to see if the world's most powerful democracy has learned anything from the disastrous 36-day showdown between George Bush and Al...
