State senators on Tuesday removed exceptions for rape and incest from a bill that bans abortions roughly six weeks after conception, potentially setting up a conflict with the House, which approved the exceptions earlier this year after contentious debate. Senators in committee voted 4-3 to strike the exceptions, as proposed by Sen. Richard Cash, R-Powdersville, the chamber’s most ardent abortion foe. San Francisco expanded its city-funded travel and contracting bans to 22 states with pro-life laws. The 22 states include Texas, Massachusetts, and Florida. The move marks the expansion of an ordinance enacted in August that prohibited city-funded travel "to states that have enacted laws that prohibit abortion prior to the viability of the fetus" and contracting with companies headquartered in those states. NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The state of Mississippi says a federal court erred in not letting it present evidence about whether a fetus experiences pain. Attorney Paul Barnes addressed the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday about a Mississippi law that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The state's only abortion clinic sued and U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves blocked the law from taking effect last year, saying it "unequivocally" violates women's constitutional rights because it bans abortion weeks before viability.

California announced last week that it has added Iowa to the list of states on its ever-expanding “travel ban” list because of that state’s new prohibition against funding gender-transition surgeries under Medicaid. The announcement by state Attorney General Xavier Becerra means that as of Oct. 4, California will no longer offer taxpayer-funded trips to Iowa for any public employee or student at a state-run university. A Mississippi man is suing HuffPost on defamation allegations because of an article the news website published last year accusing the man of helping to supply drugs to fellow students at Georgetown Preparatory School while U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was a student there.
