The superstar said Sunday that she will not allow her album '1989' on Apple's new streaming service She explained on Tumblr that this was because the tech giant will not pay for songs streamed during free trial period These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much.' Swift's '1989' was by far the top-selling US album last year and remains high on charts - insisted that she was speaking for all artists and not just herself. Swift found the...

"There definitely seems to be a coalescing of opinions to opt out," one indie label executive tells Rolling Stone Days after Apple executives announced their splashy new music-streaming service last week before a roaring crowd of developers in San Francisco, they presented 250-page licensing contracts to skeptical independent record labels. Indie sources say the tech giant does not intend to pay them royalties for Apple Music's free, heavily marketed, three-month trial period — and many are refusing to sign. "I hesitate to say 'everyone,' but a lot of independent labels are of the same mind — that it's kind of...

As we learned from Mad Men, the advertising industry is ever intent on harnessing trends that are bubbling up organically. Countercultural ideals (say, hippie-era peace and love) are wedded to a mainstream product (say, Coke) and blasted to the mainstream before anyone knows what’s hit them. Which is why hip-hop and advertising go together so well. Firmly rooted in youth culture, hip-hop is edgy but accessible, a combination that companies adore. It can be exciting to see your favorite rapper validated in big-name plugs, whether it’s Jay Z for Hewlett Packard or Eminem for Chrysler. But for every carefully considered,...

Just after sunset on a recent Friday night, what looked like a silent flash mob or a mass game of charades was taking place in a cordoned-off cobblestone square in the South Street Seaport: some 300 people dancing wildly, sans music. Or so it seemed. There were actually three D.J.s dueling for the crowd’s attention, but their tunes could be heard only through wireless headphones, which glowed red, blue or green depending on which channel the reveler chose... ...“I used to go to clubs, but the music is too loud,” said Andre Coppedge, 38... “Here you party the whole time,...

Steven Spielberg's breakout film brought on an era of big spectacle Forty years ago Saturday saw the release of Jaws, an adaptation of a beach-read made by a promising but relatively untested young director, Steven Spielberg. Forty years later, Jaws‘ impact can be felt across moviegoing. The shark tale is perhaps most notable for its box-office success; Jaws became the top-grossing film of all time after its release (and did so more quickly than had its predecessors, with a marketing plan based on blanket advertising rather than a slow rollout). Jaws, with its technical mastery and ability to manipulate the...

Surf City was a mythical place, a paradise for the era’s restless teens in the summer of 1963, when the song became the first surfing tune to reach No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Fame came quickly for the Los Angeles-born duo of Jan Berry and Dean Torrence, who became stars in their early 20s. They would build on their success with hits such as “Dead Man’s Curve,” “Ride the Wild Surf” and “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena,” joining with their younger friends, the Beach Boys, in writing the anthems of the California coastal lifestyle. Skip forward more than...

High-profile murderers often attract a fringe element that is, in the face of all evidence, convinced of the accused's innocence. Jodi Arias is no exception. Except, one of her fans is a rapper. Thirty-four-year-old Kareem Williams, a.k.a. Lefty, is a fanatical supporter of Jodi Arias, who was convicted of the murder of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, in 2013 and sentenced to life in prison earlier this year. Williams has recorded a song expressing sympathy for the woman, who a jury found to have slit the throat of victim Travis Alexander and stabbed almost 30 times. Like many other supporters, he...

IN 1964, at the height of the ska craze, Edward Seaga, Jamaica's minister of social welfare and economic development, invited Byron Lee and the Dragonaires (BL&D) to his West Kingston constituency to revel in a sound that was rocking Kingston's clubs. "Byron, myself and Ken Lazarus went down there and he (Seaga) said 'listen to this'. We heard these guys making amazing music," recalled BL&D lead singer Keith Lyn. That "amazing music" was ska. The West Kingston trip inspired Lazarus and Lyn to write Jamaican Ska, which remains one of the band's biggest hits. It is one of 20 songs...

Steve Harwell, the singer of Smash Mouth, completely lost his composure onstage yesterday at Taste of Fort Collins, a three-day music and food festival which is, according to its website, "A family-friendly celebration perfect for Northern Coloradoans' active lifestyle." Apparently, part of that active lifestyle includes throwing bread at an increasingly irate Harwell. According to The Coloradoan, who broke the story, the bread was being given away for free by some of the festival's food vendors. In the video, Harwell openly challenges the people throwing bread to a fist fight in a profanity-laced tirade, then jumps off stage in an...

Graduating high school is a big deal, so you might as well make a big deal out of it. The seniors at Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, N.H., did just this, with some help from Taylor Swift. No, Swift didn't show up. But her hit "Shake It Off" sure did, as the graduating class performed a flash mob-style dance to the mega-hit that had everyone out of their seats grooving. At the class valedictorian's closing words of his speech, "All you have to do is shake it off," the fun got going — first with hand moves and then full...

MC Hammer is a diehard part of the Dub Nation. The "2 Legit" rapper and Oakland native was spotted courtside as the Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night. Hammer has attended other NBA Finals games, too: He was photographed watching Game 1 on June 4. Bay Area rap stars have been vocal in their support for the Warriors' ascension this season.
