LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has extended Michigan’s stay-at-home order until June 12 and the state of emergency until June 19. The stay-at-home order continues the closure of public places such as theaters, gyms and casinos to limit the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Both executive orders were previously set to expire after May 28.

The Illinois Senate voted 37-19 to pass a voting expansion plan for the November 3 election. The bill heading to Gov. JB Pritzker's desk for approval will greatly expand Illinois' vote-by-mail system following the COVID-19 pandemic. Senate Bill 1863 will give voters the opportunity to cast their ballots without going out in public, as there could potentially be a second round of COVID-19 spread this fall. "The right to vote is the foundational pillar of our democracy -- and, now, as our elected leaders are making some of the most consequential decisions of our lifetimes, it's more important than ever...

In addition to addressing the general looming mental health crisis, we must be specifically prepared for the mental health problems we will see in frontline health care workers. I am a psychiatrist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. I have many great colleagues on the medical side of things who are performing heroically during this pandemic, many of whom I met as a medical intern 15 years ago. The ties we developed during that grueling year are lifelong. I check in with them regularly to see how they are managing during this difficult time and lend an ear when I...

After Donald Trump characterized houses of worship as “essential services” and called upon governors to open them “right now,” Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany faced questions from reporters of what the president’s authority was to force state officials to do so. But she also drew pushback when she claimed that reporters in the White House briefing room wanted to see churches remain closed.

In a scathing nine-page decision, Lake County Common Pleas Judge Eugene A. Lucci excoriated Acton and her health department for exceeding their authority, saying the director “has no statutory authority to close all businesses, including the plaintiffs’ gyms.” Acton, the judge said, “has acted in an impermissibly arbitrary, and oppressive manner and without any procedural safeguards.” Judge Lucci went on to say that fundamental liberties—the right to own and use property and earn a living—are at stake in this case. Acton has “criminalized lawful businesses, imposing strict liability for violations, including severe criminal, civil, and equitable penalties,” the judge opined,...

Churchgoers across the country are reasserting their fundamental rights of conscience—rights that too many political leaders have forgotten or denied. On Friday, President Trump said churches and houses of worship are “essential†and called on governors nationwide to allow them to open this weekend. If they don’t, Trump said he would “override†governors, citing forthcoming guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In remarks Thursday, the president criticized some governors who have “deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics as essential” but not churches. “It’s not right. So I’m correcting this injustice and calling houses of worship essential.â€Trump is right,...

The coronavirus hit Chile at a particularly delicate time. Back in October, the Chilean military deployed tanks and troops onto the streets of Santiago – the Chilean capital – and President Sebastian Piñera declaring a state of emergency to quell a violent uprising triggered by – of all things – a hike in metro fares (can you imagine that happening in NYC?). Now, some of the nation’s poorest are rising up against the government again in a violent protest movement over the lack of government assistance. Specifically, food shortages have left thousands of Chileans with nothing to eat, and the...

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday that the state will continue to include only confirmed coronavirus fatalities and not “probable” ones in its contagion death toll — unlike New York City — because “they’re two different things.” Cuomo — commenting on the topic of confirmed versus probable COVID-19 deaths at a press briefing in Murray Hill in Manhattan — said, “Now some places just put them together, they then get criticized — you can’t put them together. They’re two different categories. “They’re two different answers, and they’re two different questions,” Cuomo told reporters, adding, “Probable is different from confirmed. Probable is...

President Donald Trump warned governors Friday that if they don't reopen the nation's houses of worship "right now," he will "override" them. Trump demanded the reopening in brief remarks announcing that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at his direction, will issue new guidelines to smooth the process. "Today I am identifying houses of worship, churches, synagogues, and mosques, as essential places that provide essential services, Trump said at his appearance, during which he took no questions. "Some governors have deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics as essential, but have left out churches and other houses of worship. It's...

Joe Biden committed yet another bizarre outburst of virulent racism on Friday morning when he told black America that if they don’t vote for him in November “then you ain’t black.” As is usually the case, the 77-year-old looked confused and tired during his virtual interview with Charlamagne tha God, co-host of the Breakfast Club, a popular syndicated radio show. The entire interview was a disaster. Biden slurred his words, lost his train of thought, and looked frail and more than a little out of it. So it would have been an embarrassment even without the racist outburst.

Former ESPN sports commentator and current Atlantic writer Jemele Hill, jumped to Twitter Friday to defend Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden’s contention that if you’re confused about who to vote for, “you ain’t black.” Hill was incensed over the shock many whites experienced when they heard Biden say that black people are not black unless they intend to vote for him in November. The former vice president made the comments on Friday on the Breakfast Club radio broadcast co-hosted by rapper Charlamagne tha God. “If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t...
